Old Pine by Ahkward Old Pine by Ahkward

I did this all in one night, sorry if it is weird or incorrect style. I am kinda rushed for time since it's due in 3 hours. xnx

After doing my research paper on Buddhist landscapes, I found that the use of simplicity and zen in landscapes was something I still was curious about. I didn’t quite understand how a landscape could be more “zen” than anything else. I wasn’t sure how to make it that way. In our classes, typically those who add in much detail and pain-staking care are the works that are rewarded and loved the most. In zen art, things can be thoughtfully and quickly done at the perfect moment, or drawn out in a long meditative process.

My goal was to understand, and so I chose a medium sized artwork. I wanted to understand the thought behind a Buddhist work, so I wanted to add a thought at the top. Nothing really that impacting, but it, to me reflects something personal. In my horrible Japanese skills (unsure if I translated it correctly since my grammar is still shaky), I tried to write:

Old pine sees the start of a new journey. He wishes that they have endurance.

I’m not a poet by any means. However, being a senior this year, I’ve had to come to terms with starting a new journey myself in a few weeks. Graduation is coming up in May and I’ve been quiet nervous about it. I recall Pine being one of the three friends of winter in Chinese art, and I’m sure that has transferred over to Japanese symbolism. Pine is of endurance and strength, something I will be needing in the next few months.

As far as the outcome, the biggest regret I have is that I signed it. I remembered only after going over my essay that signing zen art is not really typical and is seen as egotisical in a way. It’s keeping the identity of self and Zen teaches against that. Other than that, I had a lot of fun working on this and while I was working, I did feel relaxed and could fine time to let my mind just stop running a million miles per hour and rest. Enjoy the moment of painting and the things around me in in the scene. I used ink and a brush. If I could do it again, I would use a smaller brush for the calligraphy, and not sign it. I also placed it in a book to make a long term project. The beginning line on the first page says (or should say):

    The river humbles me.

The idea behind this is that the book will be my own journey as I finish it over time. I plan to sell it in the future... hopefully somebody will want it. XD

Me too, they are always so inspiring to look at. So many of them have such strong symbolism to them.
