Zokusho: Meek and Moss, ch. 2
The delivery office isn't too far from my apartment building.  If I took a direct route, I could be there within ten minutes; if I used the rooftops, I could probably be there in five.  However, familiarity breeds stagnation, so I always do what I can to make my trip more interesting.  I got a good running start, then sprang up at a street light ahead of me.  The enchantment on my shoes isn't strong enough for me to jump all the way to the top, but it gives a good enough start to let me use the momentum to help me clamber up to the top of the light.  A moving truck rolled under the light, and I figured that if I was gonna take a random route, the best way to do it would be to let somebody else decide where I was going for a minute, so I jumped down before it got too far away and hit the top of the truck in a roll so I didn't hurt myself.
I got up into a crouching position near the edge of the boxy part of the truck, keeping my hand at t

It all started like any other day.  I was yanked out of a peaceful sleep by the 5:15 train screaming past my window.  I buried my head under my pillow until my apartment stopped shaking.  Once it did, I let out a sigh as I debated whether or not I could just lie there a little longer, comforted by the soft embrace of my bed and blankets.  As much as I wanted to, I couldn't stay.  The next train would be coming by soon, and there wasn't anything I could do to sleep through that noise.  I sat up and stretched, then straightened out the oversized t-shirt I wore to bed most nights as I absentmindedly looked out the window.
It was my city, Azure Coast—what I could see of it, anyway, considering how much of the view from my window was obscured by the tracks from the local el-train.  I'd been living here pretty much as long as I could remember.  Azure Coast is a fairly small city in Terra Aquatos, about half

Lucas woke up in a hospital bed, covered in bandages and wearing a cast on his arm.  He winced with pain as he looked over to the side to see Simon sitting by the window.  He had a couple of bandages on his face, but he somehow found a way to make it look good.
"Oh hey, look who's up!"  Simon said as he noticed Lucas looking around.  "How you feeling, buddy?"
" I got the crap beaten out of me by a life force sucking she-devil.  How about you?"  Lucas asked.
"Well, not great, but considering death was a very real possibility for a while there, I'm calling it a net gain,"  Simon said with a smile and a shrug.
"How long was I out?"
"A little more than a day, I guess."
"Anything interesting happen after I blacked out?"
"Um, let me see..."  Simon said as he looked up at the ceiling.  "Mac blew Alice's head off..."
"Yeah, I remember that part," Lucas said, moving his hand around in a "keep going"

Meanwhile, across the hall, Stephanie was in her room, looking through some of the boxes that she still hadn't unpacked in the corner of her room.  It took her quite a while, but eventually she found a simple white box tucked away behind some of her enchanting supplies.  She remembered when her father had given it to her just before she left for college, and had explained to her that it was a family heirloom that had been passed down through their family for generations, from artificer to artificer.  She unhooked the simple silver clasp at the front of the box and opened it up to reveal a small silver ring embedded into a soft pillow that took up most of the inside of the box.  She took the ring and tried to put it around her finger, but since it was sized for a man's hand, it didn't fit any of her fingers.  She thought for a moment, then reached into her pocket to retrieve Simon's silver knot necklace that he had given her earlier that

Lucas was back at his dorm room, lazily sprawled across his beanbag chair, reading a comic book.  Just as he turned the page to see whether the robot or the zombie had won the clash, he heard a knock at his door.  Lucas tossed the book onto his desk as he stood up, then walked over to the door and opened it up to see Stephanie, Kitty, and Professor Mackenzie standing there.
"Hey, Kitty!"  Lucas greeted enthusiastically.  It took him a moment to see that the others were there as well.  "So, what's going on?  I didn't see you at the arcade for long after you showed up, Professor..."  he asked.
"Do you know where Simon is?"  Professor Mackenzie asked, getting straight to the point.
"No, haven't seen him since we closed the arcade down for the day,"  Lucas explained.
"You closed the arcade?"  Kitty asked.
"Yeah, nobody could get hold of Trent, and we couldn't hang around all day, so we just

