I'm working 20 hours + a week at the Texas Language Center, doing everything from maintaining mailing lists to organizing full-fledged language conferences. On top of that, 9 hours of grad work this semester... probably more next semester. I really want to take Historical Linguistics, but I'll also be interning at ESL services as a TA-- hopefully as more of an AI over the summer. And then, after I write my report, I'm DONE! And off to teach for a year in Russia, if I get my applications all in on time =D

So I haven't had much time for drawing or looking at other people's work, which sucks, but I'm bursting with ideas! So hopefully I can work some of those out over the holidays.

As a side note, as much fun as I had on my date, the ass hole hasn't talked to me since. I guess he didn't have as much fun. Saves me the trouble of shaving and wearing makeup I guess.

My back is killing me :icongwahplz: In fact, when I went into my chiropractor, he literally said it was "whacked."

In other news, I loved the new Sherlock Holmes movie, which I saw with :iconnauticalnymph: over the break. It was really over-dramatic at parts and much more actiony than your run-of-the-mill Holmes movie, but it had a lot of the essentials of the old characters, which is what counts ;) I think it's about time that there is a Holmes that is portrayed as a deviant. I mean, it was originally hinted that he was on drugs (pff, like everyone in Victorian England, and like Arthur Conan Doyle himself :p!) But I'm glad that Watson also wasn't portrayed like a moron. I mean... come on, now. He's a doctor.

And while at first I was like, "Oh, they're trying to get extra points from fan girls by making a slim, good looking Watson".... I think I might be one of them now :icongwahplz:. Yeah, I definitely am, lol.

Anywho, I'm just sitting around waiting for a call to substitute and converting all my m4ps to mp3s, so they'll work on my family's mp3 players. Not that I think the parentals will be a big fan of Wumpscut... or Beck... or most of the stuff I have :|

In the meantime-- more Russian Novel pictures! My present WIP is a scene with the Bronze Horseman from Andrei Bely's Petersburg, perhaps my favorite novel of all time. But so far it's looking a little flat. We'll see how it goes =D

Sorry for completely ignoring everyone this holiday :icongwahplz: I'm a stalker, not a chatter!

Yup, I'm still thriving on the creative juices, but they're in all the wrong places!! I should have finished re-writing (again) my book Call Me, Calinor and sent it off to an agent by now. Instead, I've written kick ass science fiction with :iconnauticalnymph:, worked on drawings I started and gave up on 2+ years ago, started a series of Russian novel pics, resumed writing in a Napoleonic RPG, and made several pieces of jewelry to sell on ebay!

As hard as I've been working, I feel like a schmuck. But I did finally realize why I've been having trouble writing Calinor. I thrive on feedback, and I haven't been getting it. So I volunteered my family to beta-read on a forum I set up for my writing. Plus, writing on a forum in posts makes it feel less like work. I don't have a blank word doc staring me down, but my familiar Internet playground =D

I'll just have to see how it works out! Of course... it would work a lot better if I didn't start playing Mafia Wars on Facebook, but like with all things, I got over my addiction pretty quickly, and I only check it a few times per day now. Soon I'll be down to one!

So, while I was going to update my journal with links to examples of my art for my commissions section, I'm just going to leave that for a time when I have no intention of writing!

I'm back to writing!

I spent a month looking for a job but was fairly comfortable with my steadily dwindling account, since my parents said they would give me money for graduating. That turne dout to be money toward publishing my book Call Me, Calinor. I will have some sample chapters up soon. I did have some up, but they've been edited, so don't bother with them XD

Not that anyone really bothers with them :'( I love you HVici!

But realizing that I don't have money coming in, I've been staying up until 2 in the morning writing fantasy and watching The Golden Girls. ROFL, most hilarious show besides Gintama, IMO.

I've got three chapters done so far-- Wish me luck :icongwahplz:

And lucky me :iconimhappyplz: I'll be home for the next two weeks for doctor, dentist, and eye appointments (TRAUMA ._.) but that will give me time to work with NN on our rockin' sci-fi, which has a really lame working title -.-

Someone, please! Give me a name for a sci-fi that would smack the skin right off your face with its awesomeness!

