Becoming a photographer

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 28, 2012, 3:56 AM

Wow, it's been nearly two years since I last updated my journal. I haven't been on DA much since then but I'd love to use all the features it makes available to promote my work more. You see, I've quit a few jobs, learned some stuff and now fancy myself a photographer. I specialize in performing arts, travel, street and documentary work. I've been shooting for NH7, Rolling Stone and Conde Nast Traveller. I've been known to bamboozle about in a studio in the past, and even shot some food for an upcoming restaurant, but that's besides the point.

So what's all the noise about? Well, I'm going to try and showcase my photography here and also make prints available by the power of high-resolution TIFFs. It's not just about the money - it's also about following a process that brings your work full-circle, from conceptualization to sale. I'll also seek advice and feedback to improve, so please do check out my gallery for pieces you haven't seen before and let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading and see you around DA!

Tales from Shivaji Road

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 15, 2010, 12:02 PM

New photos!

Hey everyone, I'm happy to report that I've been actively taking pictures recently. My latest collection is again set in one of my favourite Bangalore neighbourhoods, Shivajinagar. It's a predominantly Muslim area, with mosques, restaurants and streets lined with houses big and small. It's also home to the amazing Russell Market, a melting pot of meats, vegetables and seafood from all over the South. There's even a 100-year old gym and movie theatre. Here are some photos from the set:

I went .com!

That's right, I bought! I've currently hosted my DA portfolio there, and my tumblog too. Soon I'll have a full-fledged Wordpress blog there too.

Hope everyone's doing great. All the best!

yay devMEET!

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 7, 2010, 10:56 AM

The meet that was

We had a fun little devMEET this morning, just five of us crazies. It was a blast though! ajayverghese and I were the first to arrive on the scene at NGMA, and soon enough were joined by grisloup, Xandox and Madsterinc.

After a quick introduction, we headed into the gallery to check two wonderful exhibits - Signposts of the Times featuring works by various Indian artists, sculptors and photographers, and TV Viewers, a photo exhibit by Olivier Culmann. We then headed to the cafe for some extra-sweet chai and to discuss what we just saw, and had a little show and tell too, describing our choicest works and detailing the stories behind them.

Turned out that we were all photographers today: ajayverghese was kicking it old-school, and brought a lovely collection of slides (photos) from his recent trip to Kerala;
grisloup showed off his architecture photography portfolio;
Madsterinc took us through Bihar with his set of shots from his two-month stint in the state as a researcher;
Xandox brought to the table a delightful collection of conceptual photography, sketches and digital art (most of which can be seen in her gallery) and I showed my favourite photo sets - Varanasi and Munshi Galli (the latter was shown to describe my ideas for a project to capture sights of Bangalore city that haven't changed in years).

We then headed to Lavelle Road for a quick but heavy lunch at The Egg Factory, an eggetarian restaurant. We discussed plans for future meets, and we're looking to have another meet on the 21st. We had a great time! Send in your ideas, make known your willingness to show up, and we'll see see you in two weeks. Cheers!

bangalore devMEET!

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 3, 2010, 3:07 AM

About the meet

Hey everyone! The Bangalorean Deviants are getting together for our first meet this year. We're looking forward to meeting everyone to check out some great art, meet new people interested in art and design of all disciplines, show off our work, grab a bite and have a happy Sunday!

This event is open to anyone who's interested in art - you needn't be a member of the Bangaloreans group on Deviantart, or even a Deviantart member. Bring your friends, even if they're philistines - the more the merrier!

We'll meet at Bangalore's National Gallery of Modern Art, where they have two wonderful exhibits: Signposts of the Times (art and sculpture by various Indian artists) and TV Viewers (photography by Olivier Culmann).

Once done, we'll gather round to show and describe our own work (bring your prints and thumb drives). You're also free to ask questions, chat about art - the why, where and how - and even discuss your upcoming/ongoing projects and look out for collaborators.

After that, we'll head to Egg Factory on Lavelle Road for lunch (and dessert for those with a sweet tooth), stuff ourselves silly andhead home for a well-deserved afternoon nap.

Get in touch

Call/Text Abhimanyu aka abe-x (+91 98454 27782) for any questions.

Bring along your work/portfolio as prints or on a virus-free thumb drive. Or send in your work as a zip file to
You can also bring along cameras and notebooks if you want to shoot/sketch during the meet.
Bring friends along too, if you like.

Hope to see you there!

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 11, 2009, 5:06 AM

Hello, all! I'm finally back home after a month of travelling around North India. I've got 30gb of photos to go through, and I'd like to take my time figuring out how to post-process these things. I've got plenty of nice things to show you! Perhaps I could release pictures from each place as a collection, with a descriptive journal entry to accompany them, what say?

Let's begin. Here are some photos I took at a Led Zeppelin tribute concert at New Delhi's Hard Rock Cafe, featuring the all-too awesome Ashhar Farooqui of Teddy Boy Kill.

I took a bunch of photos on the way home from a friend's place around noon yesterday. The sky was pretty gray and cloudy, so I had to resort to post-processing to bring in some additional magic. I like how these turned out, but I still think there's some depth that's lacking in my work. I'll keep working on that. Do take a look and let me know what you think. Cheers!

