Excalibur - A Short Poem
I saw inside his clear eyes, a blue that burned so bright,
I had not thought to e'er find, a fire inside that light,
His blade a twin unto his gaze, of sheer azure sight,
A sword of sea and sky and star, to stand against the night,
An edge so keen to carve the shade, and eyes that bore no fright,
Twas not the weapon, nor the man, that held such fierce might,
But the will that shone within, to stand and do what's right.
A sword of heroes, gods and men, fit for a King of Knights.
No less noble for one who dreams, for that is why he fights.

I See Fire - Part VIII
Vincent kept his blade balanced upon his shoulder when he entered the opening of the tunnel, hilt gripped ready in case of sudden surprises within the tunnel, feet planted firmly on the dirt below while his eyes adjusted to the dimmer lighting. His eyes flicked over the path ahead quickly, but found no signs of an impending or hidden attack.
The entrance tunnel gave way to a much larger tunnel within, openings to other passages dotted about the walls, low-burning lanterns hung on the walls to light the way. In truth the passages looked more like a mine than a true cave, with wooden beams and struts to support the rock above, located all over the place. The location was otherwise unremarkable, and looked like any other modified cave tunnel that bandits would occupy, simple and uncomplicated, perfect for those living a life outside the law, or against it.

A sphere of blazing blue flame leapt from between Vincent's fingers with a sweep of his hand. The ball of bright fire soared from his fingertips, and just as it flew between the two bandit archers taking aim for him, Vincent snapped his fingers.
A muted, low hum filled the air for a moment, followed by a roar, and the fireball exploded in a flash of blue flames, spraying outward in a horizontal corona. The flames themselves left the two bandits untouched, but the resulting explosive force threw them away from each other in opposite directions, tumbling across the ground.
Their bows had been knocked from their hands and their arrows scattered from their quivers in the explosion, leaving them unarmed as well as off their feet.
Before the archers could recover, Vincent was on the move. His sword took light, wreathed in blue flames that coiled around it and writhed with the same ferocity as the fire that had been reflected in his eyes.

Chosen - A Short Dark Souls Poem
Chosen
Leave me oh my Lord of Dawn, to rest beneath this ground.
Let me be a flame aslumber, beyond where hope is found.
Until hope is born anew again upon this lonely earth,
I shall not waken from this dark.
Till all embers lost and lone again, must waken from the hearth.
And heralds of an age of flame,  shall rise upon your mark.

I See Fire - Part VI
As the small barge drifted away from the town of Girion, Vincent watched the floating settlement fade amidst that morning's thick fog. He stood upon the prow of the boat, wrapped in both the mist of the morn, and the gear gifted to him by the order that had sheltered him the night before.
Garbed in a set of armour and cloak given to him by the Brothers and Sisters of the Gilded Flame. The quality of the equipment he had been given was a testament to how appreciated the group were for their healing talents and hospitality.
He wore a cuirass of banded white and black leather, a thin layer of chainmail concealed between the layers of the armour. The cuirass itself was thin, and worn beneath a surcoat coloured white with a black trim. Over this he wore a two strap harness that crossed over his chest over either shoulder, a golden medallion set into the centre of the buckle over his heart, an emblem of a flame etched into it. A black leather belt around his waist, fastened with a buckle bea

I See Fire - Part V
Vincent's footsteps thudded with a squelch on the wood beneath his feet, and water spattered from him as he ran, the boy soaked from head to toe due to his unexpected emergency swim in the lake. Despite the ramshackle layout of the town, he was able to find his way back to where the front entrance of the tavern would have been, had it not burned down, collapsed, and started sinking into the lake mere minutes ago.
He rounded the corner, only to find that a crowd had gathered, drawn to the destruction, the likes of which their small town had never seen. Vincent pushed through the assembled audience and was met with the sight of the last few patrons of the tavern that he had helped escape the chaos, before he had been trapped inside the burning building and forced to find his own route away from the flames.
They faced away from him, and looked out over at where the building had stood, smouldering wreckage still crumbling to pieces and sinking into the lake. The two patrons he d

There Vincent stood, in the almost empty tavern, with its scorched banisters, overturned tables, scattered chairs and scuffed floors. Most of the patrons had fled in the chaos that caused, and the source of it had been subdued. His enemy was defeated, the enchantress Esmera unconscious at his feet. Her rapier discarded and useless at her side, and her control over those who had served and fought her, lost as she slept.
After his words had finished echoing in the ears of all who stood witness to them, his eyes flashed over each of them in turn. Satisfied that they no longer had any doubts in his honesty, he stabbed his blade into the tavern floor for them to get a proper look at it, and turned away from them to inspect his fallen opponent.
With the blade on display, the remaining patrons, Beirahn, Angelo and a few stragglers who Vincent did not know, had a chance to view the sword that had been drawn in a flash of light.
It was a silver blade, of impractical shape, and

