Just to See You Smile (3) Team Battles

This… can’t be right. Ochaco’s face was absolutely burning as she stared at what she’d taken out of the suitcase. I said space-themed heroes! A spacesuit! Like Thirteen! “Yo, Ura, what’s taking so long?” The dangle-eared girl (Jiro?) called over at her. “C’mon! Teach is gonna be upset if you’re not out there in time.” “Right, right…” Ura bit her lip, still looking at the costume. Perhaps it stretched, but it still seemed far FAR too small. This sort of thing couldn’t be practical for hero work. It’d be like wearing a swimsuit! People would be staring at her… There was no help for it. Sighing, she started to slip out of her uniform. Is my bra even going to fit in this thing? # It did, and even seemed to hide the outline relatively well, but Ochaco kept tugging different sections, hoping to loosen it up, so it was impossible to be sure. Are they looking? Are they looking? They probably think I’m one of those heroes like Mt Lady or something! Oh my word why didn’t I just say I

In the following weeks, Ocha tried not to think about the UA results. The chances that she would get in the school were low; she’d always known they were low. There was no sense sitting around moping about her chances of getting in. So she spent most of the time filling out applications and writing application essays to other schools. All the different practical exams she was taking were really cutting into her spare time. She felt really good about the Hokkaido Academy exam, which had focused on rescue. They didn’t have a great internship program, but it would be a start. Every so often she found herself thinking about the boy. “…and he just went flying up, and BAM! The whole robot went back! I mean that thing was the size of an office building!” she said, tossing the shovels into the truck. Ryuzu and Takeshi chuckled as they hoisted a bag of cement between them. “Sounds pretty impressive,” Ryuzu said. “You’ll have to point him out to me when this kid gets his big debut. What’d

When Ochaco’s father laughed, it was beautiful. The sagging lines and the dark circles seemed only to highlight the lightened glee of his face, the carefree bliss that for a moment melted away all the bills and work orders and contracts. It was as if he were a whole new person. When Ochaco’s mother smiled, she too transformed. New life sparkled out from her eyes, and she seemed to straighten, become tall. It was a gentle smile, that suddenly made you realize what the whole face was for—it was a face meant for smiling. Only it had so little reason to. When mother and father came home each day, there were no smiles. Droop-eyed and sag-shouldered, they would drop into the folding chairs, on either side of the Walmart-table and work on papers and bills under the glare of the bulb hanging from the ceiling. Sometimes they ate microwaved dinners, sometimes they fixed rice and noodles. Sometimes they ate nothing at all, because Father’s most recent client

Stories and Publishing

I have a story published!  "Lost in Translation," about a hero who finds out they made a mistake translating the prophecy and that he's NOT actually the chosen one!  It's been published by Escape Artists on their podcast Cast of Wonders!  Go listen to it here! Being a writer has been my ultimate ambition for... an insanely long time.  A couple people have even commented on my pictures that I'm a much better writer than artist (which... ouch, but true).  And I'm still a long ways off from that goal, but it feels great to be making some tangible progress toward it.  Some other progress--I'm wrapping up work on the children's picture book on "T

Hoo boy, haven't done one of these for a while.  Three years, maybe? Okay, so the big news I wanted to get out was this: I have a Xanga account.  I've been thinking to get a blog for some years, and enough people I know use Xanga already, so I thought it was time.  I'm a little disappointed--I'd hoped to provide links to my other accounts on there, and I can't find out how--but I think it should be fun.  If you guys are interested you can check it out here: http://afalstein.xanga.com/ The other little tidbit of information is this: I'm not going to be around here so much.  Due to a combination of influences, chief of which is how much time

Okay, this is a completely pointless Journal Entry, but I haven't done much else on DArt for a while, and it's kinda funny, so I might as well put it down. See, my screen name, "Afalstein", is supposed to be a character in Ivanhoe, who's a fat, old thane of noble lineage, reaching back to Harold, the Saxon King.  He is engaged to marry Rowena, the heroine, but towards the end, he realizes she doesn't love him and rather good-naturedly gives her over to Ivanhoe, the hero.  (duh) All well and good.  He's a fun character and he needs more attention.  But the guy's name is actually spelled "Athalstane"  which actually makes more sense, but soun

Hey.
Sir, can you find some way to send me a copy of your War in the North video game fanfiction?

I read a little bit online and I would like to read the rest if it exists..
I'm afraid it doesn't.  I only ever wrote out little scenes like the one you read. It was a fun idea to play around with, but it seemed like it would be more trouble than it was worth.  However, I did publish a summary version of the story, with the different selections that I wrote, incase anyone else wanted to take a stab at it.  Take a look: afalsteinjdkloosterman.wordpre…
