Godzilla - Megalosuchus pacificus

While sightings of these creatures existed as far back as 1944, albeit dismissed as cryptids, they were not formally discovered until 1954. Despite often being described as a dinosaur or crocodile by the general public, it has been determined by experts to be a rauisuchian, closely related to the famous Postosuchus. It's believed it came from a smaller relative of Postosuchus that survived the Triassic extinction due to its lower metabolism requiring less food than its larger relatives. During the Jurassic, it remained a small-prey generalist predator, developing some aquatic adaptations in order to hunt fish as well. Eventually, they ended up on islands, either by island-hopping or natural rafts, and they would remain there through the Cretaceous as well. During the K-T extinction, it's believed they survived due to their low metabolism, smaller size, and dietary variety, allowing them to survive into the Cenozoic. During this time, they grew in size to become apex predators and began to convergently evolve several adaptations similar to the prior dinosaurs. As they were already bipedal, their arms shrank while their legs strengthened to support their greater mass, resulting in an appearance superficially resembling a Tyrannosaurus. Like dinosaurs, they possess air sacs to reduce weight, though they're primarily used to increase their diving ability. Additionally, their osteoderms extended into plate-like structures akin to those of Stegosaurus, sharing a similar function in sexual display and intimidation.

In their modern form, Godzillas are roughly 7 meters (23 ft) tall, 29 meters (95 ft) long, and 22.5 metric tons (25 tons), making it the largest terrestrial carnivore to ever exist. This is due in part to deep sea gigantism, as Godzillas often dive deep underwater to hunt prey like squids and sharks, which also facilitated the evolution of mesothermy akin to dinosaurs. One of the most infamous traits of Godzillas are their "power breath", which is a vapor released from their mouth in order to expel salt. This stream of vapor, which is a translucent clear color but often appears blue due to refracting light, is also used as a display to intimidate rivals. Due to their large size and the heat generated from it, this vapor can reach heats of around 212°C (414°F), resulting in severe burns to anything it hits. Additionally, they possess a symbiotic relationship with a bioluminescent bacteria that lives on their dorsal plates, and they can send electrical signals to the bacteria to cause them to glow a luminous blue color. This bioluminescence is used both to hunt prey in the deep sea and to attract mates, flashing elaborate patterns to one another. Occasionally, after extended time at sea, their dark grey scales can become riddled with algae, turning it a green color.

Generally, Godzillas are found across the Pacific Ocean, being sighted in various places, such as California, the Marshall Islands, Odo Island, Letchi Island, the Bering Sea, Baas Island, Sollgel Island, Guam, Australia, New Guinea, the Marshall Islands, Indonesia, and, most infamously, Japan. Godzillas generally patrol rather large territories for predators of their size, most residing on individual islands with, at most, a handful of other members of their species. This is because they show surprising parental instincts, even more so than modern crocodilians. Rather than hatching many eggs and caring for them for a short period, before letting them go out on their own, they instead lay only a few eggs, which hatch well-developed offspring that are quite capable hunters on their own. Both parents will care for the offspring for several years before letting them leave once they reach sexual maturity. Due to patrolling such large territories, in addition to fights between rivals being fairly common, Godzillas have also caused issues with humans, attacking fishing trawlers for their catches and sometimes coming ashore in populated areas.

Godzillas possess a bite force of roughly 35,00 psi, rivalling the lower estimates of Tyrannosaurus rex. This bite was used to crush prey swiftly, giving little chance at retaliation once bitten. They're also fairly intelligent, with estimates for intelligence ranging from that of a cat to that of a chimpanzee, though the former if much more widely agreed upon. Additionally, their bellows can be used to stun smaller prey, as their well-developed vocal flaps and larynx allow them to roar at up to 195 decibels. Due to the volume of their roars, it can be hear for several miles and can be used for both communication and territorial displays. Interestingly, Godzillas possess the ability to raise and lower their metabolism depending on the circumstances, having metabolic control much greater than any known reptile. During activity, they can raise their metabolism to something akin to a mammal's, greatly raising their body temperature and allowing for increased movement and stamina. Likewise, during periods if inaction, they can lower their metabolism far below what's expected of most animals, allowing them to survive for almost 16 months without food or water and even allowing them to enter a state of hibernation to wait out hard times for several years at a time. It's believed this adaptation, among others, is the primary reason their ancestors were able to survive for so long and endure multiple extinctions.

Very chubby gojis! Lemme guess, it's first recorded sighting was 1954, eh?
