it's one of the most self indulgent things i've ever done, and i'm so proud.
i'll have some at cons, probably.

Yes, I agree! I should use them more too but I don't because it makes me feel like I'm cheating event though I know I'm not because that's the only way to learn! ><

man the feeling that using refs is cheating is like the bIGGEST AND MOST UNFORTUNATE INTERNALIZED LIE EVER EXPERIENCED BY YOUNG ARTISTS it makes me so mad, cause i 100% felt like a cheater for using them for the longest time and i just??? I COULDVE IMPROVED SO MUCH FASTER, GDI

there is a hard line btwn tracing + posting + claiming you drew it, and using refs, which so few young artists seem to realize. refs are the best way to learn, easily, and all good artists use them!! all of them!!!1!! i don't know how we were so misled as beginners......... si gh

Ahh you're so damn right! >< For me, I assume that it's because when I was younger (~10-11) I ONLY copied manga art or followed tutorials step by step; so at some point I realized that I wasn't making art, I was just copying and I said "this is it, from now on I'll only draw from my imagination!" So using references was immediately registered as "cheating" in my head :( Looking back though I'm sure I got my basic art skills by coping works and following tutorials. It was necessary in order to move on...
