Can people generally be "just friends" with the opposite sex (or whichever they happen to be interested in)?

Well, for my part I didn't have a lot of male friends until I started university (lots of boys studying history ;)).
Before that I had two, maybe three male friends, and I ended up together with one of them... and it is much easier to be friends with males for me now, because before I had a boyfriend, I often found myself wondering: "Could there be something here?" when I was getting to know a boy.
But yeah, I'm convinced there can be perfectly platonic friendships even though the friend is of a gender you're attracted to :)

I have difficulty thinking of anyone as anything other than a friend. Messed up hormones I suppose. :c

Originally I was just going to make it a guy/girl question, then decided to broaden the spectrum. Yup.

Be honest, it's a poll, I can't see who says what. I'm not particularly asking whether you can, but if you think people generally are genuinely platonic.. or.. *cough* not. XD