"I swear to the gods, one of these days we're going to run into somebody else who can see us,"  Joseph muttered.
"Joseph—not now.  You've had centuries to get used to the idea of normal people not seeing you, I don't need to hear you complaining about it at every turn,"  Kitty snapped back.
"Who are you talking to?!"  Stephanie asked, more than a little worried for Kitty's sanity.  Kitty took a deep breath, knowing that her explanation was going to take some time.
"Okay, from the top:  you remember reading about the Fiend Wars back in high school Interplanar History?"  Kitty asked.
"Y...yeah.  Some researchers were trying to make a better portal between worlds, and they ripped a really big hole in the space-time continuum,"  Stephanie recalled.
"Right.  Before they could get the rift to the astral plane sealed up, a lot of really nasty stuff managed to get through,"  Kitty

After a quick trip across town, Kitty and Stephanie arrived at Kitty's apartment.  Even though no one was around, Kitty continued to look around cautiously, as she had been since they had left Trent's apartment building.
"Kitty?"  Stephanie said timidly, trying to get her attention.  Kitty turned to face her, but she didn't say anything.  Stephanie took a deep breath, and tried to collect herself.  "I think I've been more than patient enough.  What is going on around here?"
"It wasn't supposed to be like this..."  Kitty muttered to herself, rubbing at her temple with her index and middle fingers, like she was getting a headache.
"What wasn't supposed to be like what, Kitty?"  Stephanie asked, growing more frustrated.  "All I know right now is that Trent is dead, you were at least close by to it, and now you've dragged me back to your place, acting as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chai

Lucas sat at Stephanie's desk, absent-mindedly looking at his PDA while Stephanie angrily paced back and forth across the small room.
"Seriously, Steph—are you gonna be all right?"  Lucas asked, more than a little worried.  Stephanie stopped, and took a deep breath before speaking.
"...yeah.  It's just...she's just like the girls that gave me such a hard time back in high school, only worse.  I was kind of hoping that college would be at least a little different..."  she said.
"Well, I hate to break it to you, but there's always going to be some people that never grow out of that high school phase.  It's not going to help any to dwell on it, though,"  Lucas said.  "Maybe there's something else you can focus on.  Did you have any plans for today?"
"I was going to meet Trent a little bit later on...he said we could play a few games at the arcade and then get some dinner,"  Stephanie s

After he was done with his cold shower, Lucas got dressed and walked back into Stephanie's room, still drying his hair with the towel.
"So...what's going on?"  Stephanie asked, confused.
"Well, Simon's girlfriend just came on to me..."  Lucas explained.  Stephanie's eyes widened.
"Are you sure?  I mean, maybe you just misunderstood..."  she started.
"She was waiting in my room, wearing lingerie that might as well have been painted on,"  Lucas said as he tossed the towel back into the bathroom.
"Okay, well, maybe she was waiting for Simon,"  Stephanie reasoned.
"...and then she nearly pinned me against my bed as she ran her hands all over my chest..."  Lucas said as he sat down.  Stephanie blushed.  "...yeah.  Not a lot of room for misinterpretation there."
"So what are you going to do now?"  Stephanie asked.  Lucas sighed.
"I'm gonna call Simon,"

After spending most of the morning tinkering with some of his projects in the robotics lab, Lucas returned to the dorm to spend the rest of his Saturday the way the gods intended:  playing video games and reading comic books.  As he reached into his pocket to retrieve his key, he grabbed the doorknob and noticed that the door was unlocked.  Lucas raised an eyebrow.
"Guess Simon wasn't as serious about working today as he said..."  he said to himself as he opened the door.  "Hey Simon, I thought you were gonna go see Doc Thomas..."  Lucas stopped mid-sentence when he realized that it wasn't Simon who was already in the room, but Alice, leaning seductively against the bed.  Lucas let out a high-pitched yelp of surprise and clapped a hand over his eyes as he stepped out into the hallway and shut the door.  He leaned against the wall and took a few deep breaths, trying to compose himself.
"Okay, okay,

The next morning, Lucas woke up to the screeching of his alarm clock.  He slapped his hand down onto the snooze button, and slowly crawled out of bed to see Simon already awake and dressed, sitting at his desk and going over the leather-bound notepad he used as a spellbook enthusiastically.  Lucas stared bleary-eyed at the scene before him, trying to process what was going on.
"Did I oversleep?"  he asked.
"No, you didn't—I just got up a little early,"  Simon replied, standing up as he scribbled a few more notes into his spellbook.  "You feel like getting some breakfast at the cafeteria?"
"I'm sorry, did you say breakfast?"  Lucas asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"Simon, I've known you for years, and I've never seen you conscious at breakfast time.  For the gods' sake, even when you pull an all-nighter, you make it a point to take a nap around this time," Lucas said.
"Eh, there's a first time for everything..."  Si

