Good evening, I apologize for the late critique...
Last night I reviewed this piece before going to bed, which was a first for me, I needed to sleep on it.
The reason for that was the complexity of the simplicity of your technique with this piece.
For instance the fact that unlike the other pieces I reviewed this is the first in black and in white solely, and maybe that is exactly what you wished to express (solitude): it is one character, on expression, one look.
My favourite part was how you changed the colour or tone from black on the white background to white on the black background. Another thing I found fascinating was these are scattered lines to form one concentrated picture (a concentrated story) maybe the expression you wish to show has to do with life's nature, how scattered memories, emotions and events make us who we are (paint the full picture) and that is my understanding of this piece. As always, astounding work. I am of the opinion that you are a brilliant artist.
This piece is captivating... typically anything with a face, the eyes make or break it... and these are powerful eyes. The looseness, yet kind of photographic quality of this drawing is awesome. I feel like I need to write a story to fit with this character. May I? Anyway, beautiful, powerful, stunning, and inspiring. I envy talent like yours... faces are hard, but if done right, soooo amazing. I absolutely love this piece.
Specifically, you're line variation is perfect for the difference between the bold shadows and the delicate shape of the nose, and the light in the eyes. The deep set eyes give the mood, and give a sense of some sort of tense energy hidden right under the surface of his/her skin. Not only have you created a beautiful, power face, but you managed to do so without really giving it a gender... which makes the viewer almost feel as if they could be looking in a mirror and seeing their own inner strength. Wow. I just can't get enough. Definitely a favorite.
I've been absent from dA for a couple months now. I have 3,126 deviantWATCH messages. Favoriting a lot of them. Commenting on a few. This one blows my mind. Especially on the black background. I'd like to use it as the cover for a novel. Maybe the psychological thriller I'm thinking about starting. Something so chilling about that stare. And the chaos of all the lines. Bizarre. I love it. Your art is AMAZING!!!!!!
intense very cat-like stare. Love the expression and line quality. Its raw. (just out of curiosity, was this done without picking up the pencil? I have tried that technique in art class long ago and found it really pushes you to connect with the subject matter)
