No stars, no planets, no nebulae, no space ships that's right just a giant dragon with giant guns and a few poor marines fighting it. Anyway this was inspired from many places, first being me wanting to try something new, the original image that started this piece was called "The Orthene T.REX" by Per Haagensen which is a giant T-REX armed with modern guns killing bugs, great stuff, so I thought I'd combine it with an old dragon design I came up with during A-Level art. Its my first attempt at a full digital painting, not a matte painting like my other non space related art. The infantry were painted by hand using custom brushes and looking at photos as a reference. The whole scene was inspired by the new transformers 2 trailer which was just a huge explosion fest. Anyway let me know what you think.

Enjoy

Superb job! The entire picture really conveys the feeling of that tired military corps and their seemingly fruitless efforts to bring down a mythical being that just so happens to be fused with a butload of guns. WOW! That's a mouthful!

Plot aside, your painting skills are great. The reflection of light on the helmet in the bottom left looks far from legit (in the good direction <img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/r/r…" width="15" height="15" alt="=P" title="=P (Razz)" />)

Anyhow, now for the constructive critique: I swear I've seen something like this before, just a dragon instead of a crazy dinosaur thing.

The awkward pose of the beast sort of messes up the flow, in my opinion and the entire upper third of the frame is blank, and crowded in the other 2 thirds. For this, your impact suffers.

I will keep this short but try to be informative; there is only 3 pieces of steak left on my plate.

There is a uniqueness to the dragon's design but creatures infused with technology are starting to appear more in this style of illustration. The technology has a combine-esque feel (see Halflife 2). It also looks like you used imaged of American soldiers as reference when painting the man engaging the dragon (right) and the communication officer but the third solider looks possibly middle eastern. If you plan on doing more work like this, creating a unique uniform could enhance the images.

Second, there are some things going on in the picture that are hard to see. The large pallet-looking structure reminds me of ruins but it is really not very clear what it is.

You should inspect the ruins in this picture and try to compare. There is also a luminescent blue light at the end of the dragon's tail. I can not figure out what it is supposed to be. The brown object that is in front of the dragon's mouth is also hard to identify.

Basically this whole crit breaks down into 2 things:
1. If something is to famillier people will just skip over it and look at something else.
2. If it is to hard to decipher what one is looking at then it becomes a point of focus detracting from the rest of it. If the object in question is to large then people will just give up trying to figure out the picture and move on.

Wow.......*breathe.......*breathe..... Simply amazing...

Sorry about that, I just about hit the floor when I saw this. Your skills and mastrery of the elements of art and the principles of art are unprecidented.

I wish I could achieve this level of skill for in my own digital art and airbrushing...but I still feel I have a long ways to go...a really long way to go.

But regardless, I thought that I was reading a GameInformer and this was a preview of an upcoming game...If it were to come out I'd definatley buy it. LOL...

( I understand that this is an airbrush, and I airbrush so I know the level of difficulty putting a piece of this magnitude together and to edit it would probably mean a complete do over). But the only thing I'd change if at all possible would be the toes. They just seem a little weak...for a B.A. dragon the toes seem scrawny... I'd attempt to bulk them up. But you dont have to cause your the artist, it also may be incredibly difficult, and it's your choice.

Well, it's still amazing and jaw dropping. I look forward for more of your artwork... Keep up the amazing artwork.

Thanks but its not actually an airbrush its a full digital painting, from scratch, some textures were used but the actual characters and scenery was painted.

wow, looks great, much better than this so called modern art where art looks like it would have been made by a todler
AdamBurn's avatar
Ha yeah funny but that kind of art gets a lot more attention, if I scribbled on a piece of paper and gave it a deep meaning Id get millions haha

Woah, for a moment, I thought the creature was carrying a city on its back.

an incredible peice, full of action and drama. I love the foreground soldiers, the light and dust around them is flawless. The collapsed building reminds me of the trade center photos, with that pylon sticking up into the air.

I would agree with other posts that there are segments of the dragon creature that are rather awkward, mainly the legs/feet, and the top most guns.

There's also what seems to be a small running figure beneath the maw of the dragon, in the background. This figure (if it even is such, and not a peice of shrapnel) is in my opinion the worst section of the peice.

Overall, an excellent work, well worthy of a favorite.

hi, i was wondering how you did the soldiers in particular, because they look awsome, aswell as the picture as a whole, dont get me wrong it's fantastic! but i'm really finding it diificult to paint them, thanks (:
AdamBurn's avatar
Lighting is key, get some good lighting effects and it boosts a lot of areas, ading some texture from maybe fabric or even rocks wil make it look more rea, also looking at images of real soldiers and seeing how they look

ahh thanks again man, you've really helped me in my paintings etc (:

You did so wonderfully, it looks like a photograph!

so the dragon is a bio-technological construct and attacking the earth right?
AdamBurn's avatar
Well in my head it is a war between two factions, one relies on technology like in todays army, the other creates bio eginered monsters with big guns on them to fight, haha.

either way man nice one :D
