Attic - Sanctimonious by Acrylicdreams Attic - Sanctimonious by Acrylicdreams
This was a commissioned artwork for the upcoming album "Sanctimonious" by German Metal band Attic ( ), out on August, 18th.

This is quite different from my usual style, rather a drawing than a painting (except the clouds). I decided to try another style because I felt it would fit the topic better. In my usual, rather realistic painting style this may have looked too peaceful and kitschy (especially because the band wanted a really bright image, dominated by white and with no supernatural or gruesome elements).
It was a hell lot of work but the details were quite fun to do.

I started with a pencil drawing (outlines and some of the details for the buildings and gravestones), scanned it and continued to work on it on a Wacom tablet in Painter and Photoshop. It really changed a lot over the weeks, only the buildings stayed almost completely the same as on the pencil drawing (at least their basic shapes). I rearranged the gravestones (made much more of them) and added the tomb slabs and also a lot of details. This was by far the most time consuming illustration that I've done so far for a band. For the clouds I used the watercolour brushes in Corel Painter.

It is well worth zooming in and looking at all the details, I can ever read on of the headstones!  Between reading that and seeing what thew other two nuns were up to, my perception of the scene certainly changed!

I applaud your going out of your normal style and tackling something new.  Nice work! :)

Thanks a lot, Paul! This one was really exhausting and during the beginning I wasn't even sure if my new style would work, but I think it was worth it and the right thing to do.
