Its an older pic, but its kinda cool.

This larvae of this parasitic species floats high in the atmosphere. When it spots a potential host lower below, the balloon on its back rapidly deflates and it plummets claws-first downwards, like a javelin.

Just as it is about to strike its victim, the claws open out and tear into the hide, anchoring the creature. There it lives as a parasite on the larger animal and prepares to launch more floating larvae for the next generation.

nice! how big are these things? I'm just curious

(I thought they were huge at first, but then I thought it would be scary if the larvae were huge)
Abiogenisis's avatar
Actually I always imagined this one not much bigger than a football

This piece is so relaxing. An abnormal form of nature that still brings brings peace and wonder. Did you work on any sci-fi films? If you did, I would love to check them out.

Reminds me of this short sci-fi story Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about weird gas filled creature in the high atmosphere sort of like an aerial gas-filled Portuguese Man-of-War.

Yeah its a classic idea. I remember seeing it in Carl Sagan's Cosmos

reminds me Endymion by Dan Simmons, where was an oxygen gas giant with such things)
