This is just a quick, "I'm not dead" journal, with some basic update information.
So work has sucked up a lot of my time lately, which also gives me money, which means I caved and bought a PS4, which now means I have a Twitch.tv channel where I livestream gameplay when I'm doing something else when I should be writing (So like, most of the time). You can find it here - www.twitch.tv/akataras
I may or may not make a special journal that updates when I'm livestreaming gameplay or not, depends how often I use the feature and how annoying that might get.
While we're still on the topic of gaming, you can blame it for the sudden return and update of my I See Fire short series. You see, I See Fire started out as a shameless tribute/homage to an iconic trope/moments in The Hobbit. Once again, something related to Tolkien has set the literary wheels in motion again, and thanks to the fantastic Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor that I've been playing (and streaming) religiously lately, something in the back of my little writer head seems to have clicked back on after it set off a bit of a Silmarillion and Middle Earth nostalgia session in the back of my mind. (That and certain parallels between things in Shadow of Mordor and my own works. The whole spirit hitching a ride in someone else's body thing is verrrrry familiar)
Now then, as I said, I See Fire has returned. I won't be updating it as frequently as I tried to in the beginning, as work takes up a lot of my time, and gaming helps me unwind far quicker and more easily than writing. So no weekly/bi-weekly updates where the story flies out in a rushed/edited form. You can find the two new chapters (Yes, two in the same day, I'm scared too.) in my gallery, or just follow these thumbnails:
I See Fire - Part VIIA sphere of blazing blue flame leapt from between Vincent's fingers with a sweep of his hand. The ball of bright fire soared from his fingertips, and just as it flew between the two bandit archers taking aim for him, Vincent snapped his fingers.
A muted, low hum filled the air for a moment, followed by a roar, and the fireball exploded in a flash of blue flames, spraying outward in a horizontal corona. The flames themselves left the two bandits untouched, but the resulting explosive force threw them away from each other in opposite directions, tumbling across the ground.
Their bows had been knocked from their hands and their arrows scattered from their quivers in the explosion, leaving them unarmed as well as off their feet.
Before the archers could recover, Vincent was on the move. His sword took light, wreathed in blue flames that coiled around it and writhed with the same ferocity as the fire that had been reflected in his eyes.
The edge of his burning blade met wi
I See Fire - Part VIIIVincent kept his blade balanced upon his shoulder when he entered the opening of the tunnel, hilt gripped ready in case of sudden surprises within the tunnel, feet planted firmly on the dirt below while his eyes adjusted to the dimmer lighting. His eyes flicked over the path ahead quickly, but found no signs of an impending or hidden attack.
The entrance tunnel gave way to a much larger tunnel within, openings to other passages dotted about the walls, low-burning lanterns hung on the walls to light the way. In truth the passages looked more like a mine than a true cave, with wooden beams and struts to support the rock above, located all over the place. The location was otherwise unremarkable, and looked like any other modified cave tunnel that bandits would occupy, simple and uncomplicated, perfect for those living a life outside the law, or against it.

If you don't remember what was going on, (which is understandable, the story dropped off the radar for nine months) I'd recommend starting from the beginning again, as while each chapter is written in a way that lets it stand alone and something you can hop into without absolutely having to have read the chapters before it to understand what's going on, it is starting to veer into more complicated territory, and a refresher course might be useful. Here's a link to the beginning to save you rooting around in my gallery for it: I See Fire - Prologue
And with that bit out of the way, onto an interesting little thing: The 12th of October is Vincent's in-character birthday, which is one of the main reasons I got off my ass and took the time to quickly edit the two new chapters after putting them in their 'finished but in need of editing' stage during the week. It felt appropriate to release them today, and both at the same time, instead of delaying the other till a week later for release schedule purposes and the like, considering Vincent is the main character.
After having worked on them on and off for the last few months, constantly battling with whether or not to introduce certain concepts and how to handle certain scenarios, I'm glad I was able to move forwards with the series and get it continued, even if you might not see another update for like a month.
So that's that, just a quick update, I'm not entirely out of my hiatus, but I poked my head out for a bit and finished off two chapters that have been brewing for months for the sake of a special occasion.
Oh and for those of you that are fond of Vincent. I'm a fairly avid FFXIV player, and a part of its roleplay community, and tend to roleplay characters from my writing, in games that I play. Vincent is no exception, and since my characters stay basically the same across game universes, he has a blog of his own that I use for general Final Fantasy stuff and in-character shenanigans, here: vincent-the-valorous.tumblr.co…
I tend to use it to keep me writing as him at the very least during my dry spells.
Welp, that's about it.
Tl;dr: I'm doing okay, I See Fire got an update, Shadow of Mordor is a great game, it's Vincent's birthday! Yay
