IBUKI issue3 alt-cover pencils

Behold, my pencils for the alternate cover I did for issue #3 of Udon's STREET FIGHTER LEGENDS: IBUKI #3, due to hit the shelves of your Local Comics Store on June 30, 2010. The book itself features words by :iconzubby:, pretty pictures by :iconomar-dogan:.

As I have little taste for inking nowadays (not that I ever did, even back in the day), it was decided to have the piece colored directly from my pencils, which :iconfrozenlilacs: did quite nicely; I'll post that final version shortly.

This version admittedly looks a fair bit more static and less dynamic than the original rough, which you can see here (where it lurks, well-hidden, in the "scraps" section of my gallery):

The fact that I left the shurikens' trails off (to better be depicted as transparent streaks and highlight blurs in the coloring stage) and depicted the projectiles as static objects certainly doesn't add much kineticism, it's true; then again, my attempts to depict motion-blurred objects with smearing and streaking line art have often been at odds with colorists' work, so what the heck.

Furthermore, the original rough also has a bit more energy than the pencils because I had to shift Ibuki's figure to a more upright orientation on the final illo to keep her clear of the various logos and such. The rough has a bit better diagonal flow, IMHO, even if that flow reads right-to-left, which is normally quite the bugaboo for me (as I spend almost all of my time doing sequential art, which requires left-to-right flow).

Have to say, I considered adding quite a few more bizarrely shaped shuriken to the piece, as I'd dug up plenty of colorful ninjutsu-tool reference for a Ninjette fight scene that wound up getting cut from EMPOWERED volume six... Oh, well.

Speaking of (my original character) Ninjette, I was vaguely discomfited to realize that she has a hairstyle broadly similar to that of fellow kunoichi Ibuki:

I was vaguely aware of Ibuki from her appearances in the Capcom art books (though I'd never drawn the character before this cover), but I can attest that Ninjette's hair design is only coincidentally similar; if anything, her hairstyle was prolly influenced by that of Jamadagni from my long-ago TITANS: SCISSORS, PAPER, STONE one-shot for DC (which in turn was prolly influenced by something else, in all likelihood).

Heck, if I had the time (I don't, sadly), I'd prolly do a sketch of Ninjette PLAYING Ibuki as a fight-game character, which would be rather recursively amusing; then again, it's been established in EMPOWERED that she's much better at actual, real-life ninjutsu than video-game ninjutsu...

She fit into your style pretty well if you ask me. I'd be happy to see more of the capcom girls fall into your lap for pictures in the future.

I wouldn't worry too much about the copy in hair design. That looks been flying around with martial arts anime women for over a decade now. lol

lol, well, she could always cosplay ibuki in a future issue... which would allow you to fit in that concept AND feel like you're working... assuming anyone really knows ibuki. it's not like she's as famous as chun li or cammy i guess. :P

Having read both Ibuki and all of your Empi books, Ninjette is by far the better ninja and cuter

Ninjette is my favorite character, I love her hair, face, outfit, and back story. I would love to see a lot more of her in the comic, so now I will restlessly await vol. 7 before I even have vol. 6.

Oh, and the Ibuki cover is very nice too. Thanks for the cute filled fun of your artwork.
