Hello! I am here with feedback for Julo E’s round.
I was surprised when you took a step back from Vapama this round and enrolled an entirely new character from a completely different genre. Julo E has been fun to follow and learn about through her tasks. She is a young and driven artist who loves what she does, and that is always nice to see. I appreciate how you incorporated dance into most of her tasks and the flow and motion that each piece has. It was nice to see comic pages as well. Am I correct in assuming that you are making a comic starring Julo E? If so, I look forward to reading it.
Here are my observations on your art this round.
You definitely improved upon the directional shading from the last round. The shadows on Julo E’s body follow her muscle contours and are a really nice detail. The shading on the fabrics of her clothes is great, too. It gives them a lot of texture and makes them feel light. Your color choices are nice as well. The pastel palette really conveys that it is a lighthearted slice of life story.
You could potentially push this shading even further. On many of your drawings of Julo E, there are bright white highlights in her hair, implying a strong light source. You could then come in with some darker darks to balance this out and show heightened contrast whenever she is under those bright performing lights.
In other pieces, where she is not in the studio or on a stage, it might help to shade with the color of the light source or the sky. For example, in your enjoyment piece, some very subtle blues bouncing off her and Rose would help tie them to their environment. You did very well with this in the personal life comic page. The warm and subtle light in her hair allows for the detail in the hair to be seen and it is very nice. The darker shadows also help create balance in the image. Keep pushing this, because it looks great.
As for story, I still feel like I know very little about Julo E. New characters are exciting because there is so much potential. I am curious about her life outside of being a student and an artist as well. What are her friends like, what is her family like, why does she want to be a mermaid free diver, etc… It will be nice to someday learn the stakes in her story as well. Like if she’s struggling with preparing for a big dance or trying to maintain a work/life balance. Writing from the POV of an arts student comes with a lot of potential story hooks, so it will be interesting to see where you take it.
Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more of your characters.
Thank you for your feedback. I'll back to it when I ruturn ftom my holiday.
I started comic featuring Julo E, but the round gave me loads of ideas for backstory and style. So I'm going to start again.
I have loads of ideas for Vapamian characters that I hope to draw within my lifetime. High probably I'll be back to them.
Thanks for the favorite!
I'm definitely getting better at drawing.
Yes, you reached for a pleasing proportionw with features in Clip. Good work!
