Abstract Expressionism

If your an art lover, specially of abstract, you know what Abstract Expressionism is. Or do you? This movement in art can be controversial, thought provoking, and can knock you off your feet.

There are plenty of imitators of this movement, people who just don't get it but some of us do. Abstract Expressionism is not just throwing paint on the canvas in a haphazard fashion, it's an examination of one's psyche. It's a window into the artist's world, one that can be confusing and misshapen.

There have been tons of Abstract Expressionist artists but two that jump out are Jackson Pollock and William de Kooning. Pollock's works were a study of the world inside of him where as de Kooning's were a study of the viewer's mind. His aim was to get inside the minds of others through a single painting, to touch the world.

Two of Pollock's best works:
"Lavender Mist"

A couple of de Kooning's most famous:
"Woman V"
"Woman on a Bench"

Alright guys it seems many of you just don't get the concept of abstract art. Who made me the commissioner of abstractitude? Well, I did when I created this group.

Ask yourself these questions before you submit to our lovely group:
- do I think this is abstract art because I've splattered paint on it?
- Can someone unbiased look at this and figure out what the subject is at first glance?
- Have I taken a photo of a painting and am submitting it to the 'photos' gallery?
- Did I splatter paint to a canvas or any other paperesque thingy to make a masterpiece in under an hour?
- Is this thing that I've made conceptless?
- Did I submit this deviation because 'the colors are pretty and neat'?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these, think twice about submitting. Part of the problem connecting abstract art and the general public is the fact that a lot of stuff out there is conceptless crap. I would love to turn that around but I just can't do it on my own, obviously.
