I often stay up all night to finish some assignment, but I'd never bother if it's just for a better grade. I don't really see what impact grades have (at this level, high school was another matter), besides getting scholarships? Then again, I'm not studying art nor in the USA.
I would, it really depends on the class. I hate to think a teacher would think I'm lazy or ignoring their class. and also I agree, if it is for scholarships, it's a little different. I'm not on any though. e__e
I'm that kind of guy that things either work out, or they blow up catastrophically in my face and i deal with the blowout. Regardless of the class or assignment, i would just say "screw it" and settle for something poorly done. Whatever the consequence, in the grand scheme of life, the universe, and EVERYTHING, it really doesn't matter.
it can matter, especially if you are in scholarships, where even the slightest point in gpa drop can affect it. Luckily I'm not on that limitation, but I worry about teachers seeing me as lazy or not understanding. I just need sleep. XD
I see your point, but i suffer from the "Lazy Bones" philosophy. I believe that something is going to happen no matter what you do, so why bother trying to change it? I go with what interests me at the time, and for some reason, things work out. I do, however, have the feeling that my luck's going to run out, but eh...
Staying up all night would mean the next day I'm done and I'd probably miss my class. So I'd rather get a good portion done that night, sleep, and get up a little early to finish it. That way I'm not completely drained.
I think it's really situational. If I didn't care about the class much then I would just hand in whatever I had, minimal effort. But if it's something I want to get a really good grade in then I would either stay up or hand it in late. I think I get 5% deduction for each day it's late at my uni but if I can change my mark from 50% to 80% in a day then that 5% penalty is worth it (40% is a pass here). I was in this situation last year when I stayed up for a solid 30 hours working on an assignment but I got a good grade in the end. xD
What I get myself into that situation is get started so I know where I'm going, then go to sleep and set my alarm for *crazy* early (usually 04:00 depending on when my class is) and do the assignment then. I find I'm much more focused after a "nap." I struggle through the day but at least the assignment is done well. Also, I wont try to say that it's easy getting up after that amount of sleep either. XD
I always stayed up to get things done no matter what. My best work tends to be at night, even when I'm tired. As long as I was in school I was able to muster the strength to do it, and I found ways of keeping it from stressing me out. I like good grades XD
I was also wary in college of getting low grades on anything, because whereas in grade school teachers notice 'improvement' and will grade you likewise in later projects, a bad grade on an assignment usually was a black mark on your rep with a professor in college, and it'd be harder to get better grades later on.
A heaping majority of the time, I would only stay up half the night and settle for the C, but with a twist. Provided the class is later in the day, I'd use my time wisely and struggle to get it done. It has happened many times before and I have passed with a good grade. Because I get the sleep I need plus some time in the day to do it.
But if the situation were more like the one you mentioned, and the class was early in the morning, I do settle for the C grade, as sleep is pretty important to me. Sometimes, I write a great draft and change a few things about it overnight, and it lands me a better grade. A good prayer is needed in order for this to happen.
For me is depends, I can't sleepfo r like 3-4 hours and get up easily. It's very hard for me to get up early and work on something. ;-; Most of my classes are after 12pm, so I can sleep at 2-3 and wake up at 7-8 and still have a few hours to work.
To be honest, I would say get some sleep and work on it tomorrow.
I've had a similar senario just recenty. I handed in my grant proposal a day late... but the thing is, because I was so tired and rushing to finish it, be luck to get around a C, however hand it in late though, finished properly with a fresh head, and though Im penalised for a day late, teh quality in the hand in is better, so Ill still probably get around a C, but have a chance at a B if I did well enough. Well thats my reasoning anyway.
Most of my assignments I'm not allowed to hand in late. I'd get a zero instead. Though sometimes I'm allowed to redo them for better grades later, but most teachers don't do that. Usually we get penalized for a day late as well, 10% usually.
I normally would stay up and do my best, however after reading a lot of these answers it seems better to take what you can get and not sacrifice yourself physically or mentally for it if it won't hurt that much grade wise.
Personally, I'd settle for the C, since I have done both things, and staying up all night to add to it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a better grade. Besides, there have been a few times that I very nearly didn't get my assignments handed in because I stayed up so late that I fell asleep at my screen
