I hate the one that says 'Simply having a wonderful Christmas time!' Over and over. One year my bus driver played that on repeat. For... whatever reason. >___>; I also lived almost an hour away from school. So I heard it maybe. Once... or...... 43234234534523243 times.
Understandable enough - I worked once in a grocery store that had a limited playlist.. so the staff working had to hear the same songs over and over again in one shift.. that was enough to make you christmas-caroled out. A small dose of christmas music gets me in the spirit, but that made me and a number of other staff members twitch.
Each to their own - out of curiosity, though, do you hear the English-type carols, or are they sung in Finnish/different carols altogether?
We hear the English ones pretty often, and there are a lot of Finnish translations of them playing as well (Finns used to translate every song back in the day - it's the worst when you're all like: Hey, the Beatles is on on the radio - wait, what, why Finnish words?? D
I suppose there must be original Finnish Christmas carols as well, but none springs to mind (and they're probably all really depressing, too XD)
Of course, we're Fenno-Swedes so we have a lot of Swedish Christmas records at home, so I know them better
Because I generally only like classical Christmas music, any novelty Christmas song (ie; anything with "reindeer" in the title) earns an immediate place on my blacklist.
In other categories, the worst offenders are: "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" "The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire/ Jack Frost nipping at your nose~) "White Christmas" "Winter Wonderland" "Jingle Bells" "Silent Night" and "The First Noel"
Nothing against any of them (which are all good when done with a choir and/or orchestra), but nothing ruins a Christmas carol like having some spoiled pop star caterwauling it like a drunk teenager in a karaoke bar. There should be a five-year ban on new versions of the above-listed songs.
And now, I think I'm going to go drown out the memory of that horrible reggae "Little Drummer Boy" I heard once with my Irish Christmas album. (Instrumental carols with Celtic fiddle! )
I like *some* of those songs, but I'm pretty sure it's largely because I was involved in a choir-like program when I was younger that performed many of those songs. Lots of memories associated with many christmas songs.
But I do find the many pop-star-remixes atrocious as well. Thank goodness I only have to hear those when they pop up on the radio I rarely ever listen to..
