Bladeor Grim-son - The White Merc

By AHAKuo

“Listen. I don’t know what nice, old man you took me for, but here is the reality of the situation you were brought into. This man Sleorer Vern who so calls himself the king of Cold’s Wood paid me”—he took the hem of his shirt’s sleeve then started to rip it up—“a considerable amount just so I could get you to him.”

Jenny parted her lips and took a deep breath, “Why?”

He started to wipe the blood from around her face and eye socket as he replied, “Don’t ask me that. I am merely a mercenary told an order and so I did it. Sleorer has the answer to your question.”

Jenny wept and her lips started shaking, “Do you know a wispy named Emerald?”

He stared directly into her left eye, his mind overthinking why someone like this girl was asked to be captured.

“No.”

And she started to cry noisily.

“Shh.”

He pulled out a small bottle that had a heavy, golden liquid.

“Sit back.”

“Huh?”

Bladeor put his hand on her shoulder and pulled her back, “Stretch your knee.”

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?” He said, shaking the bottle. “I just want your head laid down.”

When Jenny got into a sleeping position, he opened the bottle and got ready to fill her eye socket with the golden slime.

“If you have ever been treated this way, then you should know how much this stuff will hurt you,” he said.

“It’s okay. I know.” For the first time in a long period, she felt peaceful.

He … he is kind to me. Then why did he abduct me in the first place?

As the slime started to fill up in her socket, she wondered why she was not feeling anything too insane.

“Hmm. Why, this is interesting. You don’t feel it?” He said.

“I don’t know. I can somehow feel the weight, but not the pain.”

“Congrats. In that sense I can say that you’re probably a badass. Or maybe there is something special about you?”

Jenny knew how to answer but desisted from telling him, no matter how pleasant he seemed.

She smiled faintly.

“Do you know what is going to happen to you?” He said after looking at her as if she was his own daughter.

“No.”

“Heh. Well, let me delight you. They will be taking you back to Bell Heart in a few minutes.”

Jenny was about to sit up but he pushed her back down, “Stay! Stay like you are. The medication has to dry up.”

“Till when?”

“Just wait a few seconds. And when you don’t feel anything moving in your eye, put back the bandage.”

“But it’s soaked and will no longer hold. Don’t you have another?”

He got up, “I guess I could lend you half a meter. Just gotta bring out from the dimensional bag.”

The dimensional bag is a spell that holds someone’s inventory in the void until summoned again. The user would capture an object and then they would summon it whenever they wanted to later in time.

“Can you give me a book to read too?” Jenny asked.

“Getting greedy, are you?” He said.

After a few seconds, the green glow that would appear after summoning something from the void lit the room and Jenny knew he had what she wanted.

“I’ll be leaving the bandage here on this table, alright?” He said.

“Thank you. You are a lot nicer—“

“Don’t get your hopes up or I might break every string in your heart. See you later,” he interfered.

Hello! I’m here again from ProjectComment.

This is a really well done piece – the lighting and shadows on Bladeor just bowls me over. They’re really well done, and add a magnificent depth and atmosphere to the piece. The details on his neck alone – just very impressive.

I like how you worked his eyes and the details of his face – the rises and falls of his cheeks and the like. They go very far in conveying his character and personality – I’m not sure this is the sort of guy I’d be too eager to cross paths with in the wrong way. And the textures of his hair and clothes look very real to me. A really high end quality of work, in my opinion.

As far as the main subject is concerned, my one concern (and only one, really), is how his facial hair looks. It doesn’t leave the same impression his head hair and shirt does – it doesn’t look like stubble, but rather like a costume beard he’s wearing, rather than one he’s growing. Hopefully that doesn’t come across as being harsh, but it stands out because everything else about him is really well done and natural looking. The beard isn’t badly done; it just doesn’t quite fit, is what I mean.

The only other suggestion for improvement I have would me the stone bridge or wall in the background – it is extremely well lit compared to the rest of the picture, and I’m not sure where the source of light is. I’d suggest making it almost as dark as that bottom corner of the wall, and just use of few highlights to let us know it’s there. Either that, or darken the edges but leave one or two areas bright to suggest torches burning somewhere unseen. (Given that the light hits Bladeor from the right, you could probably darken the leftmost edges of the bridge at an angle perpendicular to the wooden wall behind him, and that might give the impression of a torch burning somewhere to the right of the picture’s border.

