I've seen some mixed reviews on this piece, but personally, I love it. It is a simple design in terms of colour palette and subject, but I think that makes this all the more impactful. That hypnotic gaze stares you down as you study the splatters that frame the facial features and the smudges in the background add depth to the shading. The chaos of the lines adds movement to an otherwise uninteresting and static pose. The overall "feel" of this piece is balance; balance between calm and chaotic, black and white, positive and negative space. It is a deceptively simple work that at a glance seems to be a simple, quick portrait, but just any artist could not achieve the careful balance that you have here. Well done!

I respectfully have to disagree with some of the previous critiques.
I believe that your use of charcoal adds a nice sense of depth to the piece, and enhances it rather than detracts from it.
Admittedly, it is not the most original style of working. It is, however, a very successful example of this style.
These type of pictures are often done to hide the poor drawing ability of some of the artists. In your case however (and also with your paintings), your skill and control of the materials shines through.
The quality of line is also very nice and again shows confidence and good technical knowledge.
All in all, I think that the piece has been gracefully executed and is a worthy addition to your excellent gallery.
This is the first time I have ever been moved to write a critique, so I hope that it has been useful for you.

This is not one of your best pieces and I don’t think that it truly shows your potential, don’t get me wrong it is a fantastic piece of art but you have shown use greater art e.g. gestures, big bang in water colour. They are some of your best pieces and they show so much. This piece is so simple and common for you. It could be just me? Due to the fact that I am used to seeing such great work from you, that this just doesn’t do it from me. It is some what different to some of the recent stuff that you have been producing in colour and emotional terms.

This is an original and technically well done portrait.
At first time it look like a sketch made with a small number of line with some graphic software, but when I see the portrait more in deep I understand the real power of this piece made with traditional technique.
The lines so chaotic and full of movement ,and the drops of varnish that make an interesting base noise, give at the watcher a sense of confusion underlined by the flat black of the varnish on the white of the background.
just an observation: the use of charcoal is unnecessary, it obscure the web of lines and don't add nothing at the composition, but this is a just a personal opinion based on my personal taste.
P.S. I'm sorry if there are grammatical errors , my english is not good.

agnes, I love your drawings. they evoke a lot of emotion. They make me think of an artist named Meats Meier. He did some things in 3D many years ago that are awesome.
So I guess that I will just say more please.

Critiquing art is like demanding ducks should bark. Only the self-absorbed aspire to it.

I love the energy, the draftmanship and the atmosphere. The black swaths are emotional, the eyes;piercing. The emotions are dripping ot of this piece. excellenbt!
As soon as I saw this, I knew it was something that was going to be fun to use as a jumping off point for a writing exercise
