Ok so a bat has been living with me in the basement and I finally caught him. But I feel sad because I need to know if it is rabid. Only way to do that is to send it to a vet and kill it, then send it to a lab.

Treatment if it is positive (about 6% chance so low) is about 3000$+ and for animals, since I have two cats, they need to be quarantined or put down.

Would life stop f-ing with me FOR ONE DAMN WEEK?!

week 1 - forced vacation
Week 2 - kicked out
Week 3 - hard drive fails
Week 4 - random bat in a county known for the state's only rabid bats.

Lovely. Thankfully my cats should be up to date on vaccines, and odds are very much in my favor. Hopefully it will stay that way because I don't have insurance or 3000$+.

Probably overreacting but 6% is too much for me to say "not gonna worry". Not when I got two cats and me to think about.

most humane way to kill it is snap the neck or decapitation :C remember to keep the body on ice.

I'm sorry you gotta do this, you really can't catch a break can you...

Rabid bats can't fly and likely won't run away from you when you approach
They would also need to bite your cat, or your cat eat their head to get it (It spreads via spit/snot) If neither of those were an issue I wouldn't worry about it ^^ (and if you dont believe me you can go look up how to contract rabies to comfort yourself a little).

While it is true, you don have to be rabid to be contagious and not all forms of rabies involve paralysis. This is based on what the vet told me at the diagnostic clinic I took it to. The bat didn't run or try to get away while I was getting it down from the ceiling. Then again, they don't see well to begin with.

Either way I will find out on Monday the results of the test on the bat. Odds are in my favor about 95/5 so I'm not too worried.
