I'm waaayyy behind on my resolution, mostly due to heavy commissions over at cosplayscramble but I discover today that I got a DD on my Fish to Dino Practice animation! :D

Whoo-hoo! Kinda makes wish I did a better job, though... :/ There are so many mistakes in it...

So as a bonus for everyone who liked the animation, I'm posting the original storyboards and the original model sheets. (Both of which conveniently also work toward my art quota. :3)

I've neglected this account far too much. While it's true that working on cosplayscramble has taken up all my drawing attention, I'm disappointed at how slow my art is improving and I feel I need to work on some art fundamentals in other media (say, media without an "undo" command).

I bought several sets of Copic markers a few months ago, and am using them in an attempt to increase my drawing accuracy, to practice planning ahead, to help overcome my perfectionism, and other things. Surprisingly, this is working somewhat and since the volume of my art doodles has increased, I've decided to form a new year's resolution:

Every even-numbered day of the year, I will post something to this account.

I'll leave it slightly flexible. If I miss a day on accident, for instance, I'll just post something as soon as I remember or as soon as it's convenient and continue on. (This has already happened, actually.) I'll make no rules about content, media, level of finishing, or anything -- only that I post something.

I hope this resolution will tame my perfectionistic tendencies and help me to get used to uploading things on a regular schedule, both of which are important for maintaining a webcomic, which is one of my long-term goals.

Just saw the map for Artist Alley tables at Fanime... and the only thing I could think was :jawdrop: HOLY COW HOLY COW HOLY COW THERE ARE A TON OF TABLES!! i80.photobucket.com/albums/j17… (I get one of the red ones.) Knowing that Fanime has five times the attendance of Anime Banzai (the largest con I've sold at thus far) is one thing, and seeing just how many artists selling with me is another. ~whahhh~ I'm starting to feel trepidation!

Edit: Thank you everyone who sent in videos! <3 MUCH LOVE <3 Those who earned magnets have been contacted.

As it was limited to 15 minutes, I was only able to use a small portion of each response; many excellent answers were too long or too similar to other answers for me to include.