I was in the hospital like two weeks ago, but I live! Nechu! Yes, this semester has been hell, but things are looking up in terms of court. Over the course of the next year, my nephew Silas will be reunited with his mommy! Thanks everyone for their prayers and for suffering my crazy stress and mood swings.

What I've been up to

Classes: I'm considering dropping my American lit correspondence class, which saddens me. The essays are very challenging, and it makes me feel awesome when I finally nail them after a long session of work. But my pressor hasn't spoken to me in months, and it would really be easier to just take it as a class. Hmph. I definitely have the time for it, though. I've been staying 3 hours late at school and arriving 3 hours early to avoid the traffic. Oh yeah. It's that bad.

My Russian play class is awesome, though. I've gotten to be pretty good friends with a lot of people in it, and I feel a lot more confident when I speak. I'll be painting the backdrops for it soon.

Court: Silas has been more adorable than ever, and since we had him all spring break, his manners improved quite a bit, too. Hmm. How interesting. He should be back with us permanently by the end of May! Things are going very well.

Writing: NauticalNymph and I have been cracking down on our sci-fi / fantasy, which has been loads of fun and the influence for many of my recent deviations =D

Art: Good golly, Miss Molly o.o Painting at my grammy's pre-K school, painting for my Russian class, drawing for Nymph-- and yes, still taking commissions, haha. I'd rather take commissions than do my American Lit work :p

Oh, and my sister gave me a lot of her iTunes music. She has an awesome job that pays out the wazoo, so she has like $2000 worth. Yeah, after about half an hour, my computer suddenly pinged and said "You have no more memory" or some such. But I finally discovered it had made like 2 copies of my entire iTunes library, and that was why. Silly machines. Obviously they will continue to undergo human oppression for some time. Mwahaha.

Ah, and my new favorite poem (aside from like... everything by e e cummings):

A man said to the universe:
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
"A sense of obligation."

Okay, so most of today I was either doing Russian homework or reading for my history discussion on Friday. We get about a whole book every week 8|... But that's not a normal amount of time there. I've been up since 6 working and didn't get back from school until 9. Yup, starting to feel like I took 18 hours this semester. But.... in a really masochistic way.... I'm enjoying it as much as I always do =D

I know, I'm so sick! Anyways, my classes this semester are as follows: Advanced Russian I, American History to the Civil War, Anthropology, Math (for Morons, I'm guessing from our work so far), American Literature 1865-Present, and Creative Writing: Fiction.

So even though I'll be super busy, I'll still have writing coming along. I'm thinking of posting some poetry from the collection I made over the summer, too. But art is also likely. I have some ideas cooking and a laptop with Painter on it XD!

Jude Saldana has again ruled against CPS, police reports, psych evaluations, and physical evidence to keep my three-year-old nephew Silas in the hands of violent strangers, his paternal grandmother and company. Not only that, but they shouldn't even have standing in the fight for Silas to begin with according to family law. His father admits his mother is violent and doesn't want his son raised by her, though he himself is incapable. But my sister cooperated with CPS after her boyfriend hurt Silas while she was at WORK. CPS was ready to give Silas back to her--if it were not for Judge Saldana.

My grandmother has standing because in an emergency, CPS granted her temporary custody. The Leesers, the family we are fighting, has not been in Silas' life for a year when the fight began. Every time he has to leave our house for theirs, he wails, "Don' wanna go Grandma Linda's." Yet every time he comes to our house, he is all too happy to leave them. He even says his house is blue, the color of ours--and not the color of Linda's. After months of being in their care--thanks to Judge Saldana--this is NOT NORMAL.</b>

Luckily, our last court battle was not for permanent custody, but the next may have to be. Because of our finances, we can only afford one more court date. If we lose, we won't be able to fight for Silas for an entire year. In addition, despite the fact that we supposedly have joint custody, we have to fight for our summer visitation!

