If you know of anyone that suffers from a disease or ailment that deprives them of the ability to do even the simplest of things some days, I urge you to take the time to read this.

The Spoon Theory

The stamp is free to use of course. =)

Hey this is really great! I was wondering, would you ever consider making a stamp for spoonies themselves? I've roaved all over DA and I can't seem to find a good one but your stamps are awesome! I was just wondering. Cheers!

I'm not sure, maybe something that just says, "Spoonie" with a spoon under it, or framed in spoons.

Okay, so this is just the slightest bit old. But.

I've always loved the Spoon Theory. This stamp has (apparently... I forgot about it!) been sitting around in my Favorites for a while, so this is a bit late. But I still feel the urge to comment.

I have Arnold Chiari Malformation; a very rare neurological condition. It's hereditary, and it can cause a lot of problems. I've seen people on all ends of the spectrum; from simply having a few headaches, almost none after the surgery -- to those like me with pretty much every symptom and problem it can cause. It's hard to say, exactly, what Chiari causes because of that. 'Tis truly a complicated disorder.

When people ask me what it's like, I usually refer them to the Spoon theory. I actually knew the author of it, Christine, personally; I met her once, a very long time ago, in New York when she was there for... something. It was either a hospital visit or to see a friend, but I can't remember exactly. She was actually where I had first heard of it. In the Chiari (or 'zipperheads', as we call ourselves) community, the Spoon theory is very well known. If people are just starting off, I usually show them the 'story' of sorts, to familiarize them with it. It really is a wonderful piece of work; though, and I've always found it useful in helping people better understand it all, even if they can never truly understand it like a person with it could.

Alas, I need to thank you for making this stamp. It's a bit of advertisement along with an actual meaning to those who already know it, I suppose. <3

So yes.

Thank you,
- Pen

Thank you for taking the time to comment and tell your story. I wish the best for you in dealing with that condition (I looked it up in Wikipedia). Hopefully the stamp will prompt more people to read the story. It seems everyone who has is touched by it. =)

Thank you for this. Those questions..."how do you deal with it?", etc....it's a hard one. You don't want people to treat you like you're completely fragile, but you want them to know that you have health issues, so they can understand.
I had...have....a friend...he found out he had Leukemia, thankfully it's been in remission for years.
He came up to me, shortly after being diagnosed and said "I know how you feel now".
Here I was feeling sorry for him, and he was still feeling sorry for me. Oh what a pity-party we had.
I make a point to try and treat everyone like they are a human being.
I mean, what does it cost you to smile, and say "hello" to a person in a wheelchair?
Thanks again, man.

:manhug: My pleasure. It's a terrible thing to not acknowledge another human being. Even though none of us are perfect, I think we need to remind ourselves to be a little more empathetic too. What the world could be like then.

My nephew has PDD, a form of autism....I want people to be nice to him, and not like it's catching.
Hell...I just want people to be nicer, period.
I saw this guy, last fall, double amputee. Construction crew, yards away, had put up an obstruction, and this guy was stuck there. There was a cop, head down, not helping him, and all the guys working...NOBODY lifted a finger as he sat there...so I went and said hi, and removed the barrier for him.
He was so thankful.
Not only did I help a fellow human being, but I take great pride and satisfaction from lending a hand.
Being thoughtful is its own reward.

Well, I definitely checked out the spoon theory and I love it.

I have so many friends and family friends who are sick with illnesses you can't see so while I don't understand because I'm not sick, I definitely understand what every day takes and I thought that was a lovely blog with a great way to teach people. I also really love this stamp.

Also, I dropped off a spoon.
