Feels Like Frostbite by adverbial-spectra Feels Like Frostbite by adverbial-spectra
Hey you! Feel free to download this to your computer, but don't use it anywhere on the internet without my permission, or you'll have me, my watchers, and my online buds to deal with. Don't be an art thief!

Meet Julio, =Vasida's gorgeous black sabino stallion character who is in the process of discovering that not only is he capable of love, but he found it and lost it already. Woe betide anyone who crosses his path while he's trying to figure himself out!

This is a long overdue commission. Not that I put due dates on anything, because that would suck, but thanks Kae for being so patient! I really appreciate that anyone would commission my work, and I try to take my time so I don't force anything and get sloppy. I hope it's worth the wait!

So, you want technical rambles, eh? See that belly? It was black before. Yeah, turning near-true black to white is A NIGHTMARE. And if you know me, you know I manipulate photos rather than paint things when at all possible. Painting it in would've just turned out flat and lifeless. So that part took forever. Sabino-ifying the markings was fun though, once I determined that, while not as easy as I expected, it was entirely possible. Oh yeah, and I started off with a tall background with a single mountain, but then I figured I could do better and LO AND BEHOLD I had this sucker sitting in my stock folder just begging to be cloned into usability. It started off as just playing around, and then I decided I liked this version more than the original. I still have the original if =Vasida wants it, since she knows what it looks like from the WIPs. But this way I can make myself (and her) wallpaper of this baby, so woohoo!

The stock horse wasn't quite the quality I'm used to, but that didn't stop me from jumping on an awesome pose. I worked some magic, and after doing battle with a lot of colour noise I'm glad I went with this choice.

Check out that windy hair! Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Too bad most of the tail got covered up, but you get a good view of the front feathering cause I couldn't bear to (or justify) covering it with snow. Yay windiness!

Specific comments are especially loved. I respond to all comments.

Drawing highlights and shadows overtop (on separate layers), then blurring them and setting them to blending modes really helps. :D

You're welcome. :huggle: And definitely, I always try so many different manes/tails on a single manipulation, seems like I can never get any of them right. :tantrum:

The composition of this piece... the expression on the horse's face... the recolor... but mostly the expression and emotion. Eep. Stun me breathless, my dear. :o

Aww, thank you! I find that working towards a "feel" is easier than conforming to lots of little specifics. This guy wasn't hard to understand cause I could just stalk his posts. The quote and title just magically came to me along the way! :D

Thank you, I really appreciate it! Settling on a colour scheme can be a pain with snow scenes, but somehow the background didn't put up too much fuss (after all the cloning out of skiers and power lines, that is!). :D

I don't know where I can PM you, so I will ask here: I had made a character for the forum, though I hadn't joined.

He's an old donkey who owns a traveling wagon shop. Is this allowed?

If I can't have a donkey what kind of horse or pony would be best suited?

If he's not allowed to be a shopkeeper what should he be?

Is there a monetary system? If not, can the horses trade? What would there be to trade?

There's the dA Note system, and PMs on The Secret to reach me privately. :D

There are no shops, and not really any items that would be sold in shops, as TS is semi-realistic (they act like horses except for the whole talking bit). You may want to have a look around the site to get a better idea of the atmosphere.

If I were to get your permission what would be the next best thing? He's just about the oldest thing out there and is just as smart and wise. He's very crotchety and mean and will only dispense his wisdom to those he deems worthy.

I don't know, but you're welcome to send me your ideas via a more private system. I'd rather keep this page about the actual piece itself, which this conversation has nothing to do with. :XD:

Thanks! It's funny, first I removed the stock horse's white markings, then I added completely different ones! It's been quite the transformation; it's always fun to look back and see how different the result is from the original. :D

I'm always around, I'm just super-slow at making art now! Life never seems to get less busy.
