This is a bit of an experiment. The character is Superior, and one of the winners of my Christmas Contest.

My problem is I'm not sure where to go once I've gotten to this point.

Well I know what really helps me is having a concept and loose composition idea once I sit down with the intent to draw something.
Maybe its a mood or a pose I really like.

What exactly do you mean by "this point" though?
Do you not know how to proceed with the rest of the piece compositionally or you do know but are unsure of how to proceed with setting the lighting to make sense with what you've got?

I know I used to draw myself into corners a lot by not planning ahead but fleshing out an aspect of the piece anyway, like say a torso or head. Then id be stuck with something Id like but no context.

I meant technically, more or less. I roughed this dude in and kind of sharpened up the edges until he looked presentable, but this is still essentially a speedpaint (maybe 1.5 hours).

To move further, I need to go learn how to add in detail and such without losing the paint look.

Well to keep the paint look while adding some detail is to add detail without adding detail, if you know what I mean.
You basically hint at detail, because adding in intricate stuff destroys that free, painted look; so you add in detail here and there strategically.

Or at least thats how it appears.

Check out some Frank Frazetta, he is the indisputed master of what your talking about.

Will do. I'm also going to search for some tutorials on digital painting and then sacrifice a goat to, I dunno... Minerva, I guess.