I just uploaded some new deviations, which are actually reworked photographs I took in 2007, using a point-and-shoot Sony DSC-60. I love that camera, the Carl Zeiss lens made for some easy shooting that didn't scream 'novice'. Maybe I'll pick up another if I find one at Bangalore's National Market.

Hi everyone, I'm slowly getting back to spending time on Deviantart. I've started working with a web/new media advertising and marketing agency called 22feet ( in Bangalore, India.

I've pretty much stopped doing any graphic design over the past year, what with work and everything. However, I've been developing an interest of sorts in photography, and I just bought myself a Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i! I'm still learning to use it, but expect pictures over the next couple of weeks. I'd love some project suggestions that'd help me learn more about taking good pictures. For example, a friend told me he completed an assignment capturing alphabets in nature (formed by tree branches, streams on the ground, etc.). Send 'em in!

I'm also working on writing some new music. There's some electronica and acoustic stuff for you to sample at Let me know what you think.

Hope the sun is shining as brightly on your side of the world as it is here. Cheers!

wow, DA's all grown up now! I've been visiting the site on and off for the past year for my customization needs, but I wasn't aware of the upcoming v6. The site looks great, and I hope everyone enjoys the updated UI. As always, I wish skins & themes would get some more time in the spotlight here, but it's all about demand and supply, isn't it?

For those of you who'd like to know what I've been upto: I graduated from college in May, having earned a BA in Economics, Sociology and Psychology from Christ College, Bangalore. I'm currently working with an ad agency called White Canvas (, as a Client Servicing Executive. I'm also part of an electronica/trip-hop group called Tempo Tantrick. Please check us out on

I've begun submitting some photographs I've taken over the last 7-8 months, focusing primarily on composition. I'd love some feedback. That'll actually help me decide whether to start saving up for a decent DSLR. Any recommendations? Thanks for reading!

I've resigned as Gallery Director for Skins & Themes. I am no longer able to put in as much time as I would have liked, and the gallery isn't shaping up as I was hoping it would. In any case, I had a blast. It was a real honour working with the best art site on the planet, and their outstanding AR team. I wish everyone there the best of everything. Cheers, y'all!

: UPDATE : Thanks for all the kind words, guys. They mean a lot to me.

Yep, updates to this journal and few and far apart, all right. Nothing much happened thus far at S&T, or with me. However, I've now completed my 2nd year of college, and have started interning at an ad agency (Lowe). I hope to learn something here, and perhaps get some work done as well.
In other news, I've just got a spanking new Schecter C-1 Artist Series Limited Edition Electric Guitar (photos soon), and a PS2 (yeah, I'm old-skool...).
S&T hasn't been seeing much action of late, as I mentioned, but we've been getting tons of applications like program launchers and widgets in the galleries. I think it's time we got a User-Submitted Software section. Whatsay?

Wow, its been a long time since I updated my journal. I've just been real busy with college and my band and whatnot, but I decided to clean up my act around here. As you can see, we've got a lot of great DD features of late, thanks to all the suggestions (special mention goes to AndrewDBarker). I've also cleaned up my gallery, which meant removing a lot of old icons and some writing. There's a new screenshot of mine up as well. Heck, I've even started blogging again! Also, Please click the 'Feature' button to check out the 4th installment of Skin Deep!

A couple of questions, though: does anyone else have trouble logging into Ever since they got out of beta and added the Google account login, every time I visit the site the page just keeps reloading by itself. Logging in is a trial-and-error thing for me.
Secondly, I'm using xp SP2, and of late, I receive an error message every time I start up, something about Generic Host Process 32 having made an error and requiring to close. I could just close it, but if I do, I can't open any programs. So I simply move the error window to the edge of the screen. Somebody help!

Whew! Its been a really long week for me, what with tons of coursework that was due on Monday (all done, yay!) plus a major rock competition that I drove 15 miles to watch.

I opened a Picture Skins Discussion Forum to find out what deviants thought about what should be done (or not) about picture skins, since these days they come a dime a dozen. There weren't too many replies, since the link is hard to find, so I wrote up a news article - (Dis)Allowing Picture Skins And The Like. Please leave your comments on either/both of them. Thanks a lot!

If you've got something to say about an upcoming policy decision on whether or not the Skins & Themes Gallery should allow picture skins, this is the place.
A picture skin is a skin that has one picture or image spanning a large section of the skin, with original graphics for certain elements of the skin, such as control buttons and displays and so on.
The S&T Gallery does not allow generated skins (skins created instantly by a program, using any image as input - there's no real skinning involved). This was mentioned in the policy nieman created a long time ago, and the policy was also against picture skins. However, I thought that this would deter artists who were fans of anime, musicians, games, etc. from taking up skinning, since they might prefer to create a tribute skin for their favourite whatever. So I modified it to allow picture skins (read it here…).
Now, many members of the skinning fraternity here are up in arms about the huge number of picture skins in the gallery. A large number of these have minimal skinning effort put in by the artists who have submitted them, and I'm sure that's a cause of concern when it comes to matters of quality and of the true essence of skinning.
What are your thoughts on this issue? Please take a look around in the S&T gallery, and you'll see what I'm talking about. My suggestion is that a new category be opened in the S&T gallery for fan skins. The policy against generated skins will be enforced here as well, and we will also strive to promote quality over quantity.
Do comment here, and/or over at… , a a forum I had opened to discuss this. Thank you for your time!