Lucas slowly made his way up the stairs to his dorm, and stopped as he made it to his room.  Just as he was reaching to open the door, it opened up from the other side, giving Lucas just a brief moment to step out of the way.  On the other side of the door was Alice—her hair was a mess, and her clothes were wrinkled as though they had been crumpled up on the floor for a while.  She looked at Lucas, raising an eyebrow.
"You have some business here?"  she asked.
"This is my dorm room,"  Lucas said, a little confused.
"Oh, so you're the roommate Simon was talking about..."  Alice said.
"That's right—Lucas Wesley,"  Lucas introduced himself, offering his hand for a shake, which Alice was clearly not interested in.
"Alice,"  Alice replied, looking Lucas over.  "...I kind of figured you'd look a bit more...child-like."
"Simon used the word 'precocious' to describe me, didn't he?"  Lu

Later that day, Kitty arrived outside the dormitory, where Lucas and Simon were waiting for her.
"Hey guys, you been waiting long?"  she asked.
"Nah, we just got here,"  Simon said.  "So, you ready to go?"
"Sure,"  Kitty said as they started walking.  "So what were you guys talking about before I got here?"
"Well, I was explaining to him why the ninjas in Anachronox are never going to beat the robots or the cowboys..."  Lucas started.
"Yes, but I doubt that Kitty's interested in talking about that,"  Simon interrupted.
"Well actually..."  Kitty said before getting cut off by Simon.
"Really, this day out's about us getting to know you a little better.  What are you doing at this college, what are your dreams, where do you see yourself in five years?"  Simon asked.
"Is this a job interview?"  Kitty asked.
"No, I just think that it's a little unbalanced for you to know so much abo

The next day, Kitty came through the door of her apartment, holding her cell phone against her ear.
"Yeah, that sounds like fun.  I have to finish a few things before I can get away, but I'll call you when I'm headed towards the dorms, okay?"  she said as she silently waved to Professor Mackenzie, who was in the kitchen, reading History of the Fiend Wars, Volume Eight.  "Okay, great.  I'll see you then, Lucas."  Kitty closed the phone and put it back into her pocket.  Mackenzie noticed the smile on her face.
"So, he's taking you out again tonight?"  he asked, looking up from his book.
"Yeah.  He wanted me to go with his roommate to this arcade in town,"  Kitty explained as she dropped her backpack by the door and walked into the kitchen.
"I thought you already had plans for tonight,"  Mackenzie said.

Lucas came back to his dorm room to see Simon sprawled across a chair, watching television.
"Hey man,"  Simon greeted without turning around.  "Did you hear another student died last night?"
"How's that?"  Lucas asked.
"Another sudden, fatal case of anemia, just like the guy at the party,"  Simon explained.
"What do they think is going on?"  Lucas asked.
"No word from anybody with any authority,"  Simon said as he wheeled his chair over to his desk and pointed at his computer.  "...but it's really caught the attention of the tinfoil hat crowd in the school forums."
"Huh...I figured the body count would have to hit double digits before they started throwing out the zombie virus theory..."  Lucas said after glancing at the screen for a moment.
"Well, ever since the scare with the Rage virus during freshman year, they don't want to miss out on the ground floor of any future disasters,"  Simon joked a

"Kitty, would you give us a moment?  I'd like to talk to Mr. Wesley,"  Professor Mackenzie said.
"Daddy..."  Kitty rolled her eyes.
"I just want to get to know him a little better.  It'll only be a moment,"  he said as he stepped aside and gestured Kitty through the front door.  As the door shut, the professor looked Lucas over, as though he were mentally evaluating him.
"I, uh...didn't know you had a daughter,"  Lucas said, slightly unsettled by the silence.
"Oh, you didn't notice she has my eyes?"  Professor Mackenzie asked.  Lucas was reasonably certain this was a joke, but it had been delivered in such a deadpan way that he was afraid to laugh even a little.  "...I knew her parents.  They passed away shortly after she was born, so I took it upon myself to raise her."
"I see,"  Lucas said, shuffling around nervously.
"So, you found her."
