An illustration for the story Brother and Sister by the Brothers Grimm. I'm actually very happy with how it came out.
Plus it was a nice change from drawing my own characters all the time.

But he had already kneeled by the side of the brook and stooped and drunk of the water, and as the first drops passed his lips he became a fawn.

And the sister wept over her poor lost brother, and the fawn wept also, and stayed sadly beside her.

I am still not decided whether I like having an ink lineart before applying the paint or not...You mostly work without inked line-art right?

I love this story, but I guess I would be lying if I said I didn't like any of Grimm's tales, even if some of them are unknown. But this illustration is simply beautiful and I feel it illustrates it perfectly!

What a strange story- I have the Grimm tales on my Kindle (e-book reader) but I don't remember seeing that one. Thank you! The way you've posed the figures is extraordinarly evocative of the relationship between the two siblings, and somehow you've suggested, even in his sorrow, the energy and willfulness of the fawn. There is a dreamlike quality to the narrative, rather unlike a lot of the Grimm stories, which quite live up to their name- the way you've done the trees suggests the malevolence of the Witch lurking in the background! (technically speaking, the best trees I've seen you do. Excellent work. The unlined shadows of the trees behind also) But my favorite part is the sister- what a depth of delicacy and caring you've managed to suggest .

Thank you so much! I have to say I'm not too fond of the Grimm tales the sense of justice they present is very alien to me. I felt this one is a bit more mysterious and, as you said, dreamlike than most so this is why I focused on it. I'm so glad you said this about the trees. I put a lot of effor into them - actually looking at real ones before sketching! The caring of the sister for the brother was an interesting aspect of the story for me so I tried to express this. I'm glad it worked!

You're very welcome! The character of the sister in the story was interesting ,I thought- so much left unsaid. How was it she alone could detect the spell laid on the brooks? I'm guessing she was like one of those Zen mystics who has great magical powers but is in a state of spiritual perfection such that she never uses them in an agressive way to upset the balance of the Tao. And the character of the witch to my mind sums up everything that's wrong about witches- using one's power for selfish ends inevitably rebounds. The way the sister came back to life, also, is very un-Grimm like, hinting at a dimension to the tale that goes far beyond the harsh realities of the age. The brothers only collected the stories, you know- I wonder where they heard that one?
