I originally said that I would never do another digital dressup doll unless it was either of a character of my own design or I could figure out something original to do with the format -this dogma went out the window though when I saw some artwork for the upcoming Nintendo DS game 'Trauma Center: Under the Knife'.

The character here is, according to the recent trailer from Atlus, Nurse Angie, though at the time I started making it, I had no idea what her name was. I just loved that odd pose, which would probably send you tripping to the floor if you attempted it in real life. The idea of a nurse with a wireless radio headset is a rather neat idea as well.

Using the original artwork, I redrew it in Flash, which proved to be an interesting challenge, for both the body shape and the shading. In that pose, the character is almost entirely legs, and her uniform actually hides the exact placement of her hips and waist. So, doing the basic body template proved to be more challenging than I anticipated (this is also why I skipped over the easter egg that I included with the other two previous dolls).

Wishing to do something more than just the two skirts, I thought I'd like to see how she'd look in a pair of shorts. This too proved to be a great challenge, and while I'm not 100% happy with the result, I think I've managed it. I also liked the idea of giving her a pair of those sexy, tight fitting boots, but it didn't look right until I gave them some shading. Again, I'm not a 100% on them, but I'm still pretty happy with the result.

The format of this doll is more in keeping with my Another Code doll, and so it might be a techincal step backwards, but the funky body anatomy limited what I could really do with her, and I honestly don't think I could have included a whole lot more clothing options than I did. I also skipped over the eye blink, because her expression is already so cool, and I didn't want to detract from the original design. Despite being sexy, she's a very serious character, and in some of the screen shots I've seen of the game, she's actually screaming at you in a way that would be quite disconcerting to see in a real emergency room situation.

Well done! It is unlike most dress up games where you cannot drag and drop. How do you make the outfits change by clicking on a button? I would like to make a dressing game too but I have no clue how to make it with the clicking. There are only tutorials for drag and drop games.
Akito01 Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2007
Thanks for the kind words.

I think my decision against drag-and-drop was mostly based on the way the screen can get very cluttered and the general lack of a snap-to function (or at least my lack of knowledge to create a snap-to function, since I've seen a few Flash dolls that do use snap-to).

The actual Action Script is something I evolved on my own, without an external reference. You might find my attempt to explain how it works earlier in this thread, when another poster asked the same question. Sadly, I must have done a very poor job in explaining it, since it seems he had no idea what I was talking about.
pralinkova-princezna Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2007  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Exactly.. a lack of the snap function discourages me from playing with the dolls too long.
It looks like your script is rather difficult, like combined of more conditions. I would do with a simple one. When I have the chance, I will experiment, maybe I will find something. This is a nice inspiration so far. :)

I know how to do things like this, considering experience with actionscript/playing puzzle games/the knack for figuring things out... But I don't know one thing::: WHERE IN THE MANSION OF PENCILS DID YOU GET THE PROGRAMMY THINGY FROM?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! A web search for it? THE MANSION OF PENCILS??? I'm going cuckoo!!! And not for cocoa puffs neither nuh uh...
Akito01 Featured By Owner Sep 4, 2007
In all honesty, all the programming was done by myself from scratch. As it turns out, ActionScript is barely any different from the BASIC programming language I grew up learning.

As you might guess, each bit of clothing is it's own movie symbol. The different frames in that movie clip have the different colors for that particular item of clothing. Global variables keep track of which frame is to be played (the current color), and whether that item of clothing is on or off -if off, then the alpha for that clip is set to 0 (invisible). The buttons on the side simply change the variables. There's a little more to it than that, but that covers the basics of how my dolls work.

Angie rocks!!! She's my favorite person in the game. I love the game, very fun, very creative, I'm stuck on the Savato level with Dr. Blackwell. Sorry, a little obsessed with the game. You should've seen me the few days I was obsessed with 'Trace Memory' and that't all I would tock about. I will never look at D's chest the same way (Only people who've played the game will get that) I ran around and said, "Dad! Dad! You'll never guess what happened!! _____ is the murderer!!!!" It was insane. :D

I do have one more doll locked away in a state of incompletion on my computer that may eventually get finished, though I have another thing going right now, so I can't say if and when it will get done.

Ahaha after I read your comment I tried to stand in a pose like that.
And yes, I fell over.
But I held it for a few seconds.
It's really tricky because she's LEANING over, instead of bending at the waist [although it sort of looks like that if you stare at it for a while you'll see I'm right] and she's standing with one foot on TOP of the other, looking in the other direction.
Ahahaha I love my brain. =DDD
