So, it was New Years Eve, December 31, 2013 and I had my sparkling apple cider and was quite content to go to bed. It was about 12:40ish (now New Year's Day), and I remember because I had just talked to my brother over the phone wishing me a happy new year. He's out at Ft. Wheeler in Hawaii for military training and stuff.
Anyway, so I go to bed after that and I wake up about 2:55am hearing something. I know it was 2:50-something, my clock is analog, but glows in the dark and it's really easy to see. I saw that number and freaked, I can be superstitious, and with it being New Years, I was a little edgy. At first, I thought originally it was a baby crying. My neighbor has one and so I figured that's all it was. All the fireworks might have woken her up. I realized that, listening closer, it wasn't a baby, and wasn't coming from that direction. I walk out into my kitchen from my room and here something making a soft noise and figure out it is coming from my storage room (where I keep all my packing boxes and big things). I open the door and this orange cat comes running out into my kitchen mewing like crazy.
I'm like .... this random cat is in my apartment? I have watched my mom's cats before, so I had food and a litterbox handy. I figured I'll feed him and then decide what to do. I took a video and put it on FB, but nobody decided to comment. XD It was the middle of the night. I fed him and gave him water and he seemed quite content to stay here in my apartment, despite taking him outside with me. He jumped right back in as I when back inside.
The only way I could explain that he got into my apartment was the dryer duct. I live on the first floor, and I have a duct that goes through the floor under the building... but it's completely blocked off from the outside, so there is no easy way to get under the building. I mean there IS, but it wouldn't be easy. Our landlord is very very particular about making sure animals don't get under the buildings. But still , he looks BARELY small enough to get through and it's one heck of a jump... How strange, yes?
I waited a day or two to see if he would leave, and he never did. Still he won't. XD So... I adopted him. I took him to the vet and got his shots up, got him neutered and all that jazz... Lately we found he actually has some sort of worms, which didn't surprise the vet at all since he was a stray before-hand. They also placed him at a year old, so he's a fairly young guy. I'll get lots of time with my new familiar. So we are getting him cleaned up and I'm having to go through de-fleaing my apartment. Fun, but I'm glad to do it if it means I can keep him.
Since he woke me up around 3am, and that's considered the "witching hour", I named him "Salem". I am a bit superstitious, OK a lot superstitious, and I'm hoping the name can help a bit with keeping my home and me happy. I've been careful to do a few extra smudges just in case. XD I know it sounds silly to a lot of people, but I do follow the seasonal changes and natural flows of energy around. I've always loved to find it and be in tune to it.
So here are some photos of my Salem for you all!