Angelo was the first to initiate combat, making the first move by sprinting toward Vincent. Vincent responded in kind by making his own charge, hurrying to meet his opponent. Though neither of them wished to fight each other, they had only the freedom to choose how they fought, not whether they fought at all.
When the distance between them had closed, Angelo made the first attack, sending a clenched fist careening toward Vincent's jaw. The lithe young man ducked under it, sliding to the floor beneath the swing and making one of his own with a sweep of his legs. Angelo leaped away from the sweep, and while he evaded, Vincent turned the moment of the move into a roll back onto his feet. He had only a moment to spare to realise that his opponent had already charged again, this time aiming a kick at his neck.
Vincent blocked with an arm, and another kick came as swift as the first, blocked with his other arm. Angelo switched tactics again and threw a palm strike toward the cent

The tavern was musty, and while a small pub by certain standards, made the most of its limited space by having an overlook that circled the whole lower level, built into the upper sections of the building. As rickety as the rest of the town, and a little dusty, but a cosy place to spend an afternoon, none the less. There was no floor plan to speak of, and tables and chairs seemed to be arrayed wherever they were needed or moved to by the patrons. The only location on the lower floor where they couldn't possibly be placed was in the center, which was taken up by the box of a bar. Four corners, four walls, all of them lined from top to bottom with mugs and liquor of all shapes, kinds and sizes.
Much like the town itself, and from what Vincent had seen, the people in it too, the tavern gave him a sense of comfort and ease he had not experienced in a while. Even the name of the place caused him to smirk with glee, any pub that called itself "The Drunken Dragon" would get Vincent's at

I See Fire - Part I
Six centuries after the fateful words were spoken. A traveler visited the humble town from which they had been uttered, a cloak of black was pulled tight around their shoulders, and a hood hid their face from prying eyes.
They had spotted the town from atop a hill that overlooked the massive lake that surrounded it, which itself was almost encircled by an immense mountain range. The circle of mountains was broken by the colossal waterfall that marked most of its southern edge. A perilous drop off a shear mountainside, with an immense flow of water pouring from the very top of it far far below. To say the area housing the lake and town was mountainous would be an understatement, when a mountain has other mountains upon it, the term mountainous seems somewhat inadequate.
Chief of these immense mounds of natural stone and rock, was a mountain to the north of the lake. In truth it was not a mountain on its own, and was in fact the absolute peak of the  mountain upon which

I See Fire - Prologue
"I see fire. I see flame."
The words were spoken, hushed and strained. The lips that passed them, old and frail. The eyes that see, blind and dim. The flesh that binds them, torn and scarred. One hundred tragedies visited upon one woman, now enfeebled, blind, and about to die. Her long life had been filled with misery, from the very moment she had first set eyes on the fire. It was the last thing she ever saw, and the only thing she could see since. Until one night, she saw something different, and all of a sudden, everyone was listening to her.
"I see shadow. I see pain."
They called her mad, deranged, just a strange woman that had staggered into their town sixty years ago, babbling about fire and death. She spoke in whispers, of creatures too grand and terrible to exist. Nonsense they called it, madness. They did not believe her. Children threw stones, adults scorned and mocked, travelers ignored her, not once did anyone simply listen. No-one wanted to hear the ramblings of a mad old

What Could Have Been (Dragon Age II Fanfiction)
What Could Have Been
Laughter, slurred words, tankards clattering, the occasional crashing noise and a slap or two. These were the timeless sounds of the ever musty Hanged Man, a strong contender for the titles of both Kirkwall's grimiest and liveliest tavern. On that night in particular, a certain patron contributed certain other emotions to the tavern's atmosphere.
Fenris sat at a corner of the tavern, hunched over a bottle, with his expression dour. He mulled over the events of the previous few days, while others laughed and joked. He should have had every reason to be laughing with them, but recent events had not ended exactly the way he had hoped.
Danarius was dead. For years, all Fenris had known was running, fighting, surviving. Escape at all costs, freedom no matter the price. He had finally obtained the prize he had coveted. He was finally free, but his victory tasted of ashes and blood. He ordered another bottle in the hopes that something could wash it away. Doubt and

