High Clouds

Because of the freezing temperatures, these are made almost entirely of ice crystals. 

• Cirrus: Thin, wispy, and feathery strands. They usually indicate fair, pleasant weather.

• Cirrostratus: Thin, sheet-like clouds that cover the sky. They are famous for creating a "halo" effect around the Sun or Moon.

• Cirrocumulus: Small, white, patchy ripples resembling fish scales (often called a "mackerel sky").
