CONTEST IS OPEN
"IN THE EMBRACE OF WINTER" :bigthumb274265044: Each season brings a different experiences and emotions, different atmosphere, a different colour pallette. Winter is a time for reflection and rest, a cycle of life-death-rebirth,   the inward journey, embracing darkness and silence. Winter days are short, with long nights. The cold weather can make us sad and lethargic. The season offers a sense of calmness and makes us feel peaceful. The most romantic time of the year? A snowy, frosty, cold world or rain and endless grey skies can be beautiful but some people find that they become seasonally depressed as they receive less light in winte

12.1.2014: Contest is now closed Thank you for all the wonderful entries!!! 11.1.2014: Only today left! Get your entries in! Edit 24.11.13: Updated prizes + put the date in proper format; updated rules - one line added: "Entries that keep too closely to the inspirational source (i.e. the ones that basically copy the image by just switching the stock) will be rejected." I have decided to wait a little longer before adding any judges so you are not limited by maybe wanting to avoid certain people as inspirational sources ;) Edit 4.12.13: Please, please, please, read the rules before you start! I hate to decline work on the grounds of form

Welcome to the latest community competition for Photomanipulation!

This is the official kick-off blog for the latest, greatest EXTREME PHOTOMANIPULATION CONTEST here on dA! The contest is backed by communityrelations with HUGE prizes and hosted by CRPhotomanipulation. This journal describes the rules for the contest. Please read it carefully.

What we mean by "Extreme" photomanipulation

You should reach beyond your comfort zone and create a deviation that is bold, unique, and better than you thought you could create. Try something new. Break the mold. You've got this!

We have HUGE prizes. So, we are expecting HUGE results.

Theme: Rebirth and Renewal

Our theme, Rebirth and Renewal, was suggested by administrators of CRPhotomanipulation. You are hereby challenged to create a photomanipulation that shows rebirth and/or renewal. For example, it could show a transformation of sorts, being brought to life, or perhaps shedding the old to reveal something fresh and beautiful (or ugly!) beneath. Perhaps your transformation is into death, and you can show that. You should interpret what being reborn or renewed means to YOU and then depict it in a photomanipulation.

Time frame

The contest will be open for 2.5 months.

Contest opens: 15 January 2013
Contest closes: 1 April 2013, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (visit www.timeanddate.com to find out what time that is for you)

The Rules

Here are the rules in detail:

:bulletpink: Your entry MUST be a PHOTOMANIPULATION. That means it involves 2 or more photographic elements that have been combined to create something new. It is absolutely fine to have photomanipulations that have been painted over (and thus may technically be Mixed Media). SINGLE photographs that have ONLY been brushed or textured will not qualify. There must be at least 2 photographic elements. If you are in doubt, please check with us!

:bulletpink: No entries created before January 15, 2013 will be accepted. Entries must be new and specifically created for this competition.

:bulletpink: Contest closes at 11:59 PM PST on April 1st. No late entries will be accepted.

:bulletpink: *ALL* stock must be credited, including brushes. All stock must be from legitimate sources. If you don't know where the stock that was used to create your premade background came from, don't use it. If you don't know where the cutout stock came from, don't use it. We will decline all entries with questionable stock. If you don't know, ask. Direct links are NOT necessary, but they are always appreciated. See the stock reminder here.

:bulletpink: Collaborations are OK as long as all collaborators are credited, but if a prize is won, that prize will be split evenly among collaborators. If you are submitting a collaboration, you only need to submit the work once.

:bulletpink: You may enter up to TWO deviations, but you can only win once.

:bulletpink: Please include a statement in your artist's comments that you have created the deviation for the Rebirth and Renewal Photomanipulation Competition. Please link to this blog.

:bulletpink: There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please carefully read the submission requirements below.

How do I submit?

There are three folders in CRPhotomanipulation that are open for submission: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED. You should choose which level you feel is most appropriate for your art and submit to that folder. There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please read below to find out which one is best for your work! If you have questions, please ask.

Here is the rubric and rules for deciding where to submit:

BEGINNING ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletgreen: Cutting out stock properly :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Arranging pieces to tell a story (effective composition) :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Must use at least 2 tutorials (and cite them in artist's comments). They can be on or off of dA. :bulletgreen:

INTERMEDIATE ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletblue: Composition :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Color theory :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Light and shadow :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Proportions :bulletblue:

ADVANCED ARTISTS must demonstrate mastery of:

:bulletpurple: Light and shadow :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Composition :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Blending (you can't tell it is made from different images) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Perspective :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Flair (the "wow!" factor) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Must have at least one aspect that either (1) has a sense of movement, OR (2) defies the law(s) of physics (for example: defying gravity, energy being created or destroyed, etc.). :bulletpurple:

ALL ENTRIES will also be judged based on:

:bulletpink: Impact
:bulletpink: Storytelling (Is your image just a pretty picture, or does it tell a story?)
:bulletpink: Creative interpretation of theme
:bulletpink: Originality
:bulletpink: Exceeding expectations (Is this a stand-out piece from your gallery?)

Submissions require one vote for approval. This is so that we can make sure they meet the contest rules; we are not screening for quality, etc.

To be clear, the admins of CRPhotomanipulation will NOT move your deviation or choose the category to which it is submitted. That is entirely up to the artist. We reserve the right to suggest that a piece of art be submitted to a higher category-- for example, an advanced artist should not submit to the beginner category.

Hey
It says I can enter twice, but when I try to submit my piece to the Intermediate folder, it tells me I've exceeded my submission limit of 2 deviations in 365 days =(

Can you note me the deviation? It must mean you had tried to enter once and had it declined. I'll be glad to add it for you. :)

Hello! I'm really sorry to bother you, but the more I work on my piece, the more I become concerned. I am no longer sure if I am a beginner or an intermediate manipulator. What should I do?

use your best guess. If you use tutorials, be sure to cite them if you go in the beginner category; that category requires 2 tutorials. Look at the entries in both categories and think about where yours best fits. :)

Wow, this looks like fun! I've been practising a bit of photo manipulation recently, so the timing is perfect! I might give this a go! :la:

But, how do I let you know that I've submitted my work?
