"The unicorn's hooves clattered on the smooth rocks as she made her way deeper into the cave toward the pool within the first cavern. She had been shocked, at first, to find a water horse living in such a remote location and curious toward the circumstances under which he came to be imprisoned in a cave pool. She had been coming here for a month now, listening to the trapped horse’s tale. Sometimes she brought seaweed to give him nourishment. Other times she simply would listen to tales of his lost homeland.
Her heart began to pound faster in anxiety as she approached the edge of the deep pool. Glancing into the empty depths she began to worry.
Had the trapped hippocamp survived the night in his prison? Had he somehow managed to escape, and left without saying goodbye?
As she peered into the depths, a brilliant flash of red illuminated by a streak of sunlight in the dark cavernous pool came into view suddenly, causing the chestnut mare to give a sigh of relief.
“You have returned.” A melodious baritone voice rose from the depths.
As the brilliantly colored hippocamp gazed up at her, she felt her heart cry out. She wanted to help him escape. She wanted to follow him wherever he should journey. Yet she knew this was impossible, for his world was one she could never live in. It was a sad truth, one that pained her to think about it. For it was in that moment that she realized she loved him."