Please pray that we get permanent custody of Silas and can bring him home for good.

Or if you have some influence out there, help us get Judge Saldana from San Antonio, Texas OFF THE BENCH.
I haven't been around on DA a lot this summer. I got a job counting airplane parts. That isn't the important part!
___

Wednesday June 20 our family was surprised to learn that what we thought would be a simple court hearing has actually become the final hearing for full and permanent custody of my three-year-old nephew Silas. It was supposed to be a hearing to show that his other grandmother had no standing in the custody battle, but this was changed.

My sister, Silas' mother, and my mother both have attorneys that have practically refused to do anything we ask them to, whether it be contacting key witnesses or even communicatign with each other, which is the root of the problem with Wednesday.

Silas has already been abused in the past, and we cannot allow a repeat, when the grandmother's own son admits her violent behavior. Silas has come home to visit us constantly covered in innumerable mosquito bites when someone down here recently caught West Nile virus the same way. Yet CPS refuses to do anything when they were all too willing to take custody away from my blameless sister.

They have lied on the stand constantly and won their way from judges despite our proof that they are purgers.

PLEASE PRAY FOR US AND FOR SILAS

As much as has gone sorely wrong in this case, I feel like it's all I can even do.

Silas is back here for the weekend, and he only gets cuter and cuter. He always crashes his first day back because we get him so late, but everyone was so happy to see him we just kept taking turns petting his sweet little head. It's bitter sweet that the trial for his permanent custody got put off, but we might get him for a few straight weeks in the summer, which will be such a blessing!

Today was the neighborhood garage sale. I made two dollars, but the highlight was painting with Silas on the patio. Thank goodness it was washable, because he made a mess! Once Aunt Lala and Silas' mommy got there, he decided to start painting me instead of the paper. I think the greenish-blue water is still draining out of the tub. Need to get some Draino.

Jacob got a scooter, so now he doesn't have to learn to ride a bike, which he really never liked. After things died down, we all went back inside and watched The Time Machine. Silas played through most of it, but then out of the blue started holding his hand up at the screen--as if he were using the force to battle the monsters in the second half. He kept yelling, "Come on! Come on!" After the movie was over, the menu kept playing clips with dramatic music and the monsters at some parts, just repeating itself over and over. Every time the music started, he would go "Haw!" and use the force on the monsters again, saying "All better!" when it would end, then suddenly swing around again when the music started over. This happened about 15 times before Jack finally turned it off, hehe.

After running around a while longer and drawing, he finally tuckered himself out and went to sleep. It was so cute, since he just curled up against me singing a garbled rendition of You are My Sunshine and playing with my hair while we waited for Grandma. I love my little man :') We're having his birthday party tomorrow--a week early, since we won't see him next weekend--and everyone's coming back up for some great food and fun with Si-Si.

Well, I was planning out my class schedule for the next two years. I do this so much that I actually have my degree plan on photoshop with layers labeled 'Spring 2008' and stuff like that so I can revise them easily. Today was nice, though, since I discovered that I can still graduate in 2009 pretty easily despite taking on a double major in English and Russian! So while NN is still enjoying her 5th year in her education program, I can take one of the one-year education programs down here and teach English and Russian!

That really gives me more opportunities to make money as a teacher, since Russian classes are usually canceled at the high school level. Luckily, there's also a magnet school in San Antonio that has Russian classes. I'll try to get in there, but if not, I can fall back on teaching English while I get my masters in Russian down there.

Even better, though, even with all that packed into my schedule, I'll still only be going to school three days a week next semester, and I will still be able to fit in extra pass/fail courses like The French Revolution here and there. It makes me very excited-- and very glad I didn't join the military. Of course, I also won't be going to Aix-en-Provence as I had hoped, but St. Petersburg in Summer 2008 has its own photoshop layer ;)

Yeah, I know. I didn't think any more bad luck could possibly befall me and my family either. That's why when I heard the phone ring this morning at 4:13 I decided to ignore it completely-- well, as well as I could ignore a booming mechanical voice yelling "Private Caller" at 4:13 in the morning. I fell back asleep for about ten minutes--then heard the little tinkering tunes of the cell phone ringing downstairs.

