Top 20 Favorite Video Games Challenge #3: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
I've always considered myself to be a big fan of Zelda, even if I'm not so keen on every entry in the series. In fact, I have noticed myself to have felt some "franchise-fatigue" in how the games have started to become a bit formulaic and they don't offer that many new or interesting experiences to me anymore (I'm looking at you Skyward Sword).
Yet Majora's Mask is an entry in the series that has always compelled me, maybe because of the fact that it IS quite different from the other main games in the series. It's dark, moody and mysterious atmosphere is something that very few games have managed to get right. It feels so familiar yet unfamiliar, creating that uncanny and almost nightmarish feel to the entire game. I love the three-day-mechanic that creates challenge to the game and helps to reinforce that feeling of impending doom and helplessness. The side-quest-heavy gameplay also makes the player care about every NPC, motivating further to stop the moon from destroying Termina.
One of the best moments in the game for me was the last battle where you fought Majora's Mask as Fierce Deity Link. The bizarre and surreal imaginery of it all was something truly unforgettable. I actually felt very sad when it was all over and how Link had to leave Termina and all the people he came across behind. To be honest, I don't replay Zelda games very often, but Majora's Mask is one game that I can always start over and love every bit of it again. It feels like returning back home, in a way.
That is why this game takes the number 3 spot on my list. It is truly an unmatched masterpiece, and probably the most universally acclaimed game of my list. But we're not done yet, as there remains two games on the list, and two paintings to be done...
(about the painting... I took a little different approach with the Fierce Deity Link and Majora's Wrath with the painting. I was inspired a lot by Frank Frazetta's fantasy art with this one... Also, my new airbrush is awesome
