Alright, so I haven't had the good fortune to really upload a lot to Eclipse since its release due to an unfortunate incident involving my work laptop- which had all the adobe software and there was the only computer I used for art, but that doesn't mean I haven't been tinkering a bit with Eclipse. I've managed to get one commission uploaded- and more on are their way, I've posted a journal and status on the importance of "Black Lives Matter", I've tried to keep up with with the oddly laid out inbox, etc etc.... So yeah, I've been playing a bit with Eclipse, and here are my thoughts. I am trying reaaaalllyyy hard to give it a chance. Like, really really hard. I no longer absolutely hate the layout of galleries anymore, for example. I think it's limiting and a bit clunky how they parent-child certain things like gallery folders. I don't like that certain customization aspects were removed. And I don't know if I really need core or not anymore if there's no fun things like custom widgets? But in general I picked up on how to navigate the gallery aspects of Eclipse- even if it's not the most user friendly UI in the world. Where I'm really struggling is the inboxes, menu options, etc. Submit is simple enough, no problem there... I can find my gallery easily enough. But the layout of the inbox is just weird. It seriously took me a little while to figure out the "remove all" function and was just manually click-deleting every favorite; which was taking forever. Eventually I figured it out, that you could "remove all" in the separate sections, but that's just too many buttons to press. And that's not me being lazy, that's common user-interface sense. People generally don't like having to click too many buttons to do what they want to do- if a task becomes a chore then it's likely to build dislike and lack of use. Also, I don't like that favorites are under "activity" now? I dunno, changing things and familiar verbiage that didn't need to be changed. The biggest change to the menu and inbox options that I do genuinely despise is that my "watched artist uploads" is hidden away under the "more" menu rather than being the first thing I saw previously in my inbox. This had lead to me missing a LOT of content I enjoy looking at from the people I watch. Again, too many buttons to have to push. When that stuff was tucked neatly into my inbox I was always on top of the people I watch, enjoying their work. Now it feels like a chore, and I literally had to find it when I realized it wasn't coming into my inbox. I have also noticed, due to this, that the traffic to my page and the amount of comments I get on comic pages decreasing; I'm not sure if this is due to the fact the "watched" list was moved out of the inbox or because a lot of people are leaving DA though. Not that this is a big deal, I just miss some of the interaction. The final thing I'll touch on is the aesthetics... Outside of the various panels being bland looking as hell- such as "posts" or your artist ID- I've gotten used to the look of my gallery. I do actually like the big "cover image" that fades down into the rest of the page; it looks quite good on a lot of galleries. But outside of that one positive I still feel like this new DA is cluttered, laborious to navigate, and lacking in personality. It feels more cooperate than artsty. We'll see though, I'm sure I'll get more and more into it... When do y'all think they'll completely change the name "Deviant Art" to "Eclipse"? ;)
Black Lives Matter
I've definitely gotten used to it, and my recommended section is legit. I'm finding so many new artists I never would have found otherwise. So THAT'S a big positive for me, because frankly, I was tired of seeing the same kind of content on most popular, and the eyebleeding content on newest.
My biggest complaint is how long favorites take, and how is kind of annoying to go through the watch section.
My OTHER big complaint is actually the "like" button. I have always been a commenter, and now instead of receiving replies, I just get likes instead. I feel like it's almost destroyed a lot of engagement that used to be there.
I have high hopes for it though!
I agree with pretty much all you've said. Most of my use of this place was my Watch list so I've had the hardest time with that. Very annoying. I like the recommendations too it's given me more to stare at.
Not sure I totally agree with the like button but I never was a huge commenter anyways lol so I just like things instead of nothing.
I don't mind the layout of the galleries either. I just REALLY hate that I feel I've been limited to how I can organize my favs/and gallery. I'm very.. monotonous and I can't just "quit" but Eclipse's way of organizing is annoying/slow as heck for me. Its why i haven't submitted a picture, I've told them several times I have carpal tunnel syndrome. The way they let me move things would just irriate my hands/or make what use to be quick work done slower now. I have a few more issues but thats the one thing that really hasn't bothered me the most.
What they are? (in regards to favorite) oO Does that mean people who watch me know what I'm faving now. I ... didin't want that. Thought that was the purpose of the option when we'd make a collection. Who knows when they feel they've broken us enough ... or whenever their Alexa rank goes back up?
The thing that truly pisses me off is how mature content is handled now.
It's no longer required to indicate if your work is mature or not. Before, you had to tick either yes or no to be able to upload, and now you can just ignore it?
The other thing is that if you have the mature filter on, it doesn't tell you WHY a deviation is marked as mature. As someone who doesn't want to see any sexual content but doesn't mind seeing some violence, it's like playing squick-roulette. If I don't play, I miss out on a bunch of fun stuff from my favorite content creators. If I do play, I occasionally see things I really don't want to. WHY would they get rid of that? There's just no reason!
