UPDATE 2016 - Redrawn/painted

More for my fairytale series. In the original story, Rapunzel not only lets a strange man climb her hair into her bedroom, but he impregnates her. Thus the ensuing chaos with the wicked old witch and the prince getting is eyes gauged out or something horrific like that. Fun!

Prints available here!

This is amazing, it is so good to see Rapunzel drawings that isn't based on Disney Rapunzel. :)

Wonderful! I love Rapunzel's expression, her wonderful hair and how she grabs her belly. Had Frau Gothel given her some basic sexual education this wouldn't have happened... But the story wouldn't have been as interesting! This blue Medieval/Renaissance dress fits Rapunzel, and I love the headress. You're an artist and I love your work! Your takes on Alice, Snow White and Cinderella are pretty cool too!

I really like that you included her pregnancy in your artwork. It's not like it's my favourite part of this fairy tale but people seem to forget or not to know that Rapunzel actually got into big trouble by showing a big belly due to the pregnancy.
And I like her outfit here :)
I'm kinda interested in how you would design her living place in the tower.

Rapunzel's expression, the colors you used, and the shape of the frame (reminds me of the Ace of Spades): all add up to a very visually appealing piece.

Y'know, when you say it like that, ol' Mother Gothel might just have been justified in her freaking out...

The only motivation I have to work some day is to get money so in a possible future I can pay you to do a personal painting. Of course, all my dreams would be shattered if you stop taking commissions.

Amazing update, by the way!

They also did have a plan to get her out too- she was going to weave a ladder...but when the witch found out they didn't need it :P
I like the original ending though, SPOILER ALERT, where the prince went blind and wandered around looking for her and when he found her, her tears healed his eyes. He's the prince that seemed to suffer the most for his bride in the fairytales I've read.

Ha. I remember being really surprised that Disney was going to do Rapunzel *because* of that Very Important Twist. Little did I know how much they'd change it!

This picture is lovely, and I deeply, deeply enjoy it. The flow of the hair, her belly, the placement of her hands, the coloring, her expression... Wonderful job.

Little correction: I feel pretty sure it were the fairytale collection of the brothers Grimm who made Rapunzel famous, not Andersen - Wiki agrees.

Also afaIk: the earliest Grimm-Rapunzel story were Rapunzel gets indeed pregnant and thus the witch becomes so enraged was already changed into a slightly tamer Rapunzel version by the Grimms themselves - when their books popularity became so big that they were reprinted. I'm heavily presuming most Grimm books you get in our book stores nowadays contain the chaster Rapunzel (though this Rapunzel has little twins as well when the Prince finds her again in the end, so the intercourse still happened). I gueeess (!) it's not impossible that the first Grimm edition of the fairy tales had in the meantime also their reprints ... if you're interested, happy hunting!

More similar version to the original is a book called "Zel". In which the witch is more of a person and not wholly evil and Rapunzel goes crazy. Very good.
