3: The Prattmaster and his Boss by Agahnim 3: The Prattmaster and his Boss by Agahnim
The Prattmaster gets chewed out by his boss for having been defeated by Captain Occam. Just in case anyone isn’t aware of this, his boss is based on a real person. The comic refers to a couple things that have actually happened to him recently, which are described here:…

Incidentally, I know that not all Christians are like this, and this comic is only intended to make fun of those of them who are. If you’re the intelligent and honest sort of Christian, then this comic isn’t about you.

"Maybe nobody ever took a dump until after the flood." I like it. There are some Creationists who say that skunks didn't stink before the fall!

I don't mean to be a jerk now but isn't making a strawman of creationists... kind of putting ourselves on the same level as them? Shouldn't we just use evidence to keep the fanatics at bay?

In terms of representing Hovind in particular (rather than just creationists in general), I don’t think this comic really is a strawman.

In a general sense I agree with you, that it would be kind of hypocritical if things like this were all I had to offer in the creation/evolution debate. But I think it’s important to understand these comics in the context that I was drawing them. I was drawing them to amuse the other people who took my side at a forum where I debated with creationists, while the vast majority of my participation there was providing evidence-based refutations to the creationist arguments. In terms of how I interacted with creationists who just lacked a proper education about science, rather than being willfully ignorant, I was actually one of the more hospitable people there.

Since summer of 2007 I and a few other people have also been working on a book about the evidence for evolution, and being busy with that is one of the reasons why I haven’t drawn any new comics since then. So I agree that evidence-based refutations are more important. But when I was in a situation where I was providing those, and some creationists were willfully ignoring them, I don’t think it was a problem to make fun of the people who were doing that.

I guess it is okay to poke fun at creationists and it isn't like I doubt there is a mountain of evidence that supports evolution. What I do worry about are creationists looking at this sort of comic then ignoring the evidence and claiming this is all the "evolutionists" have...
Agahnim Featured By Owner Feb 26, 2012
Thus far, that doesn’t seem to have been a problem. Most of the places where these comics got exposure, such as the creationism vs. evolution section of Christian Forums and P. Z. Myers’ blog Pharyngula, have been mostly focused on factual refutations of creationism. When I was posting these comics at CF, nobody thought that about me either, since I was already well-known there as one of that forum’s authorities about bird evolution for a long time before I started drawing them.

Hahaha I love this. Hovind is hilarious. Have you watched his videos? Creationists are so wacky and stupid.
Agahnim Featured By Owner Oct 17, 2006
I’ve seen some of his videos, but I find them more irritating and frustrating than actually funny. (Mostly because I know there are people who actually believe him.) My featured deviation story might give you an idea of where my attitude about this comes from, if you’re interested in reading it.

Thanks for the watch, by the way. I’ve added you back—your video game fanart is very impressive.

Love the Truth and Hovind fish.

Great job, probably your funniest yet. The idea of a creationist wanting to go back in time to pluck a Deinonychus is quite hilarious. And I love Hovind's reasoning for why he shouldn't worry about his employees gettiing eaten/disemboweled. How very Hovind-like.

Prattmaster's demotion to pooper-scooper is pretty funny too.

My favorite line: "It is our duty as Christians to lie, cheat and steal in order to serve the lord!" Reminds me of my step-mother. =P

One question: is the reference to a time machine at Princeton an allusion to something specific? I vaguely recall reading something in this vein... something to do with Dr. Gott perhaps? I think he's written a book about time travel or something.
Agahnim Featured By Owner Aug 4, 2006
I wasn’t thinking of anything specific, but if something like this ever were invented, Princeton seems like one of the most likely places for it. I’m also planning on using the time machine in future episodes, so I’d like it to be from an area that I’m familiar with.
