I am a big fan.  I hope to be able to draw like you someday!  This is really nice to see your process.

Very well done. I like. I just have 1 question. I see a lot of artists start out with greys and stuff as the bass. Why? I'm trying to learn this style and just trying to figure out what does starting out with grey help?

Starting with grey color is to help you to focus checking the light and shadow, whether is it smooth and harmony enough, or need some minor value changes in between. Unless when artist is mature enough to use color straight away, or their style is going to be really colourful, or they just comfortable to do in that way. It is preference sometime.

Hope I did answer you. :)

So do you go over the grey with color then? Have it kind of transparent or something? So the grey bleeds through to soften the color? I've been trying to do it but man. I feel like a 4 yr old with a marker and having at it.

I used Photoshop layer with "color", try to be patient to get until the right color, then start to touch up all the minor color changes and details (because greyscale would be 100% perfect color, unless greyish is the style you want)
