I’m beginning to doubt this path,
In the beginning it was bright, colorful, exciting.
I had made plans for a walk, set my route, checked my maps,
And set off on an adventure that was sure to be wonderful.
About a mile down the road I looked up at the sky, it was bright blue.
Another mile or two and the pavement tailed off, giving way to a crude dirt trail.
How delightful, I thought aloud, this is sure to be a marvelous trip,
But not long after the rain began to fall.
The once solid, compact, peaceful dirt trail,
transformed below my feet into a soggy, sloshing disaster.
I lost one of my shoes to the mud, the other soon followed.
Tonight is the night, the night we write
It's been a while since our words took flight
Are you ready to go, up, up and Away,
Somewhere between night and day.
Down in the valley I'll hum a tune
And pray that summer will be here soon
Cigarette smoke hangs in the air
Leaving its scent on your long dark hair
Together we sit as the years roll by
You can lose yourself staring at the sky
In the backcountry of their minds we'll roam
If you lose your way I'll carry you home.
Look up at the sky,
And what do you see?
Blue, or black, or purple or grey,
As far as your eye can take you.
But that is only so far!
We know existence extends,
Far beyond our senses’ reach.
Though we rarely try following
this logical progression,
To its unattainable zenith.
What lies beyond space?
If we cannot see beyond our sky and stars,
Is it so absurd to consider
Something else?
Would the atom know its size?
Outside its nucleus,
It’s mostly empty space,
Much like our world.
Wouldn't it be funny,
If after all our bloodshed,
Our attempted advancement,
Our cries of significance,
Our universe was just
A building block?
A sidewalk strewn
Along a forest,
June wind and leaves,
Softly chorused.
Along suburban
blocks I crawl,
As beams of sunset
Slowly fall.
Bees float and hum
Among the grass,
And songbirds flutter
As I pass.
Swastikas drawn
Upon street signs,
Covered up
By curling vines.
Golden clouds,
Trail in the sky,
Seeds and pollen,
Loftily fly.
This path I've walked,
One thousand times.
When I depart
My valentine’s.
Kisses still felt
Upon my face,
My heart still warm
from her embrace.
My mind adrift,
floating in space,
Recalling skin,
Underneath lace.
She leaves me with
This lovely zen.
But when I go,
I must amend,
I only wish
To see her
A
The idea of permanence
Only becomes appealing
When you have something
Greater than yourself
To lose.
And once it does,
the fact that nothing lasts
Becomes absolutely petrifying.
We are little more
Than the ingredients
To a cosmic firework,
That could explode
At any time.
But still,
One should not fear
Their own fragility.
For fearing what we cannot change,
Is nothing but an emotional drain.
We must cherish the moments worth cherishing,
Savoring every drop
Of life’s elixir,
Its bitterness,
Sweetness,
Tedium and zeal,
Juxtaposed and vibrant.
In our quests,
We find our own sort of permanence,
among the universe's instability.