Overall, though, this is really well done. If I didn’t hit on a topic you were hoping to hear about, just let me know and I’ll swing back.

Actually, your comment was very good! All of your comments on my recent works are very well written, and I find my mistakes through them more than most. Like the bridge you talked about, I just realized this, but will fix this piece soon as I will make another piece with Bladeor in a different context! :P

Again, your comment was invaluable to me! Thank you a lot, Kibble! :D

To the commander of Group 3.

You are to escort the girl whose name is Jenny Da’ Gare back to Bell Heart. Whatever you wish to do to her is permitted if she fights back against anything.

Make sure she does not die.

-Sleorer Vern.

Rainer looked at Ordo.

“Move it,” Ordo said, already walking down to get his mount which was in a small barn near the structure of Frost Bank. “I wanna be back early so we can play LUCK.”

Rainer was joyful, “Yeah. I like the sound o’ that!”

He then turned around to open the door, and Jenny, this time, was looking at him. The bandage of her eye was on the floor, its square shape visible around the crimson socket.

“Help me. Please. My face feels cold,” Jenny said with a sad and overly nightmarish face.

“The fuck this is?! Why did it fall?” Rainer said, shocked by her wicked gaze. A dark red hole where there was no eye somehow felt like it was staring back at him, and tingles ran down his spine.

“Ordo!” He called. But Ordo was already gone.

“Untie me. I’ll put it back on. I beg you,” Jenny said.

“Wait, okay?”

“I can’t. I feel like … I feel like I’m going to die.”

Rainer paused to think. All the overwhelming thoughts flew around in his mind as he saw her terrifying face.

“OKAY!”

He ran in, grabbed the bandage and attempted to put it back on. But it kept sliding over the blood as if it was a bar of soap.

“The adhesive, it’s gone,” Jenny said, her voice breaking at every letter.

“Ugh! I can’t do this!” And he threw the bandage away after it had soaked his hand in her blood.

“What is happening over there?” A rough voice said from outside.

When Rainer walked out to see who it was, he saw the mercenary that they had hired back then. The mercenary whose hair and beard were white. The mercenary whose true name is Bladeor Grim-son.

He was asked to go back to Sleorer Vern on an important matter, and it seemed as though he was leaving but stopped to check on the objective of that contract that he was paid to do two weeks ago: Jenny Da’ Gare.

Rainer smiled and he knew that this man could help. “Her bandage’s worn out and now her eye is out in the open.”

Bladeor ran up in a hurry, and when he saw Jenny, he pursed his lips attentively.

“Jenny! What’s wrong?”

“My eye—”

She stopped. A memory flashed in her vision as she began to recall his face from before. She knew she saw him. She was certain.

“You are the one who captured me?” Jenny said.

Bladeor clapped twice, “Bravo, girl. Even in this condition, you managed to remember me. Remember that hoary, torn outfit I was wearing?”

“Why? Why did you take me here? And where is Zandra?!” Jenny crawled closer with her knees.

“You can leave us,” Bladeor said to Rainer, who happily walked out.

Bladeor got closer to Jenny, and even more close to the point where he could sense the pain in her right eye.

“Listen. I don’t know what nice, old man you took me for, but here is the reality of the situation you were brought into. This man Sleorer Vern who so calls himself the king of Cold’s Wood paid me”—he took the hem of his shirt’s sleeve then started to rip it up—”a considerable amount just so I could get you to him.”

“Thank you. You are a lot nicer—”

“Don’t get your hopes up or I might break every string in your heart. See you later,” he interfered.

“Wait!”

The door was shut, and Jenny’s only friend left. She did not want to see him as one, for he was her kidnapper and the one to separate her from Emerald, her real friend.

Back then

He smiled wide and began to laugh, “Seems you two are very polite. Hard to meet people like those these days. All are either some pussies afraid to talk, and some are just too desperate.”

“What do you want from us? You said you’d let us go—”

“Shush – hush – tush. Let me talk, will you?”

Emerald waited silently and then realized how badly Jenny was looking; she kept opening her mouth and closing her eyes from drowsiness.

“Look, please! She’s not—”

“If you talk again, I will slice open your little throat and then your friend’s. Got that?”

Emerald nodded then pursed her lips.

“Now, back to what I was saying. I brought you here, because I wanted you to tell me what your friend had in her eye”—Emerald shivered—”and whether you’ll give it to me or not.”

