hey, i have a question if you like this idea. mermaids! only their entire body is scaly, with exoskeleton plates, only leaving the front side vulnerable. their face isn't human, and they have fish legs on the tail, and fish arms below where a humans would be. the arms and legs have big fins on them to help them swim, allowing them to spread everything out, to look scary. they also have sticky pads on the inside of the thick arms and legs instead of hands and feet, and the intelligence of a monkey. their faces are long and flat, and have a large mouth, with big eyes that actually move around on the face. but only can move an inch or two. they eyes are about the size of a baseball, and are on the upper sides of the face, leaving a fairly big blind gap in front of their face. luckily they can move their face, as it rests on a fairly big neck. the neck is actually more or less engraved into the body, which is why the fish arms are much lower, making it hard to look forward for an extended amount of time. but it isn't impossible.
these creatures, that i will nickname mermen for now, actually rest on the ground for the most part, but they move around quite a bit. they will commonly stay in shallow waters as it is easier and less dangerous, plus the land is right there, allowing them to go up and eat plants or bugs if they can't find food. they must stay wet however, as getting dry hardens up their body and makes it hard to move, requiring the help of a fellow to bring you back in. they have "gills" that are actually different from earths, but still accomplish the same thing. they filter oxygen from water. the mermen have also evolved to take in air from the outside, by inhaling in gulps. they first compress their faces, then they open their mouths to let the air fill in the space, and then have the air filter through their gills from the inside. it isn't the easiest option, and doing it about 10+ times can dry their mouth up, permanently damaging it. luckily they can commonly do a trip in two to three gulps so they do fine in most cases.
they also communicate in really deep low resonance roars.
i plan on drawing these creatures, but i mean... i want your opinion. because you are super cool. and do aliens.