I really hope people will start putting why things are marked as mature at the top of their descriptions... but no luck so far. This is why I always advocate for Toyhouse, it's not a general art posting site but god damn their mature filter system is the best I've ever seen, and I wish more websites would follow suit.
(I apologize if I've ranted to you about this before but I'm still pissed off about it lol)
I noticed a big decrease in activity as well. I assumed people were leaving, but it makes sense that they just don't see the uploads anymore, because come to think of it, I don't either. I too feel like we have to go looking for everything. It's horrible user interface design, and it goes against EVERYTHING I'm learning in the university ABOUT THIS STUFF... The big rule, rule number 1 is literally that the customer/user need to push as FEW buttons as POSSIBLE.. We learn that everytime you have to click on another button, we lose a customer. Just like DA is now losing users because people have to click a million times on a million different buttons.
I do like some of the design choices, like you mention the cover. But the notification and watch function has been completely destroyed. People are here to watch other artists, and it's become so difficult to do that.
Yep, I have the same opinion. I'm in school for Graphic Design so this layout hurts my heart. I genuinely haven't found a single thing about this layout that I preferred over the old one. Now, I'm not saying the old one was great by any means, I'm just saying this one is far worse. There are so many things where I just look at it and ask "Who thought that was a good idea and who let that get approved?".
I personally don't even like the profile covers because you have to scroll up to see the full image after clicking on someone's profile, and it's obscured by an annoying gradient that makes it look washed out (on the green layout that I'm using.)
Yes, true. I think the idea behind the cover is a good idea, but the execution could definitely be better. I like the old design because there was a lot less clicking hahah! Both watching and notifications being in the same place was waaaaay better than this. Although the old design did look a little dated, I think the functionality was a lot better.
I’m still having a really hard time naviagting this shitstorm of an app. I follow a lot of artists and TLK comic on here and whenever I see that someone uploaded a comic page 90% of the time I see it then have to go back a couple of pages because I didn’t see the other pages uploaded because of the new watched gallery. I’ve seen people say they like how the first thing they see is recommended artists pieces but I can’t agree. I’d liked discovering new pieces when I clicked on a piece, not when I open the home page, it’s annoying.
Im also having trouble with the notifs and the watched user gallery. Half of the time i can’t even see art that an artist I really like uploads because of all the other 500 million art pieces that get cluttered. My notif page is all clustered and so is my watched user page. I mainly use mobile which is def more shitty than the laptop version. On my laptop I have to manually delete every piece in the watched gallery but 95% it glitches and makes me click on the piece anyways which severely frustrates me. But on my IPad idk how to delete the notifs ;-;
i also really hate how ugly and bland my profile looks now... My galler is all fucked up and my main folders aren’t showing because I put seperate pieces into sub folders to make it neat and now it’s not showing because there’s no “main” submissions. And every time I try to create a new folder it glitches and wont work. It’s so frustrating and I’ve considered deleting my account but choose not to bc of the ppl I watch.
i feel like a boomer trying to use this app. Can you tell me how to “delete all” notifications? Ive looked everywhere for the option but can’t find it :/
I Dont really post on here anymore I'm more of a spectator now. I do have one thing to say though. I'm not finding it to hard to use on mobile from a spectator point of view.
I'm getting used to it steadily too... but I mainly write and for literature it's like... well, its like its using the Patreon style of here is your title and here is a giant text box and yet on Patreon you can scroll up and down and see what your doing, this feels like typing onto a blank web page - plus no more sta.sh writer so when you have to edit, you have to go through tones of code to edit the text - it doesn't even take you to the same page you submitted the literature on!!!
Sorry, ranting on your bit - but aside from that and the fact I still can't seem to go through my watch without being thrown to 'this artists' when I'm trying to remove something and then wondering where the hell I've gone to, I've been finding you can just about cope but without any form of organisation whatsoever... it feels like it downgrading all the points where it was doing better than anywhere else.
Plus you're right, it lacks any kind of character or charm and it feels harder to personalise where once your homepage was easy to do that with.
Would you call me insane if I told you that I'm actually a bit fond of Eclipse? XD I mean, it does look intimidating at first, but once you take the time to get used to it and figure out where everything is at and how it works, then it's not too shabby!
It is from a designer point of view though - the design where you have to click 10 times when you could easily just do it with one click before is literally the opposite of what designers learn in the finest design schools. The non-stop clicking whenever I have to do a simple task is the most annoying part of eclipse. The other things I can live with but not this lol
I'm sorry to hear about your computer! And yeah, Eclipse is clunky as hell. I noticed you can no longer delete notes while on mobile, and I don't like that on .com they hid the notes under the Chat feature
What's pissing me off royally is the bug in my gallery where I can't adjust images and put them in the order I want. Which is imperative for the story I'm writing, because it's being posted out of order. I submitted a ticket so....we'll see. Hugs
Sorry I had to reply, I have this problem too!! I cant delete things from my watch on my laptop. It's annoying I have to pull out my phone to clear it out, which is already frustrating since I have to gently tap hover for the x to even show up
