The contest is now closed! Thank you to our four entrants! Anthologies can be found [here]!

Hey everybody! It's been a while since my last contest, so I thought I'd host another one to boost literature community participation. As of now, prize donors are lacking, so please spread the word! (Or help out! I'd really appreciate it.) I'm accepting donations up until the deadline.

If you've been following my recent deviations, I've been updating the poetry collection "The Town that Angered Sky". If you haven't, please take a look [here!] This collection will serve as the premise.

[EDIT] meubanks noted that Deviants who have already been following the collection may have an unfair advantage, and suggested that I write a brief description of the town to ensure an equal playing field. Anyone who still decides to read the collection voluntarily will give themselves a stronger understanding of the town, if one decides to pursue bonus option points option two. A summary follows:

"The Town that Angered Sky" is on the verge of apocalypse. It is a town of few residents, but each resident has their own story. These residents realize that they are somehow bound to this town, and will eventually inevitably perish. And yet those who try to leave vanish into thin air and silver rain. Ever so softly, the town is rising into the air and the ground seemingly with it. As the end lingers, the citizens struggle to find meaning in life and attempt to make the most of their final days on earth. It is said that there will be one survivor.

This poetry collection offers a glimpse into many of the citizens of the town, along with various settings around or part of it. The pieces roughly present themselves in chronological order, and grow darker as the cataclysm creeps forward. This anthology will end on the fifty-second piece.

For this contest, I challenge you to create your own anthology for your own fictional setting. The guidelines are as follows:

:bulletblue: This contest is open for poetry only.
:bulletblue: The collection must be a minimum of five pieces.
:bulletblue: All five pieces should be submitted in one piece.
:bulletblue: These pieces must be new (or at least, not yet submitted to deviantART by this time).
:bulletblue: The setting must be one of your own creation (unless attempting to fulfill bonus requirement two).
:bulletblue: The pieces should be linked through a visible central theme.
:bulletblue: In the artist's comments, please write a paragraph describing your poems, setting, and what inspired you to create said setting.
:bulletblue: Please also include a link to this contest in the artist's comments.

The judging criteria are as follows:

:bulletred: 25 points for creativity.
:bulletred: 25 points for quality of the pieces.
:bulletred: 25 points for visible theme and its effectiveness in the collection as a whole.
:bulletred: 25 points for uniqueness.

You can receive six bonus points for fulfilling each of the following (two points each):

:bulletyellow: Having a total of ten pieces in your poetry collection.
:bulletyellow: Setting your poetry collection in "The Town that Angered Sky".
:bulletyellow: Linking this contest via Journal.

Judges:
1. Aerode
2. KonradoCirilo
3. MozartsNemesis
4. prettyflour
5. marphilhearts

[EDIT] All judging positions have been filled! :la:

After the contest is over, would it be okay to also publish the poems individually?
I feel like each piece should be a separate deviation, but for the sake of the contest I'll compile them and give it in as one thing.
It isn't a problem if I re-publish after the contest, right?

Oh wow you mean to say I wrote 10 poems at 2 AM for no real reason? I think I've fainted. I think I've fainted. I think I've fainted.
Haha anyway, this is fine. Not complaining. Extended deadlines are the best :happybounce:
Hey, is it okay if my entry has more than 10 poems? You didn't mention a maximum number, so I was wondering if I could write more??

Wow haven`t done any poetry b4 but do love creative writing . I`m a bit confused about submitting the 5 pieces as one as, I`m newish to the site, and what system I can use , any advice?  and do the poems have to be inspired by "The Town that Angered Sky" or can I make them up based on inspiration from books  or imagination?

Hey there! Feel free to have your pieces in a Word document and submit it to dA, if that's easiest. A page break between each piece would be excellent.

As for the "Town" inspiration: it's a bonus category. You get two additional points for writing your pieces within this town. It's entirely optional; you can base them off anything you like/imagination.

Good luck! :la:

What denotes a "piece"? Separation of pages, themes, or is there a min-max size per piece?
Reply
:iconaerode:
Aerode Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
They needn't be separated by page, but rather, they ought to have their own title and be distinct from the other pieces in the anthology: they are five different poems. There should be at least one theme evident throughout all five pieces, but feel free to add more! No max-min restrictions either.

Good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Time to get the dust off my poetry skills *cracks knuckles*

Edit: Can the setting be one we used before? I was thinking of revamping a setting I used once for a story I never finished. If not, that's cool too, I'll come up wiht something else :)

Wow! This would be a fun theme to try for NaPoWriMo. I always participate in that. I've bookmarked this contest. If you still need a judge, I'm quite experienced at judging poetry. If not, I'm going to try to participate.

Hey! Thanks for your interest. :la:

I do have one slot left for a judge, but it's entirely your choice! The contest would be fully functional with four judges; if you'd prefer to enter, then by all means, please do so!

If you do decide on judging, please comment/note me as soon as possible. Have a great day.

Just for clarification, do you want the separate pieces submitted as a single deviation, or can they be separate deviations linked in a journal format. Also, must the setting/ theme be fictional, or can we write about a real place?

I'm not sure If I'll enter, because my time for personal writing is limited. I'm asking mostly for clarification. There are some "stranger than fiction" places that could make compelling settings for a poetry collection. I'm thinking of Centralia Pennsylvania (a former coal- town that was destroyed by a mine fire that continues to burn) although I'm only using it as an example, I won't write about it.

MagicalJoey makes a valid point. Those who are more familiar with your work are at an advantage for bonus points, particularly if participants need to glean the sense of the world from your poems, and then still have time to write their own collection from it. Maybe give a brief (1-2 paragraph) primer on the setting to level the playing field? I have no opinion on the subject it's just a suggestion.  :)

I'm not sure if I'll participate, but I'll try to post a journal. Not that it has much promotional value, I don't have many watchers. I'll put a word in to the groups I participate in, if I have your permission to do so.

A single deviation would be lovely. And either/or is fine!

Ooh, I've heard about Centralia before. And I hope to see you enter if everything turns out well enough!

You raise a fair point. I'll get to writing a short summary of the town; anyone who decides to read the pieces will then have their own advantage. Thanks for the tip! :la:

Thank you so much. I'd appreciate any promotion.

Hey there. I'd love to enter this, so I will offer to donate prizes instead of judge :)
For first, second and third I will offer a feature from MagicalJoey , a llama from MagicalJoey (if you want llamas) and for first I will offer a static avatar/lit tag from MagicallyCreative
I will also promote this now, because I think it's an AWESOME, SUPER DOOPER, GREAT idea :D

Oh, and a quick question or three. This 'town that angered sky' is it just a normal town and the poetry describes the inhabitants/settings etc? I've taken a gander in your collection but can't really get much info from it atm. So if fulfilling bonus requirement 2, should I just use my imagination and write about this fictional town? Am I missing something super important?

Ah, thank you so much for the donations and the promotion! :huggle: I really appreciate it.

The town happens to be on the verge of apocalypse, and most of the pieces from the collection show how various people deal with knowing that they're inevitably going to perish soon. Other pieces just show off some of the town's settings! Other than that, feel free to have your imagination take you as far as you want! :la:
