'96 'Leather-jacket Rei Ayanami' sketch by AdamWarren '96 'Leather-jacket Rei Ayanami' sketch by AdamWarren
As the latest part of my effort to post a new (to you) piece every (week)day, here's another very old sketch of Evangelion's iconic Rei Ayanami, drawn circa '96 for inclusion in a long-ago dojinshi "Sketchbook" of mine put together by very kind friend of mine. You can see a previous Rei sketch here: [link]

This illo is referenced from a long-ago photo shoot I did with the verra same friend; if you look through my gallery, you can see plenty of other examples using this ref material. Kinda random to see Rei wearing the outfit, but what the heck.

In unrelated news, for folks who don't read my Journal entries: Post a comment here (identifying your favorite Empverse character) to win a free copy of the upcoming very big, very expensive Empowered Deluxe Edition Vol. 1: [link]

The preceding contest, alas, is only open to folks in the US and Canada, so I've set up an alternate prize (of sorts) for Empowered readers from around the globe: [link]

Adam, this is a nice bit of work, contrasting the rather calm and collected Rei, with a biker jacket.

Dunno if the contest is still open, but I'm partial to Ninjette. Nothing like the competent ninja sidekick to brighten a girl's day.

I love the way you create your leather texture. I remember seeing some pencils that you did in Wizard a few years back, and the way you rendered your leather jackets blew me away. I'll repeat what many people have said in this thread already, your art made me very aware of texture and drapery in art. Thanks for the inspiration!

The other one use to hang on my wall but i've never seen this one. Are you going to post some of your Gen13 sketches? There's a Roxy sketch that really like. Best Emp Character has to be Ninjette. The biggest reason is that she reminds me of a girl I once knew.

Well, right off the bat, Adam, I love me some Ninjette. Raven-haired ninja girl awesoeness.

About the pic: I LOOOOVE your art from this era, where you seemed to have been channeling Kenichi Sonoda. The era that gave us "Sim Hell", "Grand Mal", and "Fatal But Not Serious"!!! It was very cutesy and fun. And you used to draw noses back then. Not just nostrils. Actual noses!

I do still love your new stuff. As far as I'm concerned, you're the only American artist who is doing manga-inspired art CORRECTLY. Everyone else tries to do spiky hair and really awkward angular body types. Everything you do is still soft and curvy. Please, never let that go.

Rei Ayanami. That brings back memories.

As for the contest thing. My favourite character in Empowered is actually Empowered herself Elisa Megan Powers. (What!? 'The main title character' you ask? Preposterous!) I like her innocence. Her optimism, her low self esteem. It's very relate-able, Particularly those last two points. It's the reason I got into the series in a big way. I recognized your art from reading old Wizard magazines with Dirty Pair and Gen 13 (or at least the magical girl spin off) But I had never actually found any of your stuff in any of the comic stores I visited so I never got the chance to check it out. I finally saw Empowered out of the blue and was like "Whoa! I recognize that art! It reminded me of how I never had the chance to read any of those old comics and I picked up the first book on a whim. Loved everything about it.

Thugboy, The super homies, the tongue in cheek humor, the adult orientedness of it (without becoming pornographic) The caged demongoat is a highlight. (would love to actually have a belt like that that glows and spouts his lines. how cool of a prop would that be? (check out Volpin Props, they might actually get on that if you heckle them a bit) Really there's not much I can say I dislike about the series... I'm trying to think of something but it's completely eluding me.

I think I've raved enough on the matter.

Empowered is my favourite character. You can send me prizes now? :D

Keep up the stellar work anyway. Looking forward to big book #7.