It's bad news, was all I could think. I mean, good news doesn't call insistently at four in the morning. It calls when you can enjoy it. There's just been so much bad news lately that I turned on my side and tried to ignore it again, but my stomach was turning. My anxiety levels have been unimaginable the past few months, after all. I thought maybe Silas was in the hospital again or someone was just trying to bother us. So, since I was pretty awake by the time they called back on the house phone, I picked it up this time.

I answered the typical 'is this the Ryan residence' questions with suspicion, followed by 'do you own an '87 Oldsmobile Cutlass' until 'Private Caller' turned out to be 'Hays Sheriff Department,' and 'bad news' turned out to be 'we found your car on the access road opposite Cabelas.'

Someone threw a rock in the window and stole my car, drove it a few blocks, then dumped it in a ditch. I'm cofused as to the point. I'm pissed, and there were no fingerprints.

*sigh* No school again then, with glass in my seat, but at least my step-dad said it would be easy to fix. Doesn't keep me from being pissed-- and wondering what else could possibly happen now. No doubt something will, though.

Watching: Battlestar Galactica

After a very rotten weekend and week, I'm finally on top of things again, mentally and physically! I ordered what seems to have been the Salmonella Sandwich at Chick-fil-A, which had me barfing so much over the weekend that I was too weak to go to school Monday, not that I missed much. Just means that's one less Monday I get to skip out of laziness =P And to top the weekend off, Battlestar Galactica was strange and sub-par. Dumb-as-a-rock Apollo got all of brilliant-young-tactical-officer Gaeta's lines. The bonus scene made up for it, though. Gaeta is repressing some bad New Caprica memories, but he can still be a bubbly rumor queen. community.livejournal.com/gaet…

The rest of my week, I thought, was killed by my anthropology teacher teaching her opinion as though it were carved in stone on Mt. Zion. I thought it was bad enough our book was biased, but anthropologists seem to fancy this idea that language determines HOW WE THINK. This is not the case. I highly recommend this book. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lang… . It's funny, awesome, and backed by science instead of skewed results and inaccurate assumptions. (The link explains the thesis of the book, by the bye.)

Today changed everything, though :o! I studied a total of one hour for my Russian test, which would focus on the genitive plural (the hardest thing I've encountered about Russian so far.) I woke up this morning, hit the snooze, and felt completely secure in doing so, napping again with the sudden realization that for Russian I'm not cramming before these tests--I actually know it now. It's a great feeling for someone with linguistic inclinations :) I am certain I did very well on the test.

Then! My class on snobbery--oh, I mean poetry--was canceled. And, while I'm more than happy (seriously, like I want to go find the guy on campus holding up the 'free hugs' sign and allow my bubble to be perturbed), she canceled it because her sister was having a baby. Now, look at these two examples of other teachers I know: 1) Nadya Clayton, a tiny Russian woman who taught all semester while pregnant, stepped out once to throw up, went back to teaching, and did not stop until the very day the baby arrived. 2) Neal Evans, his father had been ill and died during class. He received the news on the cell phone, turned for a moment to regain his composure, then continued to teach. These people are incredible in their dedication. I would have wanted them both to take some time off for themselves, I do not feel the same about Liz Jones. I'm going into serious debt to take her superficial class, and I'd like some sort of recognition for it.