The video was a huge hit in class. Watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkTr0l…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are an otaku (or plain anime fan), a geek (or a fan of something nerdy), or a regular person who knows an otaku or geek, you can help me!
This is for a school project. I'm trying to ascertain if otaku are another breed of geek, or if they're something else entirely. To help, email me (or link on YouTube) a webcam video of yourself answering some questions about your otaku/geeky interests, otaku/geeky friends, and what you think about otaku/geeks. If you're interested in helping me, note me with your email and I'll send you the questions. Text answers still help me (though not nearly as much) so if you want to help but don't have a webcam, just note me your answers.
Due to some poor planning on my part, I NEED THESE ANSWERS ASAP, or by Saturday, March 12 at the latest.
Win Cosplay Scramble magnets!
The first four who send in video responses will receive their choice of three free magnets, plus the (very rare) opportunity to purchase other magnets without attending a con—at 50% off the prices listed at cosplayscramble! If you have a friend or significant other who wants to answer the questions too, make a video together and you'll both get your choice of three magnets (and it will count for one of the four slots). I'll take care of shipping.
See all my magnets at cosplayscramble.
I made negative money on TomoFest in Boise -- a combination of holiday traffic, poor con attendance, rotten weather, and really, really bad timing to miss school means I probably won't make another attempt. It would seem my Boise excursions will be limited to Oasis (which will be ousted by Fanime, if possible) and Fandemonium. Actually, it would seem that the fact I was just in Boise for Oasis six months previous was detrimental to my AA sales, since everyone who would have bought something has done so already, and I only had eight new characters -- I got a lot of "Oh yeah, I got this last time" and "Yeah, we really enjoy _____ on our fridge." Live and learn, I guess.
Breaking news: SCHOOL IS HARD! I haven't been in college full time for five years, and I forgot how tough it can get. Right now I'm drowning in my own procrastination mess, so I really only have myself to blame. (I should be writing two and a half essays right now. Why am I on dA again?)
Kay bye.
P.S. I used to do all that cool stuff at the bottom of my journals, but it's such a pain to keep up it discouraged me from making new journals. So yeah... it's grounded in favor of my writing journal entries. Sorry everyone I featured there....
Am I ready? ...Hmmm.... no. Well, maybe. Kinda? Barely.
There's a lot left to do (including draw!!) but I think there's just enough time. Sometimes I'm like, cool, Banzai's tomorrow and it's gonna be great! XD But the next minute I'll be like ASDFASDGASDF how can I do everything?! O_O I had an exam this morning and I couldn't sleep very well, so I'm tired to boot. >_< RARGH
I was expecting my productivity to maintain itself from May onwards; from December to May I drew 36 chibis. Since then I've drawn five. And a half. All in the last two weeks. >_> Yeah, I completely forgot about drawing stuff. And then school started and... anyway, so there's only gonna be 42 chars, but the new ones were selected from character suggestions from Anime Oasis, so they'll be popular ones.
If you're local, hope to see you there!
This morning, linemoren and I are going shopping for a few last-minute things and then driving off towards Boise, where Anime Oasis will be for the next four days. My first AA! (And only my second con, but never mind. XD) I'm taking nearly 1,000 individual character magnets of 36 characters (chibis number 2 through 34 plus numbers 35, 36 and 37. (Chibi #35 is replacing chibi #1.) Hopefully some sales will happen, because there was quite the initial investment on this stuff.
I have some worries due to the fact that I don't have a reserved table at AA -- I'm dependent on something they call "first come, first serve" tables, which are up for grabs until someone occupies them, and then as soon as they leave the tables become available again. I plan to get up early and go to the con first thing tomorrow morning, but I'm not sure how it's going to work. (I keep telling myself, "In four days, someone has to leave sometime.")
Yesterday I was nervous, but I'm fine today... We'll see what happens. Wish me luck! ^_^
These last few years have been duds in terms of my productivity, but hopefully that will change this year. I'm readmitted to the University of Utah, and I'm trying to get into the Artist's Alley scene:
Recently I've posted these chibis of random characters, and I think I'm ready to reveal their full purpose: "Cosplay Scramble" magnets!
:iconcosplayscramble:
What is Cosplay Scramble, and why are they magnets? Go to my new alt account to find out more.
On another note, for the first time EVER, and after wanting it for more than ten years, I have bought a Pokemon game the day (after) it came out! For the originals I was four years late, for GS I was two years late, for FRLG I was one year late, for DP I was five months late, and this time I was only one day late! Oh yes!
I never write in this. Ever. I guess I'm just not a blogger. But anyway, seeing as it's been over a year since the last one...
I'm seriously into the preproduction stage of Doctor Foo, a Doctor Who parody that's been on the back burner (on really low heat) for a few years. I have a format and a publisher, too. I just need to write episodes one and two, and then I can start drawing it. (I've already written three and four, and have future volume(s) planned out). So that's where all my attention has been going.