Emerald gulped up a puke as she started to feel sick.

“I understand it’s a very cruel decision. And I’m not a cruel person. So, I’ll let it sink in for a second. But then you will have to answer me, and you shall do so very quickly. Is it a glowing emerald gem in your friend’s right eye or not? And if not, then please explain to me what it is.”

“It’s ... it’s …”

Tears burst out of her eyes as she thought of the consequences.

He stared down in frustration, “Jeez. Bloody abysses.”

Emerald whimpered heavily as she tried to let the words slip. Yet, her tongue was just too entangled for her to speak.

“I will give you five seconds. If you don’t speak before they pass, I will kill both of you.”

“N-no! Please don’t do it.”

“One.”

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Two.”

“Please! I can’t just tell you!”

“The clock is ticking. Three!”

“Stop! Don’t!”

“Four!”

Emerald’s jaw froze, and she just let it happen.

“Fi—”

“It’s a glowing emerald gem,” Jenny said.

The man turned and so did Emerald, to look at Jenny and how excruciated she was.

“Yeah. Yeah, haha. That’s all you needed to do.”

Jenny fixed herself up, “Now will you let us go.”

“Oh.” He got closer and glared into Jenny’s eyes. “Sure.”

When Jenny heard that, she attempted to sit up, but he held her down, “But wait! First, let me have it.”

“What?”

“Glowing emeralds cost so damned much that you may lose count over the tens and hundreds. And you thought that I was just going to let you go?” He walked back to what looked like Jenny’s sack and pulled out a knife and then ordered, “Hold her down. And make sure little wispy there doesn’t fly away!”

The bandits that were standing around suddenly jumped in and held Jenny’s arms, the blonde one went ahead to restrain Emerald.

“What are you doing?!” Emerald said.

“I’m pretty sure that whatever’s about to happen is crystal clear from your end,” the man said as he knelt down before Jenny. He held her head tightly and instead of shaking, Jenny just watched closely.

“NO!” Emerald continued to yell.

“Shut her up, Jackie. Otherwise, she’ll make this look too damned gory. Now, now, Jenny. You’re the bad one here aren’t you? All soundless and scary looking. Or maybe it’s just the sedative from the arrow. I’m gonna have to ask you to stop moving, for your sake.”

Now

Rainer opened up the door and saw Jenny lying down. He instantly thought she was dead and ran toward her.

She looked at him.

“What did he do to you?” Rainer said.

“He poured a healing chemical in my eye, and now I’m waiting for it to dry.”

“Well. Well!” Ordo said from behind.

He was in the room checking what Bladeor had left for Jenny on the table.

“A book and a bottle of water. Grape juice! And crackers!” He said. “Who was kind enough to leave these here?”

Jenny’s mood changed, and she bit her tongue over her stupidity.

I COULD’VE HAD THAT! WHY DIDN’T I? She thought with an open eye.

“Could you hand me the bandage over there?” She said, trying to hold in her wrath.

“Here.”

He threw the bandage over her face and she sat up afterward to wear it around her head, eventually tying both ends of the strap.

“Comon! Go and get on the horse,” Ordo said to Jenny and she ran fast.

However, the horse was too tall and she could not get on top.

Ordo came from behind and lifted her up so she could sit on the back, and then he climbed up and the horse started cantering.

“Easy!” She said.

“Shut up and hold tight. If you fall you’ll get injured badly.”

After a while, Jenny saw that they were already going through Tree Path, and after that she would see the beautiful horizon of The Bells.

Bladeor, I hope to meet you again one day. So we can settle this situation that you’ve dragged me into. So that I can understand you better.

Back in Frost Bank, after an hour

“Why did you let her go?” A feline man said to Sleorer, who was composed and playing a guitar.

“She is not worth any trouble,” Sleorer said.

“Did you know that she is a Kuo?”

Sleorer stopped playing and looked at the feline, “What?”

“King, do you know why she lost an eye? And why the right eye specifically?”

Sleorer’s expression turned into a lighting rage. He knew that he was dumber than his own army of dimwits.

“If you’ve read anything about the appearance of Kuos, then you should know how her eye glowed in favor of her power. A power that I know should be the Vonal power. And she will be a great danger to you and to everyone in your army.”

“Go and call them back here. I must end her life. And send a detachment to accompany them in advance.”

“Yes, your majesty. Where did they go?” The feline asked.

“To Bell Heart.”
