NO. 4. –
Chapter 1:
The rain came without warning. One moment the sky was a hazy summer blue, the next a curtain of silver swept across the park, turning the distant treeline into a watercolour blur. I’d been walking for twenty minutes, maybe more, just letting my boots find the quiet paths. The big oak stood alone on a low rise, its canopy spreading like a dark green umbrella. By the time I reached it, my t-shirt was plastered to my back.
I pressed my shoulder blades against the bark, catching my breath. The drumming on the leaves overhead became a steady roar. Through the shifting sheets of rain, a figure emerged. A person walking directly toward the tree. The shape resolved into a woman, and my pulse did something clumsy.
She wore a long black PVC raincoat, so glossy it seemed to gather what little light the storm allowed. The coat reached almost to her ankles, gleaming with every stride, and beneath it I glimpsed tall boots with the same liquid shine. A yellow sou’wester hat