Memoir Of An Unknown Author
In this world, there are two very different kinds of people. Those who live, and those who die.
You can choose either option, life or death, picking one is as easy as breathing. Sometimes, the choice may not even be yours. Who lives, who dies, everyone has the power to choose but few have the strength to act on that choice. Some lack the strength to protect a life when they need it most, and in their weakness, a life is lost beyond where they can reach.
Few understand the price and weight of life. I know I don't. To value one life over all others, simply because that's the life you chose to cherish, is a selfish action. To be driven by one life over others, is callous. To cherish any life even more than your own is foolish.
I was a fool once. A selfish fool.
I often wonder how things would turn out had things been different.
What if I never met them?
What if they never died?
What if I saved them?
What if... the reality matched up to the d

Hey there! I'm Akataras, a hobbyist writer. I prefer to write fantasy but will dabble into other genres from time to time. I hope you'll learn to love, hate, and want to touch my characters inappropriately just as much as I do.

I can be a difficult person to get along with at times. If sarcasm, dry wit, dark humour and a tendency toward the surreal aren't your cup of tea, I probably won't be tasty to you either. (And if you don't like tea of any kind, get off my page, heathen.) I can sometimes come across as arrogant or condescending... I'm getting better, but I'm still working on shaking that off.

Anyway, I've wasted enough of your time and no-one reads text walls. If you'd like to know more about me for some insane reason (Like seriously, what's wrong with you? I'm like a walking poison) you can either talk to me on here, or check out my tumblr - akataras.tumblr.com/
Interests
This is just a quick, "I'm not dead" journal, with some basic update information.

So work has sucked up a lot of my time lately, which also gives me money, which means I caved and bought a PS4, which now means I have a Twitch.tv channel where I livestream gameplay when I'm doing something else when I should be writing (So like, most of the time). You can find it here - www.twitch.tv/akataras

I may or may not make a special journal that updates when I'm livestreaming gameplay or not, depends how often I use the feature and how annoying that might get.

While we're still on the topic of gaming, you can blame it for the sudden return and update of my I See Fire short series. You see, I See Fire started out as a shameless tribute/homage to an iconic trope/moments in The Hobbit. Once again, something related to Tolkien has set the literary wheels in motion again, and thanks to the fantastic Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor that I've been playing (and streaming) religiously lately, something in the back of my little writer head seems to have clicked back on after it set off a bit of a Silmarillion and Middle Earth nostalgia session in the back of my mind. (That and certain parallels between things in Shadow of Mordor and my own works. The whole spirit hitching a ride in someone else's body thing is verrrrry familiar)

Now then, as I said, I See Fire has returned. I won't be updating it as frequently as I tried to in the beginning, as work takes up a lot of my time, and gaming helps me unwind far quicker and more easily than writing. So no weekly/bi-weekly updates where the story flies out in a rushed/edited form. You can find the two new chapters (Yes, two in the same day, I'm scared too.) in my gallery, or just follow these thumbnails:

If you don't remember what was going on, (which is understandable, the story dropped off the radar for nine months) I'd recommend starting from the beginning again, as while each chapter is written in a way that lets it stand alone and something you can hop into without absolutely having to have read the chapters before it to understand what's going on, it is starting to veer into more complicated territory, and a refresher course might be useful. Here's a link to the beginning to save you rooting around in my gallery for it: I See Fire - Prologue

And with that bit out of the way, onto an interesting little thing: The 12th of October is Vincent's in-character birthday, which is one of the main reasons I got off my ass and took the time to quickly edit the two new chapters after putting them in their 'finished but in need of editing' stage during the week. It felt appropriate to release them today, and both at the same time, instead of delaying the other till a week later for release schedule purposes and the like, considering Vincent is the main character.

After having worked on them on and off for the last few months, constantly battling with whether or not to introduce certain concepts and how to handle certain scenarios, I'm glad I was able to move forwards with the series and get it continued, even if you might not see another update for like a month.

So that's that, just a quick update, I'm not entirely out of my hiatus, but I poked my head out for a bit and finished off two chapters that have been brewing for months for the sake of a special occasion.

Oh and for those of you that are fond of Vincent. I'm a fairly avid FFXIV player, and a part of its roleplay community, and tend to roleplay characters from my writing, in games that I play. Vincent is no exception, and since my characters stay basically the same across game universes, he has a blog of his own that I use for general Final Fantasy stuff and in-character shenanigans, here: vincent-the-valorous.tumblr.co…

I tend to use it to keep me writing as him at the very least during my dry spells.

Welp, that's about it.

Tl;dr: I'm doing okay, I See Fire got an update, Shadow of Mordor is a great game, it's Vincent's birthday! Yay :la:

He heard you were just his kind of guy
He's carrying presents in a big, black bag

Either way he's happy for you