Anywho, my anthropology project also went fantastically, and, as always, I adore my literature class. I got a 100 on the midterm, and I love my professor. I may try to take him again, and I'm definitely buying Moby Dick after reading Bartleby the Scrivener. Our next reading is Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself," which already nearly moved me to tears =)

I'd almost forgotten that not all poetry is emo crap, though I will admit Jones' Gertrude Stein selection was rather entertaining in its absurdity. www.bartleby.com/140/1.html (I love "Red Stamp")

Yeah, I'm all up and down. My projects and my Thucydides are keeping me really happy. I've got a good relationship going with my sister and my dad again. In fact--and this is always the way it seems to go with those two--the more time I spend with them, the more I care about them again. For years I thought my dad only wanted to see me for child support, but now that his kids are both over 18 he only seems to want to be a bigger part of our lives. Sure, he's a racist and an awkward conversationalist, but I love being around him. He's funny, intelligent, and he has this habit of recalling good memories much more than bad with his mental library of songs and jokes, many of which I remember from childhood.

I love my rooster, my rooster loves me
I love my rooster by the cottonwood tree
My little red rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo!
He doodles, he doodles, he doodles, he do

He'll be undergoing radiation treatment soon, and just like I thought when I began to see him again, now I'm terrified of losing him so quickly. I'm going to try to see him every weekend from now on, and I'm even seeing him again tonight. My sister wanted to go to a Cruxshadows concert but not alone. I still like them, so I'm going to join in since the show is pretty cheap and short.

In other news, I still hate school. Got all As again but not looking forward to the next semester except for Russian. I wish I could take a semester of languages only. Since I'll be the one taking out loans and everything now, I guess I can take whatever the hell I want. NN and I have also been working on a science fiction story called Hesperia that I'll elaborate more on later.

It was going to be an RPG, but it got too complicated, seeing as I'm the only one out of our RP group that can explain the theory of binary star mass transfer or the climate of a planet based on a hundred factors, etc. Nymph was the most involved in it for the fun cultural and religious aspects, so I just get to offer my great sci-fi know how =P

Well, today started bad. It actually started pretty awesome with me making some great progress on my rhetoric paper and then starting to feel sick, driving to school, discovering some lame event had taken up all available parking, and going home. But I've recovered from that mostly, since I finished my paper, which takes a load off for a busy, busy week. I have two tests in weather and climate and one in Russian. Considering I actually wanted to go to Russian today, I'm hoping I haven't missed something important.

But I've got a fun few days full of memorizing the face of the Earth, revisiting the instrumental case and subjunctive clauses in Russian, and listening to Jacob try to boss Silas around, Silas make a mess that pisses my mom off, or Silas yell at everyone for not letting him watch Cars after it's been on all day. I'm surprised I'm not insane, let alone that I'm actually in a good mood. By now I'd think I'd be as crazy as Gaius Baltar making out with a cylon girl that lives in his head while getting the inside of his ear drilled out by one in real life. Funny old world.

My Void characters and Battlestar Galactica are keeping me going. So say we all.

Well, today was jam packed full of goodness and business. I went to my school library for the first time ever, and I'm in love with it now =). I had purchased two books for my rhetoric papers only to find them there, which was a little upsetting, but oh well. This one is much better than my last one, and I will hopefully have it finished tonight before the one I ordered even arrives =P

I was surprised to be a little behind today in Russian with Aleksey teaching. (I skipped Monday.) Aleksey is from Belarus, so he packs a lot more in a lesson than Mr. Rappoport, who is a linguist and enjoys getting caught up on the cute little nuances of the language. He's in Bulgaria right now, though. But yes, we're telling time in more detail this year, which was hard enough in Russian already. 3:25, for instance, literally translates back to English as 25 minutes of the 4th hour. Plus, they use the 24 hour clock, which I loathe, and have different time expressions that take the accusative case instead. No wonder Russians drink so much.

The wonderful news, though, is that I made an A on my first rhetoric paper. Well, that was totally expected, since he said on my unrevised paper I would get an A- if I left it how it was. So... I didn't really do anything to it. I mean, UT doesn't have the A+, A- business when it comes to your final grade. I stopped going to a class last year once I got an A with the cumulative points =P The super almost unexpected news was the A I got on my government test! I prayed for at least a 92--and worked my ass off--and I got it B-) Even better, though, was that everyone else did so bad, she's giving us a chance for 5 points of extra credit.

