Top 20 Favorite Video Games Challenge #3: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

I've always considered myself to be a big fan of Zelda, even if I'm not so keen on every entry in the series. In fact, I have noticed myself to have felt some "franchise-fatigue" in how the games have started to become a bit formulaic and they don't offer that many new or interesting experiences to me anymore (I'm looking at you Skyward Sword).

Yet Majora's Mask is an entry in the series that has always compelled me, maybe because of the fact that it IS quite different from the other main games in the series. It's dark, moody and mysterious atmosphere is something that very few games have managed to get right. It feels so familiar yet unfamiliar, creating that uncanny and almost nightmarish feel to the entire game. I love the three-day-mechanic that creates challenge to the game and helps to reinforce that feeling of impending doom and helplessness. The side-quest-heavy gameplay also makes the player care about every NPC, motivating further to stop the moon from destroying Termina.

One of the best moments in the game for me was the last battle where you fought Majora's Mask as Fierce Deity Link. The bizarre and surreal imaginery of it all was something truly unforgettable. I actually felt very sad when it was all over and how Link had to leave Termina and all the people he came across behind. To be honest, I don't replay Zelda games very often, but Majora's Mask is one game that I can always start over and love every bit of it again. It feels like returning back home, in a way.

That is why this game takes the number 3 spot on my list. It is truly an unmatched masterpiece, and probably the most universally acclaimed game of my list. But we're not done yet, as there remains two games on the list, and two paintings to be done...

(about the painting... I took a little different approach with the Fierce Deity Link and Majora's Wrath with the painting. I was inspired a lot by Frank Frazetta's fantasy art with this one... Also, my new airbrush is awesome :D)

Media: acrylic paint on A3 Bristol paper.

This is terrific man, and there really wasn't any other scene you could have painted to represent this game :D

I like how cocky Fierce Deity Link looks in this picture, he knows that Majora's no match for him, it's just a matter of time before its all over.

Y'know now that I give it a bit of thought I think that the fact this fight is so easy makes it all the more climactic.  After playing the game and getting all these masks, you get to know the people of Termina and to sympathise with them, its a living world in Majora;s mask and the NPCs all feel like real people.  Then you get to face Majora for all of them and let loose all their rage on it for trying to destroy them.

Thanks dude :D I had to think for a while what kind of composition I wanted for this... One plan was to have Link holding the decapitated Majora's Wrath's head ala Mortal Kombat, but I wanted to paint a scene with things actually happening in it, so I went with this.

Yeah indeed, I always thought that there were two kinds of final battles for Majora's Mask... One where you don't get the Fierce Deity Mask and end up with a pretty usual Final boss for a Zelda game, and the second where you get to wield the combined power of all the people you helped on your journey and annihilate Majora with no effort. It does make it more climactic and suits the mood of the story, while still allowing people to take the more challenging fight as the normal Link. Man this game does so many things so damn well :D.

Heh glad you went with this, that would have been cool, but wouldn't really have fit in with the game xD

Yeah I just kinda picture Link standing outside the clock tower as the doors open up, looking up at the moon and remembering all the people he's met throughout his journey and swearing that he's not going to let anything happen to them.  It's a much more personal experience than the other Zelda games and just devastating Majora with all that pent up anger and fear just feels like the proper way to go about it. And like you said if players want a bigger challenge just don't use the mask, Majora's a pretty good final boss if you want to fight him fair xD

XD Nah, maybe not. One of the reasons for doing this whole challenge was also to try different and challenging things, and a head-rip picture like that might have been too easy. There are things like background, view-angle and positions to consider in this composition, so there was much more to do in that regard too.

Yeah me too :D It's an epic, personal moment that's not shoved in by the game but created by the player which makes it all that much stronger and more impressive. By the way, I think my favorite music track in the whole game is the Stone Tower Temple theme. It represents the whole atmosphere of the game pretty perfectly, and the fact that there exists the inverted version of the song in the game supports its bizarre and surreal nature.
