Back + Life

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 13, 2015, 9:43 PM

So it is back to the real world for me. I'm not really looking forward to being part of it again. Megacon was fun and I had a great time. I roomed with xBloodShadow and savannahrcb and it was uber fun. We had a lot of fun talking and having some good food and even sat up and drew one night! SavinoWolf stopped by when we drew and drew some with us too. :D

xBloodShadow drew this on a cintiq at the Ringling table.
On the right is me at dinner. XD I don't know why I made that face.

We had a really nice sunset too and carried Ahk around with us in our bags. XD

On Sunday I met up with GoldenDruid to say hi since it had been almost a whole year since I seen her last. Also she gave me an alabaster carving of Ahk by Paintzapper! It's so awesome and I simply love it! Go show his carvings and sculpting some love, he's really awesome at it!

I got a few things for me, namely Ash Ketchum's hat which I have wanted since I was a kid and just never bought it. XD I will still wear my main one, but now I have another one for fun days. :D I am not a belt person, but since I've lost so much weight, I bought a belt to help hold up the pants I do have so I don't have to spend tons on buying new clothes. e__e It'll save money in the long run.

I also got a few little things. The main thing I got was two signatures from Norman Reedus / Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead. I got two because one was for NukeRooster and the other was for me. I ended up waiting in line for 6 hours on Saturday just to be turned away after he got caught up in the Photo sessions with con guests. We were all pretty upset when we realized we weren't going to get his signature and I was so worried I'd wasted my day. I worked on some art while I had waited, so I got some thesis homework done.

Reedus evidently felt bad about that and so he actually canceled his flight so he could stay an extra stay just for us! They gave us all special tickets and told us to come back the next day if we were able. So we were given the vip ticket and the next day when I went to the signature booth, I was pretty much put in front of the line. I felt bad about going in front of everyone since I knew how it was waiting for so long. e_____e but I waited for 6 hours the previous day.

I was able to get two signatures (at a painful 80$ EACH) but Tatchit paid me back for hers, and after waiting that long, I wanted one too. XD I at first was going to have him sign one of the prints he has, but after a while I wanted him to sign something better. So I had him sign the Thesis cover I worked on, the pencil one. Here are some crappy photos of them.

I also got certificate of authenticity for both of them, that was pretty cheap, so I did that.

and now comes Life

So it is time for the real world again. I've come face to face with a hard reality. So far I have not been granted an interview and prospects are looking very shaky. I'm unsure why, maybe I'm just not what people are looking for. Maybe I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So, I'm looking for a "normal" job at the moment. I'm hoping to get one at a printers since I have art skills. Plus, printing is insanely important process things to know as an artist, so I consider it a learning opportunity. I need at minimum 1200 a month to survive, and I don't see me getting that in commissions and freelance alone. Not yet. So hopefully a "normal" job and commissions on the side after work will help me out.

I'm honestly really scared, not gonna lie. This is a serious changing point where I am about to step out on my own. No schooling, no real solid family support. Just me. It's scary, but I think it'll be a real eye-opening experience. I've been about 75% on my own for 2 years now, I've had some help every now and then.

;-; That final step is coming up in three weeks. From there it'll be another learning curve. Not really looking forward to it, but I'll make it work. I was supposed to move in with Tatchit over summer, however I don't really have my share or any idea how I'll get the money I need or how much I'll get. XD I look forward to cranking out art though! I'll never have homework again, so once I'm home from work, I can devote myself to commissions.

So I'm off to get back to work on finals. Later guys. x-x

No more homework and more time for commissions sounds like it'll be really good, while losing the equipment and environment you get from school (as well as guidance and critiques) is a bit of a downside.
I do think that getting a normal job is a good idea until you can support yourself on your own later. I just did some quick math- if you decided to work 6 hours 5 days a week (4 weeks to a month), and if you could make about $400 from commissions, then you should find a job that pays at least $6 or 7 an hour... you could also set up a Paetron (if you haven't done so already); I hope you find one that will give you helpful experience and you will enjoy! GOOD LUCK IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS!

Also, the printing job teaches more valuable things I should know about as an artist.

I would NEVER work for 6$ an hour. That's below minimum wage here and an insult to me having worked so hard for my education. I hate to say I'm a bit choosey at the moment about how much I want to make for a "normal job" but it's out of what I need to maintain my home. I'm not sure how much in commissions I'll get since I don't have the huge base many others do. I hope to increase that by drawing a wire range of things, including fan art and other popular deals.

I do have a patreon but I'll admit I'm a bit slow there at the moment being wrapped up in only producing college artworks. Once I'm able to produce work I feel is worth putting up there, I'll be able to work on that more.

Whoops about the salary thought, still in high school and don't know a thing about the world lol
Although I do hope everything works out :) If you find a job you like, I'm sure it will.
Just a random thought popped up... how would you feel about having your own website? :3

Minimum wage varies state to state, country to country and here in Florida, I believe it's 8$ and hour. Most artists make 10-20$ an hour, but get less work over all. So although I'd be making more per hour, I'm not sure I could find the time/hours to work.

I am currently working on coding it. So I already have one.

Yeah, I can't wait for that part. I'm ok with having commissions since they pay bills and such. XD Homework doesn't.
