Fairytales

Greetings creeps!

I have two things I want to discuss with you:

The first thing is an announcement directed at the hundred or so of you who have been begging me to read "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. Well, through a mutual connection completely unbeknownst to me, Erin was introduced to my work, and loves it! So we've begun collaborating on a promotional product for the novel. Which is super cool. So now, not only do I have a great excuse to read the novel, but I suspect you'll all be seeing artwork from me based on the novel.

The second thing is a question: Does anyone have a favorite Grimm fairytale you'd like to see me make? I've been asked to participate in a show this October, and I'm doing fairytale characters. I'm of course working on "Beauty and the Beast" and I've got "Sleeping Beauty," "Rapunzel," "The Seven Ravens," "The Glass Coffin," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Snow White and Rose Red," "The Little Mermaid" (which, yes, I do know is by Andersen, but, whatever), and "Cinderella" on my list, but those where the ones I thought of at the spur of the moment. I could flip through my own fairytale books, but I really want to know what you all want to see!

Thanks! And keep creeping!

~A

Congratulations on all the wonderful news! Night Circus is a perfect fit. :)
My suggestions for fairy tales would be:
- The Seven Ravens
- Jorinde & Joringel
- The Juniper Tree
- and the lesser known (but right up your alley) fairy tale murder ballad (!) The Singing Bone or the Twa Sisters ([link]
Looking forward to seeing more of your Beauty & the Beast project as well.

I always liked Snow White and Rose Red... I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers it. The tale of the Firebird is a good one too. Alibaba and the forty thieves. Although the last two aren't Grimms. Then there's the Steadfast Tin Soldier and there was one where the soldier makes a deal with the devil and can't take a shower for so many years. I can't remember the name of that one but I love it.

Oh! and the Red Shoes! Good grief, what a macabre tale.

It's not Grimm, but Tatterhood is far and away my favorite fairy tale of all time. I also like these ones:
Misfortune (Italian, collected by Italo Calvino)
The Goblin and the Grocer (Hans Christian Anderson)
The Fox Sister (Korean)
Iron John/Iron Hans (Brothers Grimm)
The Language of the Birds (Russian)

I like Little Red Riding Hood, but the real one where the wolf wins! That hunter thing was total b.s. and I always felt bad for the hungry little guy!

I like the Tinderbox but that's by Anderson

Either Grandfather Death or The Juniper Tree. Those are the best stories, in my opinion.

I like the story of Children of Lir,
not of the grimm tales, but does have an unhappy ending
in a way where the children live as swans for 900 years
from a curse and after been turned human aged rapidly after the number of years

THE FROG PRINCE! I adore the original Grimm tale and would be very fascinated to see what you do with the "well" and "golden ball" elements.

:D I can't wait to see what you do with Beauty and the Beast! As far as suggestions, The Polar Bear King (or King Valemon) is one of my favorites. Or maybe The Pied Piper.

The Wild Swans by Andersen has always been a favorite of mine. There are many different variations of it, as I have seen.
I also love the story of Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Fair. It's a Russian Fairy Tale that I read when I was a child.

So yeah, they're not Grimm, but are still worth checking out :D
