I was very kindly invited to do a guest set for Paralogos recently, and I responded by rubbing Scots all over it, as I do. This was a super fun set to do!!
Scots, for those unaware, is a language spoken in Lowland Scotland. It split off an earlier form of English, and as such parts of it can resemble English as we know it. In fact, it's very possible to understand chunks of Scots only knowing English, but it will look and sound very strange, and parts will be totally incomprehensible.
If you know anything in Scots, it's probably Auld Lang Syne, the song people sing aggressively at New Years.
It's not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic, a Celtic language spoken in Highland Scotland! They have totally different roots and are spoken by different groups of people.
Dazzie is based off my childhood love of playing with marbles. I was far too delighted to find a word just for, Glass Marbles, haha. I kept just calling this one Chiquita Dave... They're so pleasant looking.
Corbie is based off the traditional Scots song Twa Corbies, which itself is based off the older song Three Ravens. In short, it's about a pair of ravens talking enthusiastically about what they'll do with the body of a man whose been totally abandoned and will never be found. As such, this Paralogos got a similarly morbid magic. I like to think about them as a bit of a graverobber, but obviously that's up to the owner.
Aikraw was chosen almost entirely because I really like the word, ha. That said, I had a lot of fun making my necessary over-complicated plant Paralogos. Turns out, I like lichens.
Thrissil is based off the story of how Scotland got its national flower, the thistle. As it goes, some Nordic invaders where trying to sneak past some guardsmen, but stepped on some thistles. This caused them to yell in pain, which alerted the sleeping guards, who cleared out the invaders. The thistle was then honoured with the position of national flower. How true this is is up to question, but this Paralogos is absolutely armed with a claymore, very spiny, and very ready to fight you.
