Little Mermaid by AbigailLarson Little Mermaid by AbigailLarson
"Beauty and the Beast" is my favorite fairytale of all time, but Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Mermaid" is a close second. Mermaids are one of the wonders of the mythic world, like dragons, because every culture has a story about them. I love experimenting with different looks for them, but for this piece I wanted to keep that traditional "golden age" fairytale mermaid look.

This was drawn in ink and colored with watercolors.

I love how you drew her long oregen hair. The skull makes look kind of creepy.

I just wanted to let you know that this man not only is stealing your artwork and claiming it as his own in his deviantart gallery, he actually got a Daily Deviation on this piece.  little mermaid by Ray-Colt-and-children by RayColt

I just heard - thank you for letting me know! I've been trying to get his page removed for weeks, but DA has still not gotten back to me. I've filed new reports, and written to the violations team directly. I hope this can be cleared up soon.

Me too. It used to be so much easier to report art thefts several years ago. What really upsets me worse than the art theft itself though is that he actually got a Daily Deviation for something that wasn't even his to begin with.
While his actual page is still up for the time being--I am pleased to say that his "Daily Deviation" was stripped from him.

I'm glad the DD was removed! I really wish it was easier to report accounts, but I'm going to keep pestering DA until this is properly taken care of. Thanks again for letting me know!

Indeed. Ive known her in person for some 25 years. her fairy stuff has vast similarities to some of your work. I had wondered if some how she was an inspiration.  She was one of mine for a while back in the day.
She used to do tech pen detailed drawings so tiny that when the word thumbnail sketch was used, that she thought Thats what it ACTUALLY MEANT. SKETCHES THE SIZE OF THUMB NAILS, AND IT BECAME A THING WITH HER FOR SOME YEARS. SUPER TINY DETAILED DRAWINGS.  LOL.
Pardon my caps lock. my button sticks, im never yelling and i tire of constantly going back to correct.

This next is Not an insult.
I wish I had the ability to leave off my details at times.  To just do more basic line drawings then add broad shading with water color or copi etc.
I would be able to churn out far more works than I do.
I envy the simplicity of your style.   You can move on to a work where inspiration takes you almost at a whim, where I often feel inspired to move on, but my work is incomplete, then I feel trapped in having to finish it, and the inspiration wanes.

Any advice there?

Yours is soooo much more the way the Andersen story goes than, say, Disney's.

I LOVE your drawing style, holy crap. It reminds me very much of the artist Arthur Rackham's work, both for style and content, and he's one of my top three favorite "big-name" artists. :)

im not sure if the hair was an intentional disney reference but i like it either way :) it looks as though her whole body is scaled... is that the classic way to depict mermaids? seems unusual to me. beautiful colouring and i love the ragged look all your characters have...

Fist of all, I love your work! :)
But what I'm really curious about is what type of paper you use for your watercolors?
I'm just getting into the medium and your paintings have such a wonderful texture.

This is so beautiful! I like the composition and colour palette, especially the sky - it indeed reminds of the soft colours they favored  during the Golden Age of illustration. Your style is of course as gorgeous as ever. May i ask what do you apply the ink with? Brush? dip pen?

fantastic style and amazing colour.

Would you attempt to do other versions of mermaids; Melusine, Selkies, Finnfolk, Nixies or Tritons?