Oh, and if anyone can tell me the price (and availability) of thermometers in the United States 150 years ago, plus or minus 20 years, it would really help me out. You'll find out why I need to know eventually.
It's about time I wrote in this again. ^_^
Since last journal, I bought a new tablet pen and a pen-tablet leash from wacom.com ... the tablet and pen will never be separated again!!! As such, however, the pen in essense no longer wireless. Ah, well.
Also, since my last journal, my old lappy's logic board died. The iBook G4 "New Miyazaki" (age 3-4 years old) was put to rest about five weeks ago, may she rest in piece. Course, then we sold the most salvagable parts on eBay... XD The hard disk, as you may remember, was newer than the rest so was then pulled and applied to SolraBizna's Clamshell iBook G3... (80 GB! a bit of an upgrade ^_^).
Anyway, since my mother and I were going on a "business" trip to visit her best friend / business partner in Colorado, and since I was supposed to train them in PhotoShop and Illustrator, I needed a new machine, so my parents bought me a SEVENTEEN-INCH MACBOOK PRO!!!! Holy freaking heck. The screen is gorgeous!! It came with a freaking 2 GB of RAM!! (My old one came with 128 MB!!) I can't use Classic anymore, which makes me sad, but with PhotoShop CS3 it's hard for me to stay concerned. ^_^
On another note, I've joined forces with my friend Admiral Potato to create a webcomic for his still-in-progres videogame. He writes it and colors it, and I do the lineart. I've started an account -- nucleargirlcomic -- to handle a lot of that art and stuff.
Why do I only write in this when I'm feeling frustrated? Meh.
I've lost the pen to my tablet. T_T I think it fell in the garbage can by accident, because there was a can near where it was lost. I've searched the entire room to no avail... and by the time I thought of the garbage can it had already been garbage day. *cries*
I actually have two tablet pens. If you remember (or care), my original tablet died because the cable wore out. The pen still worked fine, and I used it as a secondary pen for my new tablet. So, when I couldn't find my new pen, I ransacked my room for my old pen. Nope. Nada. So now, I have no pens.
To buy a new one costs $30 on Wacom's website, which is more than what I make in a day, so I wanted to save money (for once) and see if I couldn't find my original pen first... that was weeks ago, and now I have to face facts -- if I'm ever going to use my tablet again, I have to buy another pen.
So this is why all my art has stalled the last few weeks. I simply can't work. There's one comish that I had already done the outlining and flat color for, so I tried to do the cel shading with a mouse, but that ended up looking dumb, and it took much too long.
I'm really miffed about this. There's several people that should have got their art from me a long time ago, and now I can't work on them.
School has started (as of 8-23) and my work has started (from 8-22). As a consequence, I am very busy -- busier than I've been in my entire life, actually. For the first time, I'm working at a real job (like with paperwork, and checks in the mail twice a month, and not at a session-by-session basis like previously) for nineteen and a half hours a week. It's very rigorous, and the building doesn't have air conditioning, so I think I'm already losing weight from the experience... but between that any my 2 classes at the University, I don't have any energy left afterwards, even for drawing. So don't expect too much from me until I at least get into a good routine and catch up with myself. Or maybe get ahead in Japanese enough that I can draw during class. (Bad me.)
Yayyyyyy! I did it!!! I actually made my goal!!!!!! For those of you just now tuning in, my goal was to reach 16 watches (12 at first, but then moved to 16) and 1,000 pageviews by August 2, 2006 -- my 1st year anniversery on dA. Despite a few hitches, like my computer being dead for two weeks and completely neglecting this account (having forgot about it) for two months at the first, I actually did it!!
It seems that [Doctor Who S1 Quickie] was the real winner, though, getting me 100+ page views at the last minute. (And still counting!) Of course, I also shamelessly advertised the image when thanking every single person who faved or commented on it.... Actually got a lot of watches from that image, too, although I already made that part of my goal earlier. Submitting it to DoctorWho-Club was good for exposure, as well.
Anyway, a big thanks to everyone who watches me:
:iconzemapela::iconmikuko::iconkawaru::iconevilsaku::iconwinbo::iconserenemeow::icondionisius::iconlrpanda::iconbunnii-a-la-mode::icondemurewolf::iconsakurabatou::iconthe-ghibli-club::iconjkbunny::iconhayomiyazakiclub::iconmiatzu::iconkarenai::iconcow-demon::iconthelushfairy::iconmooglebob::iconmagical-chipmunk::iconsuperherogirlcat: which makes 21 watchers total! Wow!!
The goalbreakers were karenai, who was my 16th watcher, and..... my little sister, for the 1000th pageview. Now, for the latter, that wasn't nepotism or anything, she just wanted to look at my Chrono Trigger stuff, and my laptop was in the other room, so I pulled up my dA frontpage on her machine, and *POOF!* hit 1000 pageviews just then.
So thank you both very much!! Karenai and.... my sister. Who doesn't have a dA account. But if she did I would link her. Right.
So now, time to set some NEW goals, like 10,000 pageviews and 200 watchers by August 2, 2007!!!1!!!eleven! yeah, right. More like...
MY OFFICIAL GOAL: By August 2, 2007 -->
3,000 hits
(up by 2,000 from previous goal)
40 watchers (up by 24 from previous goal, double current amount)
Hopefully, this goal will turn out to be reasonable and within my capabilities, and won't cause any stress and last-minute mass drawing. Or drawing things meant for quick favs and watchiness. Et cetera.
