With some care, Paruka made the usual journey that she took in order to get to work. This consisted of a bus journey within the district of Akihabara located in the city of Tokyo. By many standards, she was considered to be a pretty young woman with her long flowing black hair and brown eyes.
Many who saw her thought that she was some kind of fashion model thanks to her slender and delicate features. However, there was one aspect of her appearance that made many believe it was her profession. It was because of her sheer height which reached a respectable one-hundred and seventy-five centimetres.
This made her tower above the majority of the women that she came across as well as a good percentage of the men as well. Often when she walked in a crowd, she would begin to turn heads and almost become the centre of attention. This was something that Paruka would notice but try to ignore as much as she could.
Ever since she was a young girl, she had always suffered from a height complex as she had grown taller than most of her peers. It was only when she was at the tail end of junior high school before many of the boys in her school began to catch up with her. Even then, she remained the tallest girl in her school.
Those years had come and gone and Paruka found herself now as a young woman who was simply trying to make her way in life. Her job might seem demeaning by a portion of society, but it definitely brought in a decent amount of money and where she would actually feel like she fit in.
Eventually, she stood just outside of one of the many cafes that littered the district Akihabara. Even though the café was in the middle of the most populated city in Japan, it had a French name. The café had the title Le Café des Maids Imposantes and upon entering, she found herself almost in another world.
"Bonjour," said a voice upon her entry. There standing just in front of her was a woman who was dressed as though she was a French maid. Her cheerful smile and pleasant waving made anyone who entered feel welcome. She too was a very pretty woman who was around the same age as Paruka. Her hair was shoulder length and bright blue and her eyes were a dazzling green. But what was most shocking was that she was a full ten centimetres taller than Paruka. Even though she was wearing flat shoes. "Ah Petite Paruka, you're here!" The tone of her voice made it clear that she was happy to see her colleague.
"Hi Akemi," replied Paruka. As she looked inside, she could see that there were already patrons within the establishment. More than that, every person inside who was serving the customers were all women wearing French Maid outfits and were also of incredible height.
Le Café des Maids Imposantes was one of the many, many maid cafes within Japan but to try and stand out, they had a theme that was unique to them. Their theme was that every woman who worked there was of a towering height. In fact, Paruka was just at the minimum height requirement. If she had been even a single centimetre shorter, she wouldn't have been able to be employed at the establishment.
The women who worked there besides Paruka were all over one hundred and eighty centimetres tall. There was even one who reached just over one hundred and ninety centimetres in height, but there was one who was definitely above even that. But for the moment, Paruka couldn't see this colleague.
"Sorry I'm running late," stated Paruka. There was a slight hint of worry in her voice as she knew that this was something that happened more often than she would have liked. "The traffic has been nothing short of a nightmare."
"Oh, don't worry about it," replied Akemi with the same pleasant smile on her face. "But Ms. Toriyama does want to speak to you in her office after you've gotten changed."
"Ms. Toriyama wants to talk to me?" Her worry began to increase quite dramatically as she thought about having to speak to her manager. "Any idea why?"
"Nope, no idea." Her cutesy demeanour did nothing to lower Paruka's anxiety. "I was just told to tell you when you came in."
"Y-Yeah thanks."
Without saying another word, Paruka began to make her way towards the door that led into a staff only area. There she took her uniform out of her locker and got changed. She also had to make sure that her make-up was just right since this was something that patrons also found appealing.
Several minutes later, she was ready as she wore the same French Maid outfit that all of the other employees on the café floor wore. It was still insane for her to think that out of all the women who worked there that she was the shortest. But in a way, this was something that she found to be a pleasant circumstance. In fact, her nickname of Petite was due to her lack of height in comparison to the others.
They had also all made her feel very welcoming since like her, many of them had height related issues while they were growing up. In this café, not only was their height seemed to be the norm but was also appreciated. It didn't make them the most popular maid café in the region, but it definitely gave them something unique and brought in a steady flow of customers.
Most of these customers were young men but as long as they behaved themselves, they were always welcome. But these were not on the mind of Paruka as she began to make her way to the office of her manager. Her anxiety was increasing with every passing moment as she was more than certain that she was in trouble for something. If not for her lateness, but she was sure that she had done something else to earn herself a dreaded talk from her boss.
Eventually, Paruka knocked on the door that led into her manager's office. She saw the name on the door and with some care she knocked on it. There was a misguided hope within her that he wasn't there and so, she could simply start her work for the day and forget all about this. Unfortunately, she heard a voice coming from inside which told her to enter. Carefully she opened the door and poked her head inside.
"You wanted to see me Ms. Toriyama," asked Paruka. She was clearly nervous and just wanted to get all of this over and done with. If worse came to worse, she hoped that she could get another job in another maid café.
"Ah Paruka, please would you take a seat," replied Ms. Toriyama. She was a very short woman who looked to be in his thirties. She had long brown hair that was tied back and an outfit that looked similar to a business suit. It was primarily black in colour with a white shirt and red tie.
Paruka did take a seat in the chair just in front of the desk. Immediately, she placed her hands together and bowed her head. In a way, it looked as though she was begging and also apologising with her movements before she spoke.
"I'm so sorry ma'am," stated Paruka in a very apologetic tone. "I promise I'll try harder to be here on time."
"There's no need to apologise," replied Ms. Toriyama. "Your tardiness is not the reason for our meeting today."
"It's not?" replied Paruka with some confusion. She did lift her head but her hands were still placed together.
"Remind me, you're fluent in English, aren't you?"
"Y-Yes I am ma'am."
"Before I begin, have you heard of the Minolin Mares?" She remained sitting behind the desk and her focus was entirely on the woman sitting in front of her
"I don't believe I have. Are they a sports team?"
"Indeed, they are. They're an American Women's Basketball Team. Right now, it's the off season for their league and so, they are touring Japan playing local teams. Well, as part of their tour and for charitable purposes. The team are having one of their members work here for the day. However, their understanding of Japanese is next to non-existent and they are likely also ignorant of our customs. That is why I want you to shadow them and act as an interpreter during her shift at the café. Of course, you will be compensated for your efforts with a nice bonus at the end of the day. That is if you accept this additional responsibility."
For the moment, Paruka needed a moment to think about everything. Not only was she relieved that she wasn't in trouble. But she was being offered something that she had never considered in a million years. However, she also saw this as an opportunity, if she were able to succeed then it was likely that any blemishes that she had would be wiped away. Not only that but she thought that such a thing would bring a lot of eyes to the café and boost business.
"I can give it a try," said Paruka. There was still a hint of nervousness in her voice as she thought about what had been asked of her.
"Wonderful," replied Ms. Toriyama. Her smiled and her pearly white teeth could be seen clearly. "I knew that I could count on you. I'll inform the owners and put things into motion."
"If you don't mind me asking, but who will I be shadowing?"
"I'm glad you asked. I'm not all too good with pronouncing foreign names. But I believe that they are called Lucy Cabbie."
