I watch him sleeping on the floor on the other side of the room. I should wake him, he's been asleep for two hours; he won't be able to sleep properly tonight. Yet, I do not move, I dare not make a sound. I listen to his quiet snoring. The dark blue tint the sky has bestowed upon the room is strangely discomfiting. The quiet hush of rain makes the quiet of the room more intense, the darkness seems to make him feel miles away from me. But his breathing, his sleeping, contrasts everything. The rain has just stopped, the sun has begun to pierce the clouds. The late afternoon sun paints the clouded city in a warm orange light highlighting faces of buildings and casting stark shadows on others. Cars drive, the city moves, people come and go. Some people go to a specific part of the city. In the shadow of a tall building is an old-fashioned diner. This diner seems like the city was built around it and so it does not quite stand out; but it would seem quite at home in the middle of nowhere on a long stretch of country road where someone would have to drive miles to get to it. The house is quiet and dark. The bathroom is dark and so my eyes open wide. I smell the stale, unmoving air. I try not to move too much so I don’t splash. I like thinking about Todd. It is dark, but the yellow-orange glow of sodium street lights illuminates the section of street in front of a house, most of the front yard and parts of the front of the house. The front of the house has a covered porch. The porch has many of the usual things a porch might have. A pair of bicycles, well used and going to be used. The desert night seems strangely warm, even to Solomon. The night is silent save for the occasional pop of firewood. He is restless and so sits up facing the fire. He looks to his companion, Kira, sleeping peacefully. He gazes at the fire and jumps. Solomon's stomach nearly drops when he sees the stranger sitting casually across from him at the fire.
