Urban Centaur by AdamTLS Urban Centaur by AdamTLS
So, yeah... Only a year and a half(ish) late. This started out as a concept piece for a contest around having a Centaur in an urban setting.

I kind of went overboard, got busy, got engaged, came back, put it down, came back, etc. Last night I sat down to just finish it and this is where it ended up.

Technical Junk:
The project was started 9/15/2011.
The main scene was saved in 25 revisions.
There were 61 sub-files created that were merged to create the main scene.
There were 42 in-progress renders saved.
The final render took approximately 3 hours on my machine.
At peak, my machine used ~22GB of RAM to render this scene. It was rendered as a SINGLE pass with all items in the scene at the same time.
There are ~26M verts in the scene.
There are 26 Gen4/Genesis figures in the scene.
3 milcat
3 mildog
4 rats
5 crows
4 chickens
1 milhorse
Plants, Buildings, clothes, etc. beyond counting ;)

Really, *really* like the idea of a centaur going to the get his shoes checked.

Awesome, render.

This is amazing! I would not even have considered it possible to have that many verts in one scene!
All the details are very inspiring! Absolutely like the idea how the Centaur is getting a hoof "upgrade"!

Thank you! About 1/3 of the polys are just the grass! LOL! I used pure poly grass (no transmaps) and no instancing. :)

Amazing piece, and odd as this might sound - I love the way your grass looks. I can never get it to look quite that good.

Thanks! I struggled with the grass. Did a bunch of instancing at first, but that didn't work out well because you can't independently DFORM (Magnet) the instances. In the end it all ended up just being full poly grass. I have some ideas to make it even better next time though... (Mainly even still more DFORMS). :D

Plants in general are one of the things that frustrate me.
I keep looking for ways to make them look better, so seeing
images like yours gives me hope. :D Do you mind me asking
what grass you used?

Grass One by Predatron. One of the few Grass products that doesn't use transmaps.

Oh thanks! Onto my wishlist it goes LOL Yeah, I don't mind transmaps, but when I can use something that doesn't use them I jump on it - if only because I've had problems with images having too many of them before. :D

Very nice!

Her center of weight looks a bit off by the way, it seems as if she's going to fall over if the smith releases her foreleg :XD:

Hehe, yeah I'd thought of that myself too. I figured I'd be curious if someone was messing around with my feet and I'd want to see, so she would too. ^_^;;

That is epic! No wonder I hadn't seen anything from you for a while, between your busy life and this beast of a render I completely get it!

Curious, what sort of rig does one need to pump out such a huge render of detailed quality in such a low time? I suspect mine would simply whimper and die if I asked it to do this!

Thanks so much!

I'm pretty proud of this render. I could've kept going I had the room to do (and DAZ Studio would've taken it too) but I was just ready to be done. :)

I have an i7-3960X based system overclocked to 4.2GHz, liquid cooled with 64GB of RAM and an nVidia GeForce GTX590 GPU.

This system is actually (moderately) old, but when I built it (November 2011) it was the absolute king of the hill. The i7-3960X is still about the 9th fastest CPU there is... [link]

Ah, thought it may be something enviable like that!

Did you use UE lighting in this? or was it a simpler (and less system hungry) setup?

UE2, three distant lights, about 6 uberpoints. :)

Rendered in DS4.6 which is the fastest yet of the DS4 line for rendering to boot.

Yeah 4.6 is AMAZINGLY fast. I had to rerender a few times just to check it wasn't a fluke! Do you get the pixel filter reset message also?

Can't say I've seen it. Are you setting your pixel filter to something other than a whole number?

No. Hmmm, makes me wonder. Everything I found through a google search referred to a common problem in the version of the 3Delight engine. Although there was nothing specific related to Daz 4.6. Renders seem to come out fine, it just forces it to box filter rather than sinc which it was in. I haven't noticed an actual difference though.

As a test, is there any chance I could get your render settings to check. (It may be related to my architecture or hardware)

I built preset scripts for all my render settings. You can find them here; [link]
