Making a Monster

Edit: just so you know, those guessing it's Mnyama are correct. As for what he becomes, this does not excuse what he eventually does to Diku and Dwala, but it does give some insight into how he became the monster he is.

"Mother..." A small voice trailed off as a young cub made his way slowly up to the lioness sitting before him.

The lioness did not acknowledge his words, only a slight flick of her ear alerted the cub that she had, in fact, heard him and knew he was there.

"... Why did you let that lion hurt me?" He asked in a small, weak voice, tears starting to roll down his soft cheeks. "Why did you just walk away?"

The lioness looked over her shoulder at the cub, her eyes showing no pity, her maw dead-pan with not the slightest tremble or frown of sympathy. She then looked away, her eyes rolling up to the heavens. 

"You look so much like your father..." She said in a cold, emotionless tone. "Did I ever tell you that?"

"No," whimpered the young cub, his brain, body and soul far too traumatized to give a thought about the way he looked, or the nonexistent father they rarely spoke of. "What does that have to do with what happened to me?"

"Because... You are the daily reminder of what that monster did to me." She said, the slightest hint of anger grumbling over her cold tone. "And now you know how exactly that felt."