Within a week of my tablet dying, I bought an almost unused tablet from a classmate of mine for $25!! It was oldish, but still fantastic for drawing and stuff. Yay!!!
Only..... now my computer is fried. And I mean really fried. I have a backup from 3 months ago, and I'm nearly done backing up a few things that have been added/modified since (including a Naruto DJS scanslation project), but it's taking foooorrrreeevvveeeeerrr even in target disk mode. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong, but we're pretty sure that the entire hard disk needs to be replaced. >_< Expensive 'cuz it's for a laptop, and since it's an iBook and not a PowerBook even more so. Hopefully, I can get one larger than my current one within my budget.
Soooo, I haven't been able to draw for a month. Well, more like weeks. It sure feels like a long time anyway. And I rather don't think I will be able to make my goal T_T but since it was sort of a "barring all unforseen incidents" kind of thing, I'm okay with that.
My tablet is dead!!! TT_TT
The cord wore out with heavy use and hard treatment in my backpack, like so many other things.... headphones, power cable... It makes me sad, cuz now I can't use Manga Studio like I've been wanting too.... *wah*
Plus, this means to meet my pageviews goal (1,000 pv by August  2nd) is gonna take a lot of pencil/pen/paper work by hand (which I've been neglecting, sadly, in the shadow of the Wacom tablet) and I don't have a scanner at the moment.... I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I'm way to broke to buy another tablet, hmmm. I should try to find the lightbox at least.....
And my R key is broken off my keyboard. Makes things a little tricky to type.
....... I need a job.
Stuff I'm Into Right Now: DOCTOR WHO
Second Season of the New DW!!!! Yaaaay!!!!
Plus I'm systematically going through every ep of Colin Baker, in order. (Did Sylvester McCoy last month.) Peri is really annoying on the TV show. No wonder my Dad avoids those seasons of DW. On the Big Finish audios, which I had been marathoning previous, Peri is much better. Not so whiny. I got used to her like that. Hmph.
On the audio dramas, I've done all the ones I have, except for the Paul McGann ones. Supposedly, I'm to listen to all of those, now, in order. I got as far as Storm Warning, which I liked, but have been too busy to do any more. I need to stuff my iPod with them and listen while at school, or in the car, or on the bus, or something, cuz with finals and everything I can't just sit on the computer and listen while playing solitare or sudoku or whatever.
A Question for British Peoples:
All right. While on the subject of Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas, I've noticed something about Nicola Bryant's American accent..... In one of the other Big Finishes (for the life of me, I can't remember which one... a later one, one that features Peri....) there's another American character who is played by a British actress. I don't know what it is, but the two characters sounded exactly the same to me. I could honestly not tell them apart (by their voices) while listening to the thing.
I'm curious as to whether this is because the actresses really do sound that much alike (which I'm doubting) or because it's due to the fact that their American accents have the exact same level of accuracy -- that is, they both get the majority of sounds correct, but sometimes a few unstressed vowels are schwa's when they're not supposed to be (everything= evr-uh-thing versus evr-ee-thing); or the word stress patterns are British (la-BOR-a-tory, instead of LAB-ra-tory), even if they use American sounds; or their overall sentence stress patterns are VERY British....
Right, so my point is, to a British person, do these people sound alike? Or do they just sound the same to me because their accents have the exact same "grade" (93/100)? And, for another question, do these characters sound 100% American, or just mostly American? I'm really interested in getting a British perspective on this issue.
And, for any Americans who follow this or care, does Peri (etc.) sound 100% American to you guys? Or do I just notice these eentsy flaws because I'm a linguist and a phoneticist (or just plain nit-picky)?
Please Comment on this journal entry if you have any thoughts on this issue.
Sweeeeeeeet program! Very good tones support and yummy features. (Tones really make a drawing look professional!) It won't replace PhotoShop for me, but both PhotoShop and Manga Studio will do very nicely for manga projects and black and white drawing. (Photoshop still is best for color work! ^_^)
For some reason, I can't seem to be consistant with my drawing; if you were to take each thing I've done, you could argue that it could have been done by someone different each time. I need a style! I need consistancy!! >_<   *GRRRR*   I think this is the only reason I haven't made a webcomic of ANY sort yet....... if I just had consistency, I would even be confident enough to submit something to TokyoPop based on my current level of competence.....
So, I have some goals!!!!! Yay!!!!
First = 1,000 pageviews by August 2, 2006. That would be my 1st anniversery on DA, tho' strictly speaking I was only active for 2/3 of that time. I think that if I'm just a bit more active than I have been, this goal will be happen. So, this is just encouraging me to maintain a reasonable pace in making deviations.
Second = 12 people watching me. More would be brilliant, of course, but I have to be realistic. This number is just half again what I have right now.
Third = At least 5 pages of sequential comics. This will probably be Doctor Foo, for anyone who cares.
And always, always, aiming for consistency!!! Bah.