Clava Bogu!

Aside from that, NN and I went to a fun little picnic last weekend for her grandpa's trucking company. She wasn't in a great mood, having just been slammed by the IRS for $500 in social security that she'll never actually see when she's 65. But we went, and she won almost $150 between this money machine and bingo. I won a costume contest dressed as a faun and got to try my hand at the machine, too, which was surprisingly tiring-- but profitable =D

And aside from that, I love Battlestar Galactica so much! I can't wait for this Friday :|

Well, I'm in a good mood again, so I figured I'd update this while it lasted. I'm pretty sure I did well on my Russian test today-- and pretty sure I'm going to find a way to keep taking it. So, I may yet be staying at UT, even though they give me absolute crap despite my 4.0 average. I need to go have my major officially changed, so I can start applying for English scholarships. I'm still considering German for my language credit, but I'll have to see what sort of classical civilization classes are available to be as a junior, first.

I can't really attribute the good mood to school, though. Mostly, I'm excited about the Leaky Cottage board workign to get a sci-fi fantasy rpg up and running soon. Hopefully it will take my mind off writing Void. In a way that's sad, but I want to write it so badly that it's been putting me in a bad way when I can't. I think I may be pretty well caught up in my classes for a little while, at least, though. Actually, I feel superbly nerdy for enjoying my climate and weather class as much as I do. It helps me think about the subtler aspects of the planets I intend to create. On the other hand, a lot of it is also review from my ET Life class, which was much more relevant to that interest. All the same, though, I guess it helps that the only class I'm completely unsatisfied with is government.

Give me a break, lady! I could teach it better than that, and I hate the damn class. You know, in truth. I really find a lot of it interesting when I read it, and then her class just crushes that interest with utter boredom. (Who majors in American government, honestly?)

In advance, I will warn that I was not selected even to be interviewed by the scholarship committee. They did not even think my case was interesting enough, apparently, to merit giving me the opportunity to prove myself. I suppose I can stop worrying what to wear on the 22nd or if I'm coming in to San Antonio or not, or if I don't if I should visit the high school newspaper staff since I'd be in town Friday.

No, instead I get to worry about faith and an over all lack of enthusiasm for life. God and I have an amusing relationship. You can almost see some of the human 'made in your image' origins. The closer people want to be with Him, the more he tests them, whether it's asking them to kill their son just to see if they'll really do what he asks, or to increasingly diminish any hope for a financially stable future by increasingly throwing costly troubles and snatching away quick relief. They say you have to believe you'll really get something when you pray for it, or you won't get it. There's the true test of faith. There's a difference between throwing yoruself on the dead boy three times and praying because you know God will give you what you want and praying time after time for relief because you know you won't get it. There's a difference between the early Christians trusting to God's love and the Romans trying a sacrificial ceremony over and over until they get the results they want-- that is, until they 'widdle the gods down into giving them what they want.'

Well, after so many years of receiving nothing, my limited trust is one of the last defenses I have left. Had I truly, truly believed I was going to get the scholarship that I truly, truly believed I deserved, then I would have been crushed by the simple truth: colleges give money to those that have it. Why else have such costly membership fees for the greek societies that claim to reward membership to those that have earned it academically? Why put such stock in whether a person was well-rounded (aka rich) enough to manage a trip off to some other country to help the disadvantaged or have a million hours of community service? I could never raise enough in scholarship money to afford a trip to Russia to help the ministries there like I wanted. I could never have enough to eat lunch every day on campus to have time to socialize with my peers like they want. I couldn't give more artwork away for free than I already have and still have money to buy paints.

There's a huge gap between what I want to do and what I can do financially, a gap as big as between the lower and upper class and reasonably so when they keep giving money to students who don't need it, while we talk about maxing out credit cards to save Silas from having to go live with his biological father. There's a huge gap between wanting to trust God with all my heart--against all scientific reasoning-- and actually finding the faith to do so. Forgive me, but I don't know how much more 'testing' I can take.
