Naor Myth - Pon of Sea and War by Ahkward Naor Myth - Pon of Sea and War by Ahkward
More Naori mythology stuff for everyone. This is originally something for Patreon, however I wanted to post a smaller version here.

Facts about Pon:

1. God of both Sea and War. He's typically quite calm, not rash temper, however he has been known for his occasional swings.
2. He and Aekeku, King of Pegramkre are considered related.
3. The Oarfish is considered the King of the Oceans for its beautiful red crown. The color red is sacred to the Naori, so this fish is connected to gods, thus why Pon ornates himself in the style of an Oarfish.
4. He is roughly 8ft tall, namely due to living in the ocean with such large creatures. He himself maintains a large size to be able to take on most sea creatures with ease.
5. He was the second of the Gods created to help govern Naor. The first god was Goh of the lands, who considers Pon his Rival and Brother.
6. I dressed him inspired by the Nias warriors of Indonesia. Naor is south of Java and north of Australia, so I figured it would be a reasonable thing for a war god.
7. His weapon is called a "arbir" and is a type of halberd in terms of class of weapon. It is a weapon also from Indonesia.
8. His shield is made from a whale spine and ribs at its core. The bits between the bones are made from Obsidian, a material known to be found near volcanos (coughNAORcough).
9. He hides his face, usually looking through the mouth of the Oarfish at those he speaks too. This is thought to be due to the glowing orbs seen if you look into the mouth of the Oarfish.

Aha, this is more of a temporary bio. I did this on the fly and didn't really plan out the layout too much. I plan to do a nice one for all my characters eventually.

Bro, Oarfish are BADASS fish. It was screaming Pon's name when I saw it. Strangely enough saw it in Okami for the first time while fishing. XD

Thanks for the compliment.

However please note it isn't cool to advertise yourself on other artists' deviations. It is seen as spam. I see you are new here, so I won't mark it as such. Please do not do it again on my pages.

Oh no worries! XD I've been here almost 9 years to your month or so? :D I always tell people about stuff like that and give people benefit of the doubt. I just don't want other artists to jump on you like I've seen happen to other people. (Cough Instagram people cough)

Anyway, thanks! It's namely a god from a comic I'm writing. I spent about 5 years planning it, writing both the comic script and the mythology for both the cultures in the book. Only in the last year or two did I start actually drawing it. So I've been working on this project about 6-7 years now. XD

Ooooh I like how much you relate Naor to its surrounding islands, you put a lot of work into it C:

AH you have no idea. :iconheaddeskplz: It is so hard to find consistent information. For example, there is little to no information about the "Arbir". I found maybe a few pictures, but I don't think they were accurate since they were all drawings. x-x I couldn't find a single photo... or maybe I wasn't doing a good job that day. XD

I'm glad people are liking all the thought into things. It's one reason it takes so long to finish a lot of drawings. XD

it's a legit reason and you have my respect for how careful you are with the consistencies in your work ^^

Wow he's amazing! He's beautiful. Are those both his weapons on the right side? I've been trying to figure out the whale spine one. Either way he has a great concept!

The arbir is the halberd and the shield is the black thing next to it.

He's so pretty, and I love how the reference is completely traditional, too. Almost all of them are digital. XD

Well this isn't meant to be a full formal ref, a temporary one I guess, but I do plan on making more of these for other gods! I am trying to get better with traditional (mainly color) so this was goo practice for blending! (dat oarfish)
